Honestly I think education should be free through university and college. No kid's chances to succeed financially should depend on how much money their parents can pay for their education, but education in the US is not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be.
Wow shit i found an American who thinks this!
I can't believe this!
Seriosly tho, yeah it should be free and im glad it is in my country, when people say we have high taxes they don't understand we also got high salerys to compensate for that. Offcause it this system probably wouldnt work on a country as big as USA.
join the military they offer free college and if your native american you can have free college too
I may be a libertarian but there are certain things your success and happiness should never depend on, like the success of people you're dependent on by chance.

Lol so they only give you free college if you kill little children in Iraq?

Because we can only sustain this succes because we can import cheap stuff and we got alot of educated people that can do the stuff we can export.
College is pretty cheap if you do it right.
The community college I'm going to right now costs $3000 a year. I'm transferring to 4 year university after I get two years down at my CC. And that university is only $7,000 a year (just tuition) with my in-state discount.
I've got more than enough saved up to cover two years at that cost. As for housing, I'd probably have a part time job so I don't blow through all my college money on living expenses.

Dont you think that all the countries in this world are doing their best to that? To keep production deficit away?
Dont you think that all the countries in this world are doing their best to that? To keep production deficit away?
Listen, we import the stuff that people don't need an education to make. (food, etc).
And export the stuff where you need an education for it. (knowlegde, windmills, complicated crap).
American colleges and universities have many scholarship options, which can more than make up for the cost of a good education. For instance, my district offered something called the "A+" program (which was really more like a "C-" program). Anybody with grades above a C- had scholarship and tuition assistance options available to them, so long as they applied. It was entirely possible to get into Mizzou, a respectable state university, on the benefits provided by the "A+" program.
There are scholarships ranging everywhere from grades, to sports, to ethnic backgrounds, to marital and parental status. College may not be free in America, but it is readily available to most anybody who wants it enough to apply themselves, or to be born an unwed, single, Native American mother of two.

That is expensive... you can cover 2 years thats what? 14,000? without housing.... oi...
I'm in a university, Im paying 900€ a year for 4 years, then i'm going to make a post-graduation of 3 years for about 3000€ and I will have a "higher" academic status than you, but I will pay about 1/3 of what you will pay... JEBUS!
Financial aid never, EVER comes through before the start of the semester. Two years and I never was able to get it to pay out in time, I'm pretty sure they do it on purpose to milk all the late fees.

Looks good... but still it's more complicated than that.
(...) I'm pretty sure they do it on purpose to milk all the late fees.
TRUE!
Slavery through education.
Looks good... but still it's more complicated than that.
Yeah offcause it is im just trying to simplify it.
My dad was able to front his G.I. bill to me, so my college tuition is paid, and I get a living stipend.
Now that I consider it, yes, at least with my major being physics. If I were a liberal arts major I probably wouldn't give a fuck but I'm pretty much after the best schooling I can get.
I think major should factor in to school choice more.
I went to Mizzou and i hated it.
The classes were all massive (I'm all for big classes, but a class that's about 400 people is just too much).
Then, to top it off, i ended up paying out the ass for something that i didn't feel was worth it.
I switched off to the local community college to save money, and it's been a lot better.
But, considering my major is in Graphic Arts, it's not as big of a deal where i go, and who signs my degree.
My hirings will be judged more on skills.
Hey guys, i think that i have been screwed over for college.
This is getting me really worried because, my mom, she put in my financial aid for my college and she told me herself that it went through and was accepted so i thought nothing else of it.
I applied for my classes and i can't wait to start, but my mom calls me while i'm sleeping over a friends house and tells me that a mail came in the letter saying i need to pay for my classes by Tuesday. That's in 5 days, so i hurriedly checked my webadvisor on the website and it says i got no financial aid.
I'm literally freaking out right now, i am planning on calling them in a bit to ask them what happened to my financial aid. My family's mad tight on money like everyone probably and wouldn't be able to afford this.
Just thought i'd get this off my chest and relieve some of my nervousness.
TL:DR Financial aid didn't go through, might not be able to go to college since i can't pay for tuition and crap.
Are you really only limiting yourself to one path in life?
College isn't anywhere near as important as some would like to make out.
What did you want to get out of college originally?
Anyway, there's an important lesson in your situation: never rely on other people, and never just "let things fall into place". You should always work to ensure that you're getting what you want and how you want it, and taking every step to make sure it does happen.

I'm in Illinois and for some reason colleges are way more expensive here than in most states. I looked University of North Carolina once, and if you lived in state, it was something like $4000 a year.
Still more than what you pay, but still not that terrible.
And I'm getting a Computer Science degree, so getting a master's or PhD wouldn't help me at all. :v:
A lot but it will be worth it. Over the course of a lifetime the average graduate with a Bachelor's degree makes $1,000,000 more than they would have otherwise which means it will pay for itself 20 times over.
"the average..."
"which means it WILL..."
no, averages aren't guarantees. It's entirely possible that you won't be able to find a job that even uses that degree.
Come to Finland, here the government also give you over 700 bucks a month for living in addition to the free education.
Wow, 700 bucks a month is a pretty nice setup.
Hell, you could probably live without much of a job at all for that much.
Just got to a community collage for two years and transfer the money saved is great.
Except this is entirely your fault, OP. You should have checked before, I'm far more screwed. FAFSA WOULD have covered my entire tuition, but my parents are huge cheaters on their taxes, so I'm screwed, and it really sucks for me. I can't even get a job to pay for it, either. I've decided to try and make android apps to make money for school :\.
You make it seem like you're the only one in the world who wants to go to college but will have a hard time paying for it.. That's most everyone who goes to college.
"the average..."

no, averages aren't guarantees. It's entirely possible that you won't be able to find a job that even uses that degree.
I really didn't think I had to make it explicit that I know it's not a guarantee but I guess some people can't figure that out

Take out loans.
I don't know why people are so afraid of taking out loans for school. I took out a 9000 dollar personal loan last year because my FASFA screwed me in the ass bigtime, but I'm still going to be just fine when I get out of college.
It's not like you have to pay it all back in huge chunks. My mom had to pay for school almost entirely through personal loans and it really didn't affect her financially because the loan payments are so small. She completely paid off the loan when she was around 35 years old or so, almost 15 years after she went to school. The tiny amount that is taken out of your paycheck to go towards those loans isn't enough to make or break you at all.
Nobody should be afraid of loans unless they have really bad credit, which I think is pretty retarded in general. Credit cards are stupid.
You realize average means it's equally as likely that you will make more as it is that you will make less than $1,000,000 over what you would make without the degree, right?
Broke automerge
I'm not going to college because it will improve my chances of getting a job, I'm going to college because I have to if I want to get a job.
I'm going to be a teacher/coach, and I can't do that without the Social Studies Composite certification that I'm going after and a degree. Not going to school isn't an option for me.
It just sucks because I get 0 FAFSA benefits because of my parents. I'll be getting loans, if they allow me tp.
Silly Americans having to pay for college.
I live in the US and I'm getting in pretty much free...
