If you're just fireroading it, you'll probably never really NEED 4wd, but at the same time are you really offroading? Offroading 2wd is most certainly dangerous, and even damaging in some situations. The difference in price between 4wd and 2wd is never enough when you want an offroad capable rig. Down the road, you'll break a lot less stuff and need a lot less help with a true 4x4. Besides, with jeeps being the exception, there usually isn't a price difference.
I'd look into Broncos, K5 Blazers(these mofo's got balls. 350TBI? mhmmmm!), Exploder Sports (or 4X4 4.0 Regulars), and Blazer's too. All are pretty much as capable as a Cherokee at much lower price ranges. And all are super cheap and easy to fix considering they share powerplants and even body parts with their widely sold truck brothers.
This is mostly correct, but a couple addendums: first, if you're going off-roading, don't use 4x4 all the time. Use 2wd until you get stuck. That way you save gas and have another option if you wind up getting stuck. Second: SilentOpp is definitely right about most of those vehicles, but K5 Blazers are getting rarer and rarer as time goes on. they used to be a daily sight around here, but now most of the time when I see them they're either in garages or rusting with a plow of some sort. Same with Broncos. S10 Blazers, and Explorers are much more common, as are their pickup counterparts. Plus, you're more likely to find them in Junkyards, making parts cheap as hell if you're willing to go digging through a bunch of wrecks. I haven't seen a single Bronco, Ramcharger, or K5 Blazer in any yards recently, but plenty of S10s and Explorers.
^this but use 2wd until you come to something that your intution tells you to use 4x4.
or when you get stuck.
Also if you get a 2wd all ya need is a locker and a winch.

The offroading i did in 2wd were things like washed out dirt roads, beaver dams, a few ATV trails where i had to crawl over stumps, etc
Edit;

It's seen some shit, but it would be a worth while restoration.
I could probably get it, if i sold something first.
I also have a friend with a flatbed tow truck, and another with a garage set up for body work. So id be all set with getting it, fixing it up, etc
That is super sweet.. 80s stuff makes me so happy.

Front end seems to sit high as a bastard, possibly from the light rotary?
Front end seems to sit high as a bastard, possibly from the light rotary?
Probably. If I did get it I would definitely correct that. Looks like there's absolutely tons of space in the engine bay for anything I could possibly want to do in there.
[editline]6th September 2013[/editline]
Nah, nevermind, I can't get it. Just looked at our 110% full driveway and realized that with 4 cars for 3 people we just cannot get another car. Damn shame. Maybe if it's still there in a few months and we can get our garage cleaned out.....

And its not even the 'good' FRAM's :v
(Iirc, some people have tested and found that the higher 6x FRAM's are about as good as a good brand filter. But theyre more expensive, so youre better off just buying a good filter brand)

Things wrong with this car:
1 - A platform designed to work with the Sirius engine has something shite stuffed in it
2 - (as people have said) FRAM-ass FRAM oil filter from the back room of walmart
3 - Doesn't even use the superior 13b engine (with the better apex seals)
4 - No air filtration at all
I sort of dig it, but... really? Putting something like a 12a wankel into a car designed to LITERALLY drop a 4G63 directly in is just stupid. I'm serious -- The 4G32 that originally comes in the car is a narrowblock, you would just pull the engine out, drop in a 4G63 using some Mighty Max or D50 narrowblock G63B mounts.

Regardless, it's a sick car. They just did a lot of things wrong. I wouldn't trust anyone with building or swapping engines if they use that oil filter on the engine.
Front end seems to sit high as a bastard, possibly from the light rotary?
12a Rotary Weight = 375~ lbs
4G32 weight = 300~ lbs
>"light rotary"
Wankel engines are one of the heavier engines out there. A 13b with a turbo bolted on it weighs the same as an LS1 longblock. That's literally just how the car sits. It's monstertruck spec from the factory.

There is even an pole in there for midget strippers.
If you guys want to see what all he's done to the car you can actually check it out on the cardomain page, the engine hasn't been rebuilt as far as I can tell, just cleaned and painted. Which is unfortunate.
If it were me I would have simply built the 4G32 that was in it or put in ANY Mitsubishi engine, since most of them bolt right in to the Narrowblock transmission. A bone stock 4G32 Turbo has 105 horsepower, a great starting point for a 1.6 liter engine.
