I liked the film. I wish there were more fight scenes with the other jaegers.
[sp]I wished some of the jaegers just lasted longer, cherno and crimson typhoon were both taken out in mere minutes[/sp]
Then what was the point of the relationship at all? There was little to no emotion between the two. If it was supposed to be a purely family or professional relationship,
It's just characterization. Like, why is it established that the Chinese pilots play basketball together? You get like one scene of them playing basketball together in the background, and one of them is carrying a basketball later. Why bother establishing that if they aren't going to have any scenes where their love of basketball becomes critical to the plot? How does their basketball-playing enhance the story?
Well, from the descriptions in here, it seems more and more unlikely that i'll ever want to watch this movie.

Well what do you want out of the film?
If your expecting a groundbreaking story with great acting and don't care for visuals, miss it or you'll just be disappointed.
If your expecting a story that serves it's purpose with some mediocre performances with a couple of stand out actors but do get to see some great visuals and giant robots beating the shit out of giant monsters then go see it and you'll probably love it.
Variety called it a "extended 3D episode of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" on very expensive acid" which I guess was meant to be an insult but IMO perfectly sums up the film and most of the super robot genre and I love it for it.

It's a cheesey concept of robot vs monster, but they pull it off amazingly. And the visuals are more amazing than Avatar, in my opinion.
Just don't go in expecting groundbreaking new directions for film and storytelling and this will likely be one of the best movies this year.

I can only suspend my disbelief for a time much shorter than the run time of most movies, so for me, visuals and action need to come from the story and characters in order to keep me staying comfortably. For example- while something like "The Avengers" didn't really have a plot that original (and actually had a few cheesy moments in it, especially towards the end), it had an amazing set of characters, all of them having different combat styles, personalities, struggles and pathways through the story. To me, the very high quality action scenes were just the icing on the character cake- The reason they never got boring was because the difference between the characters made them diverse by default. If you would have replaced the avengers with a bunch of shield agents fighting the Chitauri in big robot suits it just wouldn't have made the cut for me, no matter how good the action was.
Like I said before, I just can't suspend my disbelief for that long. You want me to see a movie that's just dumb, pure fun? OK, I'm down for it-For the first 30 minutes. After that I just automatically turn into "that guy" and start to analyze the plot from every direction I can, constantly thinking how all of it could be solved in 5 minutes if everyone just didn't cling to their idiot ball so hard. I just know it's gonna happen. The movie would be midway through monster-punching action, and I'd start wondering why they don't just use a GBU-57 instead of using giant expensive robots that can clearly deliver less energy, because there's nothing else to keep my head busy.
I have too much experience with these kinds of movies. I'll just spare myself of the "meh" feeling and not go.
Awesome popcorn move. And the tickets were free so I have no reason to complain.
I'm just a sucker for the kaiju genre.
I loved the part where [sp]Gypsy halved a kaiju vertically[/sp]
I saw this yesterday, was absolutely blown away. I haven't felt so fucking pumped up watching an action film in ages.

this whole film was a massive dose of "humanity, fuck yeah". sure, it wasn't exactly smart, but the bits outside the action scenes were much more enjoyable than I was expecting, especially the subplot with the two scientists
I liked how each Jaeger had its own theme music. Like the scene where[sp]the Chinese Jaeger is fighting a Kaiju and the music has traditional Chinese motifs, then when the Russian Jaeger steps in the music seamlessly transitions to a deep Russian-sounding choir.[/sp]
What bothered me about [sp]Crimson Typhoon's death was how he was practically undamaged, he just had his head torn off immediately. At least Cherno had the excuse of taking a massive amount of acid to the face. Hell, find it a new head and you've got a perfectly good Jaeger sitting right there.[/sp]

