You know, RIGHT when I start to think facepunch might be a little tolerant People like this just shoot that theory right down. Grow up people, let others do what they want, it isn't hurting you any.
I think T-Minus said it best threads earlier.
Well, if it was just a belief. I'm sure my fellow atheists here wouldn't have much of a problem. But if your beliefs tell you to kill a certain group of people to allow access to heaven, or halt the growth of certain fields of science (stem cells, cloning, etc) that could save or improve the lives of millions, it stops being so harmless, doesn't it? Beliefs aren't very harmless when it's telling people in Africa that condoms are ineffective against aids and pregnancy, causing countless deaths from HIV and complications during childbirth. Beliefs aren't harmless when it's telling people to fly planes into buildings and start holy wars, is it? I have no problem with people who want to believe there is a god and an afterlife, but when it starts to affect the lives and rights of those around them, things must change. Don't forget those religious who oppose genetic research and alteration of plants, which could potentially feed millions of people in third world countries AND our own, making food cheaper and more abundant. They say we shouldn't play god, but it seems we're already playing god by doing nothing. Some of the pious like to speak against science... See More, but without it, not only would our life spans not be in 80s, but the child mortality rate would be incredibly high, and death during childbirth would be commonplace. If we did not have inorganic farming methods, we would only be able to feed 2/3rds of the world's population, and I find it unlikely that 2 billion people would agree to starve. To all the other atheists out there preaching that this is the reason why atheist have no respect and don't label themselves as such. Does atheism deserve any respect, and did it even receive any in the first place? As Carl Sagan says, if we don't speak up now and allow such ideals to continue. Our society will fall back into the darkness of a dogmatic world where critical thinking and science is strongly discouraged.

and i am on the left.
Goddammit why did I laugh so hard at that.
That is.. an interesting way to put it.
More or less completely accurate too.
Goddammit why did I laugh so hard at that.
shut up pascall did you make naked pictures of garrus yet like i told you to?
shut up pascall did you make naked pictures of garrus yet like i told you to?
Not yet, I'm working on it. Be patient. :colbert: Not really.
My views: Science is above everything and should be treated with the up most respect, I wish to believe in a higher being but cannot since there is no scientific proof.
You know; I don't think religion is all that bad in some regards. I don't believe in the bible but I believe in Jesus Jesus was a nice man; he was willing to die for others and helped people; he would never harm another person even if they sinned; he was always forgiving. He's an example of how we should all live our lives. My grandmother is a catholic but never read the bible. She is a very nice person
this is a prime example of how religion is good. it teaches us good moral values. it's not supposed to literally be about a guy who did good things then came back to life, it's supposed to teach us how to act properly.
Not yet, I'm working on it. Be patient. :colbert: Not really.
jeeze what a downer if you know what i mean wait, i suddenly remembered who you were you don't know what i mean
My views: Science is above everything and should be treated with the up most respect, I wish to believe in a higher being but cannot since there is no scientific proof.
isnt that being just as blind as a christian would be dubbed as? FYI im a atheist, but your just being hypocritical.

It's not something you're supposed to look up to. The Bible has many hateful quotes in it; many ignorant. Because it is the root of all sin. I just made this thread deep; :colbert:
My views: Science is above everything and should be treated with the up most respect, I wish to believe in a higher being but cannot since there is no scientific proof.
I don't and do not wish to believe in a higher being who is sadistic, controls our lives, and lets evil run rampant to "test us".
I don't and do not wish to believe in a higher being who is sadistic, controls our lives, and lets evil run rampant to "test us".
I agree with this man.
It starts. Great.

I hate it when people look at me as a zealot who is anti-gay rights and all these terrible things, simply because I'm an on-and-off Catholic. C'mon, the Church (Pope, College of Bishops, etc.) just will not condone the religious aspect of marriage to a gay union. If anyone suggested a civil union for gays, then the Church would be happy and then go on to yell at people for thinking every Catholic Priest is a child molester. [editline]0[/editline] Oi, if you want to flame, pm me about it, don't shit up the thread.

First off, you're basically ignoring every part where it says that it's meant to be taken literally, you skip over the parts that you can't quite make into a moral story, and then you attribute morality to religion as if people can't have morals without it. However, none of that even matters, as the entire argument is a consequence of belief fallacy, meaning you're arguing that religion should be kept around, despite being oh well, LOGICALLY WRONG, on the grounds that it MAY have an larger positive impact on society then a negative one.
I hate it when people look at me as a zealot who is anti-gay rights and all these terrible things, simply because I'm an on-and-off Catholic.
because calling yourself a catholic means that you support by name the idea that condoms are worse than AIDS.
sounds like the christiant ignorant school couldnt handle the ownage
I don't and do not wish to believe in a higher being who is sadistic, controls our lives, and lets evil run rampant to "test us".
He doesn't control your life unless you accept him as your lord and savior. Believing in him and doing good works does noting unless you accept him.
sounds like the christiant ignorant school couldnt handle the ownage
Looks like the atheist ignorant couldn't keep his thoughts to himself. I'm not against all you atheists, you can believe whatever the fuck you want, just the downwright dumbass ones piss me off.
-snip-
He doesn't control your life unless you accept him as your lord and savior.
that goes against what the bible says
because calling yourself a catholic means that you support by name the idea that condoms are worse than AIDS.
Many kinds of Catholics and Christians, my grandmother (as I already said) is a Catholic yet she is okay with gay people.
