I think thats because the graphics are too underpowered for these consoles so they can't run splitscreen well.
Some games downgrade their graphics in split screen; Forza Motorsport tones down its bloom, reflections, and lighting quality when in split screen, and does various tricks to reduce the poly count, such as shoving the first-person cockpit camera foward so only the tip of the steering wheel (and virtually none of the instruments) are visible.

I love playing splitscreen on my bros pc. lfd/lfd2 mostly haha. way better than console
Yes, I used to play split screen 360 on my PC monitor. That's just me though, but it seemed to work fine.
four keyboards, mouses and audio plugs anyone?
Or just plug a USB controller in because many games have support for gamepads. And most computers not built in the stone age have multiple easily accessible usb ports
Even thought most of my gameplay goes to Garry's Mod on the PC, I defend the console. A big part of my argument goes to splitscreen. The thing with splitscreen and PC games is that, many PC games struggle just to use the limited resources PCs have compared to consoles. Imagine what it would be like if the computer had to SPLIT its resources to rendering to two different areas of the screen-graphics would have to take a major toll. Of course if you have a computer that is powerful enough (like, a customized Mac Pro or some Alienware thing) split screen, I think, would be a valuable addition to PC gaming. However, the simple fact of the matter is that most average computers can barely play the latest and greatest games, even when released in the same year; splitscreen would not be practical.

PCs in no way have limited resources, not when compared to consoles. Rendering 2 different views would not be that much more resource intensive. You definitely do not need a mac pro nor and alienware to run the latest games, I'm not sure where you're pulling your "Average computer" from, but barely being able to play recently released games is a load of shit. [editline]15th August 2012[/editline] Splitscreen is entirely doable, and it would be nice to be able to play games with friends sitting right next to you, rather than over the internet.

before we each got our own computers i used to play l4d split screen with my brother on the pc. he'd use the ps3 controller while i'd use kb + mouse. i'm fairly certain that it would attract people to pc because simply put i really only use my xbox for playing co-op and stuff.
I played Left 4 Dead and Portal 2 using split screen with my brother. It was great.
