It would not be ok if we cut off cow's legs and then just threw it away.
I think there's nothing wrong with it, Its their culture that they eat shark fin, Its our culture we eat cows, But we don't stop because Indians tell us to.
Repeating myself:
Nothing wrong with cutting their fins off while they're alive and then throwing them back into the sea alive so they can drown rather than quickly killing them? Also I think it's wrong of them to kill so many sharks that the population of them is thinning out.

Nothing wrong with cutting their fins off while they're alive and then throwing them back into the sea alive so they can drown rather than quickly killing them?

Except cows aren't endangered, and we use the whole cow.
Yep, there's less than one percent waste product of a slaughtered cow. Even the bones, hooves and horns gets used.
I could see this as okay if the sharks were found dead or something, but that wouldn't be very likely...
We eat all cow and not let it go to waste. It would not be ok if we cut off cow's legs and then just threw it away.
Cut the cows legs tail and ears off then tossed it aside to bleed to death. If we did this practice to any other animal there would be international outrage. I sick and tired of this whole "animal cruelty does not apply to fish because they're stupid." bullshit. Dare I say we do the same to these fishermen that they do to poachers in Africa. Part of the problem is how irrationally afraid people are of sharks. There is absolutely no reason to fear sharks. None at all. Given the number of people that go to beaches (also known as the number of people that have been within a mile of a shark without knowing) and the number of attacks each year, sharks are actually statistically nonthreatening to humans compared to shit like rip currents, jellyfish, bacteria, broken glass, etc etc. Jaws has the blood of mass extinction on its hands.
Same with frogs' legs. They pull the legs off (literally RIP them off) then chuck the frogs back.

Shark fin is considered a delicacy, and quite honestly it's delicious.
The fin itself does not have taste, as cartilage has no taste, just texture. Also, in my culture, we eat pork ears. We also eat the rest of the pig, and by the rest, I mean the REST. We don't go and chop the ears off a pig if we want pig ear. Shark MEAT is also quite tasty (or at least mako/porbeagle), and a 200 kg animal gives a lot of food. No need to be wasteful and just cut off the least nutritive parts of a life animal. As for mercury, yeah, large sea animals have high concentrations of it. Then again, normal quantities of mercury for the species is not going to kill a human at the long term, as long as the consumption is sporadic: Having swordfish/marlin/tuna/shark once a month or so is going to be more beneficial than hindering; their fatty acids have less tendency to clotter your arteries... The solution is, of course, crocodile meat.
Why not kill them first?I mean removing the fins and then letting them die on the bottom of the ocean is just sick.
Why not kill them first?I mean removing the fins and then letting them die on the bottom of the ocean is just sick.
Time is money. People see sharks as vicious man eating animals because of Jaws so people don't see them as cute cuddly animals so they just treat them like shit. [editline]22nd October 2011[/editline] Also, a Taiwan Tilapia farmer found a way to make his fish into shark fin substitute. Not only can you sell the Tilapia meat, but you can cut off their fins and make them into the same thing as shark fins. Not only that, but Tilapia are one of the easiest commercial fish to farm. (someone in the US is doing it in an abandoned swimming pool) http://www.taiwantoday.tw/ct.asp?xItem=177892&CtNode=429

I also think there should be a limit as to how many sharks can be hunted per year or something so that humans don't end up wiping them out faster than they can reproduce. It would be great to use this Tilapia substitute instead but you will get some pretentious fucks who only want the real thing. At least this could perhaps reduce some of the demand for actual shark fin soup.
It is foolish to eat shark fin as it is a great waste of resources so that the bourgeoisie can present themselves as important.
I would have no problem for the shark hunt, if it was done in moderation and if they actually used the whole shark. It is the problem that they are wasteful, and over fish that causes all the problems.

The solution is insects for the most efficient protein.
Alright this makes me mad. This is blocked in my country based on copyright grounds, but it says Channel 4. Now in the UK there is a Channel 4. Is this referring to some other countries channel 4, or is YouTube merking me over? I can't even copy the videos URL and watch direct, it's fucking annoying.
It is foolish to eat shark fin as it is a great waste of resources so that the bourgeoisie can present themselves as important.
Seriously. What do they do anyways? The only people who see them eat it are the people they go to the restaurant with and others in the restaurant. And what do they do after? Flaunt it around to their friends? "Hey I just had shark fin soup. What did you have? :smug:" Or is it for some sort of self-satisfaction that they are carrying on tradition by eating this soup? Either way, it's pretty stupid. No species should suffer for any human 'culture.' Having a nice car. Now that's a symbol of wealth.
I'll be honest... I've tried shark meat before. The taste is fantastic. They need too farm raise sharks and other aquatic species, and just keep it like that. Sure it would cost a little more, but at least it would allow the eco-systems to regrow.
I'll be honest... I've tried shark meat before.
That's a whole different story.
Indeed, but I would prefer farm raised regardless. Sharks play a vital role in the eco-system and if we continue to kill them we'll just drive more of the species extinct.

Sharks are on that list. Eat more Tilapia and Catfish while we let the oceans catch up.
In the youtube comments of that video somebody also claims that a chain supermarket called Cold Storage in Singapore stopped selling Shark Fins.
I wasn't even aware that they were even selling shark fins in the first place. If anything, it would be the medicinal shops here.
Farm raised fish.
Oh, i see.
i tried shark fin soup before, not as expensive as 90 GBP maybe 12-15GBP. Since the actual shark fin doesn't taste anything, I think a substitute for it would be a great idea.
I don't think China could give a damn about this, they're a rapidly growing economy. I would be scared shitless if I ever saw a shark while swimming, but it's just doing it's thing. Bears look all cuddly and dandy, but you're more likely to die of a bear attack than a shark attack. This is just sick.

Gordon Ramsay claimed in the video that you could add something like chicken to the soup and it would make it's flavor even better than a soup with a shark fin in it.
