Not to mention they are an Apex Predator and keep the entire reef ecosystem (the most biodiverse ecosystem on the planet, rivaling the rainforests) in check. An ecosystem that serves as the back bone for many commercially important fish. We lose sharks, we lose reefs, we lose fisheries, we lose economic stability.

We will lose Billions, if not Trillions globally if we allow sharks to fade away.
So yeah, They're pretty fucking important. More important than some wasteful cultural gluttony.

They also hunt jellyfish, so if sharks are gone, people are very likely to die/get injured while out in the ocean by jellyfish.

they're intelligent living creatures being horribly killed... you are an asshole.
Given the statistics (coupled with it's danger of extinction), and the inhumanity of it, I'd also say it should be banned, but the "wastefulness" argument seems silly to me. From an objective standpoint, why does it matter if you eat/use part of something or the whole of it? If there WAS a use for the whole shark, then it's ridiculous that they don't use it, but the fact that they throw it back suggests to me that there is no use for the rest. I'm just saying that it seems like you guys are putting some imagined value on the concept of using the whole shark.

However when you have limited space on a boat, you can make more money my stuffing it full of fins which go for hundreds of dollars. Or stuffing it full of shark bodies that won't get you nearly as much.
Shark Fin Soup was always a food of nobility and class in China, so now as there is a growing middle class, people eat shark fin soup to present themselves as classy/rich/noble.
The shark fin has NO flavor in itself, nor nutritional value. The flavor is in the broth, which is then absorbed by the fin. Might as well save a shark and just eat the broth.
It's not full of nutrition, but it is full of mercury.
