(not the engine from the Ford Pinto, the Pinto platform engine, some of which were also used in the Ford Pinto. I know, confusing, but whatever.) The only non-Ford engine you could even get in a first generation Ranger, aside from the oddball Perkins engine, is a Mitsubishi Astron diesel. And a Ranger with this engine means wideblock Mitsubishi engines will drop right in (D50 4G64, Starion 4G54, etc). Mazda didn't touch the Ranger (aside from lending a 5-speed overdrive transmission) until the second generation, when they rebadged it as a Mazda B2300/3000/4000. No Mazda engines were used in the making of the Ranger. Now the Courier, on the other hand...
