You know, particularly after the "everything starts going wrong" opening, this could have been a seriously bleak movie. Like, I could easily see this being reworked into a depressing deconstruction of the giant robots and monsters idea. Then the scientists walk in.
Every time the scientists had screen time I became a little sadder
screw steam sales I have kaiju
It looks as if they're engaged in some half-assed arm wrestle. Not that it's a bad thing. [editline]12th July 2013[/editline] Also, one of Ebert's replacements gave this 4/4. Then again, he did give a positive review to After Earth and a negative one for Star Trek Into Darkness. I feel worried and happy at the same time.

The movie doesn't take itself too seriously, which is good, but they didn't focus as much on Jaeger vs. Kaiju action as I thought they would. Also, there's an extremely stupid subplot (don't worry, it doesn't involve children) that shouldn't have even been in the movie.
Great Monster Movie.
My one and only complaint is the Jaegers aside from Gipsy didn't get enough screen time. [sp]I liked the goofy scientists subplot.[/sp]
Just saw this, good, fun movie that's great to watch with friends The movie industry could definitely learn from this, a big goofy over the top action movie that appeals to everyone's inner twelve year old is a real breath of fresh air with all these dark, gritty, and absolutely terrible action movies everywhere would have been better without the dumb forced romance subplot though Giant robots punching things/10 also, FUCKING [SP]BOAT BAT[/SP]
Great, great stuff. My favorite movie of the summer so far. At first I wasn't sure about the setting so late in the kaiju war and I thought Hunnam sounded too much like a narrator whenever he talked. Also they trashed Seattle offscreen? That's just rude. But the movie quickly won me over - I'd already seen most of the jaeger designs but the kaiju were so amazingly creative! The action and fight sequences were fantastic and had a great feeling of scale and scope. I liked how the characters were sort-of stereotypes (cocky jerk jock, embittered veteran who quits and returns, small but tough chick, nerdy scientist, Rocky IV Russians) but still were well-written cool folks. Day and Perlman were hilarious. The romance wasn't a bother at all. The plot and action worked well together, really kept me involved and guessing what would happen next. [editline]11th July 2013[/editline]
I still can't see how a sequel would work out, with the ending for this movie.
I'd much, much rather see a prequel [sp]or a Godzilla crossover[/sp]
Awesome movie. I love monster movies and this was a good one
[sp]so, h-how did it end?[/sp]
Also, to anyone planning to see this (everybody): There is a mid-credits bonus scene. Once the credits start rolling there's nothing else.

She literally saw him for 1 sec and fell in love.
Honestly I don't see where all this "hurr shitty forced romance" is coming from. I didn't feel like there was any romance at all. They [sp]hugged once in the entire movie[/sp] and that was the extent of it. It seemed more platonic to me, what with the whole mind meld thing.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the romance subplot in this movie, because it never really hijacks the main story. There aren't any scenes that exist just for the advancement of the romance plot. Like... At no point did I forget I was watching a movie about giant robots and giant monsters. That said, this is probably the best action movie I've seen all year. It does kind of suck that most of the action takes place at night, but I think they did a really good job making it feel like they were hitting each other with several tons of force. The only thing I might say disappointed me is [sp]nobody ever made a "jaegerbomb" pun[/sp]
That movie was fucking awesome
[sp]so, h-how did it end?[/sp]
MAJOR SPOILERS: [sp]In order to stop the portal, in which the Kaiju emerge from and when a triple event happens (three Kaiju attack), Gypsy Danger and Striker Eureka have to go to the portal and drop an atomic bomb. The father-son pilots of the Striker are broken, from a previous attack on Striker where the dad got his left arm injured. So, in replacement, Pentecost is piloting the Australian Jaeger with the aussie son. The two jaegers go into the ocean and are going to drop in the portal with the bomb. Triple event occurs, striker gets heavily damaged, along with Gypsy. A Kaiju Category 5, the largest Kaiju ever, appears against Striker. Striker heavily damages the Kaiju, and the Cat 5 Kaiju calls the other Kaiju's (the ones fighting Gyspy) to help finish Striker. Gypsy kills one Kaiju in the most badass way (not going to spoil that hehe). Two Kaiju are going to kill Striker, Pentecost and the aussie sacrifice their lives by detonating the bomb right when the Kaiju are going to maul Striker. So Striker dies, Gypsy now has to go through the portal, because Gypsy herself can detonate a bomb (or something I was confused on this part). So Raleigh and Mori go into the portal, Mori's oxygen slowly depleting, Raleigh sends her to escape pod. Raleigh then manually activates the bomb in Gypsy, while Gypsy is floating down onto the Kaiju planet. Raleigh goes into escape pod, and blasts off through the portal back to Earth, and Gypsy blows herself, and the portal. Cliche Raleigh not breathing almost dead then says a "joke" when Mori is hugging him telling him to come back. The dont kiss, but meerly hug, then helicopters fly overhead then Directed by Guillermo Del Toro end.[/sp] Phew. Anyways, the movie was fucking awesome. Loved every bit, especially the 3D. Though I absolutely hated the scientists. Also the XD screening was so goddamn loud.
God, I have to wait until the 1st of august.
Uh, guys, there was no romantic subplot. I liked it because of that. It was directly stated by Del Toro that they weren't in love. The whole point of the mind-meld is that you have to be close for it to work, and being BFFsies or in the male sense complete bros, for lack of a better word, would make it work better. To pilot with somebody you'd have to be very close, platonic or otherwise. Plus, being in a giant mech suit trying to save the world would be a pretty good thing to make you get a bit closer together and throw away other things.

[editline]12th July 2013[/editline] Dw I found it.
“I was very careful how I built the movie. One of the other things I decided was that I wanted a female lead (Babel’s Rinko Kikuchi) who has the equal force as the male leads. She’s not going to be a sex kitten, she’s not going to come out in cutoff shorts and a tank top, and it’s going to be a real earnestly drawn character…One of the decisions we made as we went along in the process of the movie was, let’s not have a love story. Let’s have a story about two people.” Director Guillermo del Toro on how Pacific Rim deviates from typical summer blockbusters, and how Mako Mori, played by Rinko Kikuchi, will be a formidable, complex character.
http://www.themarysue.com/del-toro-strong-female-pacific-rim/ Still, I thought there was some chemistry between the two but like the man said, the movie didn't turn on the brakes and randomly shove in poorly done scenes of bad romance.

Look, if stuff like Figuarts has taught me anything, it's that good action figures are really fucking expensive. The really accurate stuff is going to murder your wallet.
Where'd you get the Kaiju? Are they doing a toy line for this movie?
NECA is, they're 15 bucks each. You should be able to get them at most places that sell toys, I got mine at Toys R Us.
Just watched the movie, holy fuck it exceeded all my expectations, Aussie powa. 10/10 it was okay
Is Charlie Day bad in this or something? I love him and don't want him to be a bad point in the film

How is the 3D in this? is it gimmicky, add onto it like Avatar, or no difference from standard?
Is Charlie Day bad in this or something? I love him and don't want him to be a bad point in the film
He's hilarious. He plays a manic scientist who's a little off his rocker but still very intelligent and helpful to the cause. Also there's a great comedic subplot with him and Ron Perlman.
How is the 3D in this? is it gimmicky, add onto it like Avatar, or no difference from standard?
There were some parts that were really good and some parts that didnt add anything. Not bad 3D just nothing special.
