To be fair you do park it half the year. :v:
To be fair you do park it half the year. :v:
And then I use it every day for the other half of the year [editline]16th March 2014[/editline] It had been sitting for 10 years when I bought it. All I had to do to make it run was to change a rubber seal that had gone bad that was leaking oil. I haven't done anything else to the engine other than regular services
I feel like you were just extremely lucky with your Beetle though, to be fair.
Even if there were reliability issues that I've never heard anything about, it's a VW flat four. It's a one person job to drop the engine and tranny and probably a one person job to fix whatever might be wrong.
http://maine.craigslist.org/cto/4314977942.html I talked to the guy who listed this, and he'll include the tires that it needs to pass inspection if I get it. He also said it needs a new oil pump and gaskets for it to be done, as the ones in it currently are weak, but I can easily get a new one.
Worst rattle can job ever.

I'm... Special? Too be fair, the engine was on its last leg when I got it. And I put bad heads and fucked up springs when I put it all back together.
The bad: Reliability, fiberglass body, reliability.
No old VW had fiberglass body stock. And could you tell what you're on about with your mythical horrible reliability?
No old VW had fiberglass body stock. And could you tell what you're on about with your mythical horrible reliability?
Have to adjust the valves a lot. Air cooled. I doubt you could get very far when it is 110 degrees out in traffic. I'm sure it works great in the Pacific northwest, in fact, I would love to have a VW there. The weather is absolutely perfect for a car without air and very poor to no heat.

If a car's not reliable, it breaks down a lot which old VW don't do... I don't follow you Also still, what's that with the fiberglass body you were on about?
The ad mentioned the front end was fiberglass.
The ad mentioned the front end was fiberglass.
But why is that a bad thing? Fiberglass is easy to repair if you know how to, doesn't rust, is lighter than metal and does the same job as a body panel or two.

Fiberglass is easy to repair if you know how to, doesn't rust, is lighter than metal and does the same job as a body panel or two.
Yeah I'm not seeing the problem with fiberglass either so much, and here in Vancouver temperatures never reach high enough for the air cooling to become a huge problem.

I love the hell out of it. I did it because I repaired most of the car after an accident and didn't want to paint it. I'd buy it if I had the money. No doubt.

There are still many others out there.
Yeah I'm not seeing the problem with fiberglass either so much, and here in Vancouver temperatures never reach high enough for the air cooling to become a huge problem.
Its not the heat you have to worry about too often. I drove my beetle in a 112*F day wile sitting in traffic. I died almost from not enough cool air going to me, the engine did fine and the oil temp never got to a point were I should have been concerned. Its the cool. These engines will NEVER warm up without the thermostats installed in the dead of winter. Now frankly that's a BEAUTIFUL VW surely the owner would HAVE to have the thermostat and flaps installed. On the topic of why people say they break down alot if because of people NOT KNOWING WHAT THEY ARE DOING! They can miss very small details like engine cooling fins, the belt being too tight, having it improperly timed, and most of all not keeping track of the miles. These engines are GREAT when they work don't get me wrong ALOT of people have had VERY good luck with their engines and have gone tons of thousands of miles, its just alot of people do suggest a rebuild around the 100k miles range. When they do break down they are SOOO bloody easy to fix. Undo 3 bolts engine comes out. Undo 12 bolts an you can take off the heads and jugs. And working on one is made soooo much even more easier with these two tools. Tool
Thanks for all the advice from both sides though you guys. The internet seemed pretty empty about pros and cons about the type 3, my old teacher would always talk about how terribly unreliable VWs are, but as far as I know that is mostly only the newer ones with their electrical issues. The type 3 shouldn't be that mechanically different than a Beetle, and parts for those are easy to find since its such a classic. I'm not so worried about this car in the winter either, as you said, the guy probably has the thermostat and flaps installed, but the average winter weather here rarely dips below freezing, and I'm not a person who finds himself driving much. I'd prefer working on a car, tinkering, and taking it for cruises.
I would kill for a fastback. I haven't even seen one in person, most around me are the wagons, and 1 sedan that I know of. and yes the Type 3 engine is pretty much exactly like the type 1, just dual carbs and a different generator mount. [editline]17th March 2014[/editline] I wound be immensely jelly if you bought it.