[sp]It looked like one of the pilots got impaled by a talon when the head was ripped off.
And then I guess they didn't have enough time to retrieve and repair it.[/sp]
Went and saw this today, but
[sp]to me it was kind of annoying that the Jaegers seemed to switch between being made out of paper and being completely indestructible. Cherno and the chinese Jaeger were hyped up as being tough as fuck and never having lost a battle, but they they got ruined in minutes.[/sp]
[sp]But in comparison, Gipsy got absolutely trashed in the first part by a somewhat weak Kaiju (compared to the later ones) but then seemed nigh indestructible throughout the battle for Hong Kong.[/sp]
I still think "Gipsy Danger" is a fucking stupid name for a mecha, though. The others all had somewhat cool names, at least.
Aside from that and a few other things, i really liked it.
That [sp]hong Kong battle was practically 'America fuck yeah' when you know the russian and chinese are gonna die. I know they never show it but its implied. CAN THE JUST STOP MAKING THE FUCKING CHINESE AND RUSSIANS ALWAYS DIE FIRST FOR GOD SAKE[/sp]
So my two favorite Kaiju are Knifehead and [sp]Otachi[/sp].
But damn, if they ever do a sequel, they should bring in Godzilla somehow.

Did this one get cut or did I miss it?
[editline]14th July 2013[/editline]
and 8/10
Was one hell of a rimjob
Out grossed by both Grown Ups 2 and Despicable Me 2 on opening day
I can understand the later, but... Grown Ups 2... Why...?

My guess? It's not a movie for children, it's not a sequel, and America is stupid(because it likes Grown ups)

Stacker is in it during Mako's flashback.
[editline]13th July 2013[/editline]
I'd like to mention that everyone had crazy-awesome names in this movie:
- Raleigh Becket
- Stacker Pentecost
- Dr. Newton Geiszler
- Hannibal Chau
- Ops Tendo Choi
- Herc Hansen
dont forget GIPSY DANGER
Did they go pick a random adjective and noun for the Jaegers? Felt like it but it worked out somehow.
Soft Box
Loud Frame
Matte Ape
Hey those are the next Jaegers
Hannibal Chau looked like he walked off the set of Fifth Element.
Hannibal Chau looked like he walked off the set of Fifth Element.
Same with the Russian pilots.
The theme song makes me want to kick ass and wish there was a video game that acted as a prequel. [sp]It would guarantee at least... what, 22 kaiju fights? I mean, eventually they'd all end up poorly for the Jaegers, but we can leave that part out...[/sp]
Same with the Russian pilots.
I thought they looked like they walked off the set of Rocky IV
just got out of seeing this
holy shit
just
holy shit
i love monster movies and i loved cloverfield back when it was released, but THIS just stomped cloverfield into the goddamned dust, i hope they make a sequel or something, i would give all my money for that. that CGI was mind blowing too, i even personally believe it blew avatar out of the water
hell, watching it made me wish there were more video games out there too for such a genre, maybe even make a game for PR (although going by past experience, most movie games are pieces of shit but who knows). the only ones that come to my mind are the godzilla fighting games for xbox/PS2, but those havent seen a new addition in ages (the wii game isnt worth mentioning)
Seriously this might be the first movie I see multiple times in the theater
Seriously this might be the first movie I see multiple times in the theater
i plan on going to an imax next week! i saw it at a shitty local theater first (it was pretty terrible, the screen was so damn small and the quality wasnt as great as it could have been, the subtitles, whenever they appeared, were halfway off the screen...)
Just saw it and what really bugged me was that they waited until the last possible moment to use use the Jensen-style elbow sword. Whenever they whip it out, it's clearly the greatest weapon in the Jaegar's arsenal, they kill the flying one instantly, it cuts one clean in two in the last battle. Why hold off using it?
Also, the first few fights seemed like it really took everything out of the good guys. By the end, it sort of seemed like the Kaiju weren't taking nearly as much effort to fight. Maybe it's just cause the Jaegar's who weren't plot-important got killed so easily. That was also a little disappointing.
Apart from the gripes, I still thought it was amazing.

Also, it's like watching a live action anime. I mean that in good ways and bad ways.

Blood's acidic remember. It would turn the cities into wastelands which why Strike Eurekas were heated so that they cauterized the wounds before any major damage is done.
They didn't even use it when they were fighting in the ocean the first few times though.
