I like this. Combine it with my original plan of the whole barricade/checkpoint/secured compound idea on the outter perimeter, and it would be pretty sweet. Keep in mind that this "barricade/defensive perimeter" will be little more than a bunch of barbed wire, metal debris, concrete obstacles and broken down cars, but it will be at the very least, like intended, defensive even if only slightly.
I was thinking of your idea with knocking out the stairs... I want to add on to that- how about connecting buildings modified in that fashion throughout the neighborhood via sturdy walkways between 2nd or higher floor windows? In case something were to happen to one building, whether it be structural failure due to not having the necessary people on site to do normal structural repairs, or a fire.... you could always transfer shop over to a different building, without needing to traverse the land at ground level, lower your protection level by a large degree.
Just my two cents worth, hope you like it.

That's very smart. I hadn't thought of that. But I don't know of any second story buildings in my town which I could do that too. (It's too spaced out) Even then, what if in the adjacent buildings, I can't destroy the stairs. (Like an office building stairs)
That's the only big flaw my town would have in a zombie apocalypse. Stuff is too spaced out. So unless I happened to learn of a suitable place, I wouldn't be able to use this brilliant addition to the plan.
Wait, I know a solution to the stair thing. After settling into the first shelter, find some concrete and someone who knows how to mix it. And the means to pour it to block the stairs. (Maybe have someone get a bit of lumber and prop it up. Another means: Bricklaying.
That would be kind of cool, a small suspended settlement.

that would work too, or you could also do the opposite and get a few guys with large mallets, sledge hammers, or if you are near an active construction site, a jackhammer setup if you are very lucky... and break away the stairs completely, but it would be hard to do without the jackhammer, and maybe a welding kit.
As long as they cant get through, it should be good to go.
Maybe I should create a Zombie Safehouse thread?

Why would you need an anomaly detector? It's not like two nuclear power plants near each other melted down at the exact same time.

Go to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. (Via train)

Get in and lock up.

After arrival and lock up, retrieve weapons.
After weapon retrieveal, gather food and drinkable water.*
Live in the entertainment centre for several months/years until the zombie threat is over.
If one section is taken over by zombies (the centre is split up into many various sections), then that area will be evacuated and locked up. Zombies will slowly die over a matter of days and then area will be taken over again.
Simple.
Also, train lines are used for quick access to everywhere else. Eg. shopping centres.
*Repeat when required.
Find a fortified location or a big house (a mansion?), set up a fuckton of landmines around the house, collect massive amounts of explosives and bomb the shit out of anyone who even so much as wanders on my property. Where would you get landmines?
it kinda depends on what type of zombies they are if they can run and climb and shit then i would lock myself up if not then i would just be on the move 24/7
It would be hilarious if "real zombies" actually turned out to be just mindless wanderers trying to reach for your brain. no reflexes or anything.. slow
but in some zombie films they appear to get agitated or so, starts to run in crowds etc
I live in Western Australia, and we don't have many able weapons here, although my uncle does own a .357 but that's not important.
What's important is that I'd probably make my way down south to Margaret River. Hell, Perth'd be one of the safest cities in the world, if it wasn't for that damn import/export in Fremantle next door.
But yeah, Margaret River is where I'd go. It's quiet, low population, good building materials in very large quantities and it's very protected by forest and large hills.
Acquire a boat, just like in L4D.
go to the military base nearby
I have a hunting shotgun and hunting rifle myself and what i would then do is go to somebody i know who has a boat and either convince them to join me or claim the keys for theyre boat then i would sail to this island near my town that has a 10 person population and get rid of them unless they are not infected then i could always sail off the island to small cities and such on the mainland to raid farms and lone houses
Now that I think about it, you are legally allowed to own certain types of cannons in USA without tax stamps or any special permission. So long as (afaik) they aren't rifled cannons, and aren't using conventional guidance systems. In other words, civil war, as well as certain WWI & II cannons.
They go for pretty cheap due to the simplicity in design and ease of building in a machine shop.
These things could add a whole other level of defense to any fortification or neighborhood.
Remember in Pirates of the Caribbean when the cannons were loaded with utensils?
Great area effect weapon- just shove tons of gravel, or, if you had the time to wrap them tightly and properly in a large pouch, several hundred flachettes (sp?)
yes but cannons are heavy and hard to get
it wouldnt be the first thing i looked for
My plan of action in under 20 seconds.

