This is impossible on my 1000d.
agree
I'm out.
Might be impossible on my 550D. Not sure. I don't know if I have time either. We'll see
Do all of you wanted it changed to something a little slower? I mean it is a photography challenge...
Wouldn't a wide enough aperture be some help, and surely you guys have torches and stuff. Cities aren't pitch black.
Get rid of the the 'night life' thing, just leave it at 1/1000. [editline]23rd May 2011[/editline]
Wouldn't a wide enough aperture be some help, and surely you guys have torches and stuff. Cities aren't pitch black.
At f/1.4, ISO 6400 I can get barely usable exposure at 1/60 near a street light. 1/1000 is out of the question in anything but sunlight, really.
But who said it had to be taken at night? Fine, I'll just leave it at 1/1000 I don't think it will be as interesting this way, but have what you want. It's just a twist this week, no theme.

That doesn't mean you have to take it at night. It means the picture has to be saying something about the night. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] But it's fine, you don't have to take it about the night anymore.
Yeah it's possible, but you're pushing it. I know it's supposed to be about 'thinking outside the box', but this is one of the many reasons I don't enter these contests - uninspiring themes. "The theme is about the night, but the catch is you have to use a setting that makes it near impossible to even take a picture at night", it just doesn't work man. Sure you'll get one creative bastard that has a clever work around, but its just unrealistic to expect that out of everyone. That sounded like only a twist to me. I always felt like really open ended stuff with only the technical aspect accounted for made pretty bland contests. We can try it like it this week where all you are limited to is 1/1000. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] If you guys want to really vote on each topic before the next week I'd be very happy because it's hard to come up with topics that everyone likes.
I'm agreeing with bopie. While its great to have a certain theme to promote thinking outside ones usual box these ideas need to be fairly creative while at the same time not acting as a constraint. Some ideas may benefit from an added twist or criteria but it needs to be reasonable. Things like 1/1000 shutter speed but at night! or 30s in the sun won't really work for everyone. So the weekly themes need to be pliable enough to allow more people to attempt whatever the theme may be while at the same time remaining interesting. Just a few quick ideas. • Long Exposure (either leave it at that or place a requirement like at least(but not limited to) x sec) • Panoramic • Action Shot • Nature (a lot of options here from trees and wild life to that dead thing in the corner.) • Water (about water or reflections on water) • Short Exposure (not just a fast shutter speed but the pic needs to emphasize some quick event) • Bokeh • Distance (object has to be at least or within a certain distance.) • Distance 2 (about large expanses and what not.) • Black and White • Come up with so more this is just what I can come up with at the moment. Also mentioned: • Double Exposure (never have done this but sounds neat) • Levitation (and it doesn't just have to be a person or object) • Upside down • Shadows • I must like bullets...
Twist should be optional, so that people with not so great cameras can participate.
Twist should be optional, so that people with not so great cameras can participate.
then... how is it a challenge?
then... how is it a challenge?
Just like any challenge? It's inviting someone to try something they may not usually do. Why should the challenge be based on your skill level/capabilities?
I'll let you guys come up with the ideas now that you're all into it. I had a feeling my ideas weren't good.
i love how you ripped the idea right from gizmodo
I don't even visit gizmodo, I had no idea they used it.
I don't even visit gizmodo, I had no idea they used it.
It was last weeks or a week before I think, but it is a good topic because it really allows you to get creative.
Are you talking about the 1/1000 idea that everyone was suggesting? cueball, you were one of the people who wanted that, you said "change to 1/1000"
Are you talking about the 1/1000 idea that everyone was suggesting? cueball, you were one of the people who wanted that, you said "change to 1/1000"
where?
change it to 1/1000
???
i was talking about changing your EXIF to match 1/1000, as bopie was talking about dates
i love how you ripped the idea right from gizmodo
I love how you don't realise bigboy and bopie suggested it.
Besides Gizmodo is shit now with the new layout. Not to mention the quality of the writing has been going downhill for quite some time now.
They had a hill?
you cannot capture anything at 1/1000 without sunlight [editline]23rd May 2011[/editline] flash sync hits at 1/200
Nikon CLS auto FP high speed sync? HSS for canon people?
highest flash sync I've seen is 1/500 on a 1D, I'm not sure though
I had a really good idea for a weekly challenge but I forgot what it was now
