Has anyone seen media coverage for this yet? Mainly the big guys, CNN, NBC, FOX?
Only if the leaking leads to the death of more, otherwise what's done is done.
I would prefer to know what's actually going on in the conflict rather than some spoofed up news. I don't want to hear what the military wants us to hear, I want raw facts. Sure strategically it would be very wise for the military to keep this kind of stuff classified, however it's not the moral way of doing things.
how are civilan casualties relevant to the leaked documents? isn't it about the war effort itself?
besides, if the people were to know, what could they do? whether they know or they don't it's not like they can do anything about it. what is it that makes it better for the people to know? you could say it's for a greater good for the people to know the truth or whatever, but really. it's not like we could do anything about it. you'd say to yourself "oh okay, I feel better to know now" but the next month you'd probably forget about the whole thing
in a democracy it's supposed to be the people who make the decisions, and the better they're informed, the better decisions they can make
If the leak endangers US forces in any way, it's wrong.
Edit: Should have said "NATO" instead of just US. Also, curious who thought this sentiment dumb, and why. Do tell.
All censorship is wrong. End of story.
So its ok to rape and kill and girl and post a video of it on the internet? It can't be touched?
Your logic is flawed.
Is wikileaks down for everybody?
Is wikileaks down for everybody?
For me.
If they do a bad job on making these documents unobtainable then it deserves to be leaked.
if I were a president, I wouldn't want people to know about how my troops failed to teach the afghan police on how to deal with tense situation
that's because you'd want to cover it up
Let me put it this way:
it would be wrong not to.
Zekeeee you're baaaack :v:
I think it's wrong for the government to keep secrets from the people. The people have (or should have) much more power than the government.
What if wikileaks leak out information on how to make a nuclear weapon out of backyard shit?
Nah, that won't happen not even for a zillion years
If the leak endangers US forces in any way, it's wrong.
I am not even American, but I agree with this. Any breach of information that could cause danger on your own troops is wrong.
We deserve to know what our soldiers are up to.
I like reading stuff like that. :buddy:
The action - yes, the way they eerily get close to commentary when they describe their release - odd.
I think of it wrong leaking and not censoring sensitive stuff.
Here's a thing though: Censorship causes blindness, in some cases.
Oh my god you're such a tool.
Government should be transparent. Sure there needs to be some PR over sensitive issues, but we've fallen so far into big government and the delusion of the american dream that we need something like this to wake us the fuck up.
Not if it potentially compromises national security
either way it doesn't really matter if its right or wrong, it's out
All laws of man be damned, the truth must always be free.
You're brilliant. Let's give out the USA nuclear launch codes and put them in the public domain. Nothing can go wrong and the world would be perfect without the government even keeping 1 secret right?
Ah, I remember when you were just a small site with some documents from China and mostly public domain and FOIA stuff. My how you've grown, Wikileaks! You make me proud.

Well, I saw footage of a US Military AC130 mission. It is alleged that they killed civilians from it. They were also talking a lot like the characters from the Modern Warfare Series. Link: http://kotaku.com/5510188/us-army-accused-of-video-game+like-behavior-in-disturbing-leaked-iraq-war-video The video footage is 39:00 minutes long, and it's in the comments.
Transparency in government is good for standard run of the mill days, however, in extraordinary times occasionally the people of America shouldn't know what their leaders are doing. Large changes can only happen when representatives aren't worried about getting re-elected and don't have to worry about the public finding out what their stance on a decision was.
ie the drafting of the 2nd constitution and the new deal etc

this is one of those times where it's fine to release info
To be honest, yeah this is terrible, but each time wikileaks posts new videos and information all he does is making his own country and its troops look horrible. That's bad for PR, both troop moral and citizen moral. And really, if you thought that in a war you only shoot the enemy and have this super human instinct to define between a gunman and a civilian, you are delusional, especially in places such as Afghanistan.
War has always been terrible, and quite frankly I won't be surprised or shocked to find out even if they were shooting a bunch of children. War makes you insane, war makes you dump almost all of your morals down the toilet. It makes any man a trigger happy madman. Some people do that to avoid the terrible reality of war, that you can get a bullet through your skull any second by an enemy sniper, or how you can't sleep at night fearing you'll get a mortar shell right through your tent.
Why aren't people listening to this.
^^
also i don't think leaking is bad, but at its present times it is, and like this guy said it hurts soldiers moral and such. Try to place your feet in the soldiers shoes when something immoral happens it might be easy for you to say on the internet hurr i wouldn't do that but you don't know the circumstances

I posted a link to a report by CNN in the OP.

I agree with this. Politicians are focused on getting reelected. The problem is that with media coverage being so widespread, congressmen are choked between making a political decision and one that he feels is right for the country.

No, it's not wrong. The public should be informed of what their military and government are doing.
The Freedom of Information Act says that unless their release to the public eye poses a imminent national security threat, it is perfectly acceptable. It seems like they don't pose a serious threat to the security of the United States, so it's just fine in my mind.
That's all? When I heard about the leak on the news they never said what the documents where about, so I've been all :tinfoil: today expecting russia to have sent nukes everywhere because they knew all the secrets.