Steal a bus, pick up friends from their barricaded homes, drive to a particular medieval castle a mere couple hundred kilometers away, and then chill in mountaintop safety.

I think "real zombies" would be most like the infected in 28 days later. Though, they would probably still be able to speak to an extent, which would make killing them pretty disturbing.
Die horribly.
Optimal armament would be a silenced low-recoil high-bullet/magazine capacity. You would spend most of oyur time runnign away, fighting would be damn near useless, and stupidly dangerous, because you would face the risk of infection through the blood splattering on you.
The pistol makes no noise, has good ammo conservation skils, easy to conceal and carry, not many aditional cargo (aditional magazines, not to speak of the fact that, unlike double-barreled shotguns, for an example, you don't have to carry each bullet individually, making it very hard to reload and carry.)
Dressed in jeans, sneakers, long-sleeve sweater, leather jacket.
Equipped with a backpack with some canned food, some bottles of water, desinfectant, a mask, pen, paper, a radio, gloves and a second sweater.
Try to make it to a forest, low zombie density, plenty of natural resources and good hideout possibilities (treeforts).
First, build the foundation, then a little shack. Afterwards, build a safe escape route and a retractable ladder to the ground so picking up food and water is easier. After this, start building a fence near teh treefort and start a farm there, if possible, have the fence go aroudn the treehouse, so you can have food in case of a zombie siege. Make a rain-water collector for water.
For entertainment, start a library, not only will this keep me busy, it will keep my brain active, it will keep my knowledge intact, it will give me a purpose in life and it will help prolonging Mankind's knowledge.
Afterwards, dig a trench around the farm with a retractable ladder on the top of the fence. Build a quarentine shack for any survivor that wants to get in.
Keep expanding farm and make an artesian well or two.
Make some firecrackers in order to distract the zombies if running away is necessary.
Prepare myself for the worst and wait for instructions from the military.
Unlike in zombie films, in real life we would recognize zombie (subjects that behave with a zombie-like pattern).
Oh I don't know, stay at home and wait for the military to save us? Christ, the majority of you would do the same.
I bet half of you don't even know how to use a gun, let alone have any survival skills.
Get all of these with a hell lot of ammo

If I jhave time grab my clothing for portection
Grab my brothers knife and head over to the local mall to see if I can hook up with survivors
And then prob die a slow painful dead
Weapons: Almost everyone on my street owns multiple firearms and compound bows, and we've always joked about forming an emergency militia. If they all became zombies I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind if I "borrowed" their guns and ammunition.
Transportation: Some people have RVs, but I think I'd stick with a pickup truck or a small SUV.
Location: I'd probably stay where I live, or go for a supermarket or mall. (I don't think going to a major city increases the chances for survival at all)
I know this little town in Idaho in the mountains. If you don't know exactly where it is or know somebody who lives there, you just aren't going to find it. Every single person there is armed to the teeth... some with Class III stuff (all legally, of course).
We destroy the path going into the town, and we're good. There's plenty of farmland.
My house is pretty tucked away so If I just stay inside for a few days most of the initial panic and chaos will blow over. The edge of town is only a mile or so away and it is the edge of all the serious suburban developments in the county. Past there we have hills with scattered but very big and very expensive properties that would be ideal for just this scenario. No doubt the best rendezvous spot would be the firing range near the reservoir. I'd have to scout ahead to make sure the roads are clear then drive up there with anything I plan to bring.
My weapon of choice would probably be my Mini-14 initially. If they are fast zombies like in 28 days later I'd have to bust out my shotgun. If they are more like the Romero slow zombies that need headshots to kill my .22 rifle would see a lot more use. The Mini can do both and hold its own against people who would rather kill me and take my shit than have me help them deal with the zombies. This is why finding a relatively well-armed group to join early on would be a priority.
Also going to gun stores or surplus stores of big box marts in general is a bad idea at least early on. Even if they aren't overrun and absolutely crawling with undead what is to say that the people there will give you anything? I bet most gun stores would turn into forts that would shoot at anything that came near. Particularly uninfected.
