If it actually is, I sure as hell hope you aren't running regular pump gas in it.
why wouldn't I?
why wouldn't I?
Detonation.
End up with tons of pitting on your pistons and head. If you replaced the ignition system thinking something was wrong with it, that very well could have been your problem.
You may get by with 93, but I'd run cam 2.
Yup. hes right. Detonation is a very, VERY bad thing. if its really built like the guy told you it was, run the highest octane you can, if not making some higher octane gas or getting some.
is there a way to tell whether or not it actually has a full race cam in it?
without taking it apart?
Most of the time no. That's really why I rebuilt my engine. I had no idea what the hell was in it, let alone all the things that were fucked up on it. You may be able to if you pull the cam out and look for a marking, but I doubt you'll find anything.
is there a way to tell whether or not it actually has a full race cam in it?
Well, "full race" is kind of a silly term, you have duration and lift, and specs for them.
All for different applications and theories of use.
The cam doesn't matter when it comes to detonation. That entirely depends on your compression. At 10:1 - 10.5:1 you need to run 93. Above that you really need cam 2 or another special fuel.
(Also, for anyone else reading, don't assume you can just dump cam 2 in the tank, you'll burn up your valves or worse. If your engine is built, it's not really an issue.) If you're making 400+ I'm sure your compression is north of 11:1.
As for diagnosing detonation, listen for any rattling kind of sound under the hood. If you hear any, that's detonation. Usually it sounds like a loose heat shield banging around. Also before some smartass comes around telling me how they got their car to run with high compression on pump gas, well good on you. Yes, you can. If you want to fuck with your timing and your set up enough. But you're not going to be making nearly as much power.

smallish 88 Hp, but plenty of torque in 1st, and 2nd, gear.
You should get another 1.3l car. like, an older Mazda RX7.

Doesn't exist around here,
well atleast not in my pricerange :(
I was mostly being a smartass. But on a more serious note, Keep your car in good shape. If you keep it in good shape, when it comes time for a new car, you can sell your car for nearly the same as what you payed for it.

It's only rated for around 5 more years tops, mainly because rust is a big issue where i live.
Engine could use a tune-up, and there's small spots of "hidden" rust almost all over the car.
And the rear suspension system is broken.
And as a added bonus, i don't have access to either tools or a garage to fix it myself.
There is a guy that lives next door to me that likes to work on mechanical stuff. He's had a car in his garage for a while now, and I've never seen it until today. Turns out that he was restoring a Cadillac Seville.
Pic for those that don't know what it looks like (not the one near me, just a pic from Google):

Kickass, that's an interesting car. Don't think I've ever seen one.
I don't know what he's gonna do with it though, he's a fairly big guy (awesome though, he helped me out with my bike when I was younger), and he has an injury from an oil rigging accident years ago, so he has to walk with a stick. Him and his wife already own a car each, a Vauxhall Zafira and a Subaru Legacy.
Who knows, maybe I'll get it for my 17th next year :buddy:
But probably not.
On a completely different note:

That's actually really sexy.
Next time I see him working on it, I might ask what he's gonna do with it.
Are in England Mr? :)
I am. It's a rare sight seeing a Cadillac here, let alone an old one.

My parents had one, loved it and loved the gas mileage.
It's the diesel, right?
Cool story, my uncle has a diesel merc and runs a mix of cooking oil and transmission fluid in it.
It smokes like fuck, but it runs fine, kind of funny.

Someone should invent a system so you can turn off one of the engines for twice the mileage when you don't need the power

I don't think it works just like that though.

That's why someone should invent a system so it works like that :science:
They already have. Some of the new challengers have it I think. half of the cylinders deactivate when the cruise control is activated or something like that.
