Ask if he miscounted, and then continue your wonderful story.
Obligatory:
You should get to know the guy, just go back and ask if he made a mistake, if so you will feel better if not take him out to lunch.
I make that a paycheck and it all goes to bills and gas
He probably appreciated the work and the company
I have a similar story. This old guy that knows my mother from church asked if I was in college, after being told I am he asks if I still have any free time. He gets a hold of me and asks if I want to go to his house to do some yard work. He says he will pay me $10 and hour. So I go over, get handed a pair of gloves, some hedge clippers and am told to tear down this small fallen tree. After I dismantle it and put if all in trash bags, he asks if I know anything about computers. About an hour or so later I get his record player hooked up to his Win XP computer (:v:) and teach him how to use it. We sit around and listen to a Johnny Cash record to make sure it works. He hands me $60 as I leave. I was there for 5 hours but he told me to keep the rest. He tells me to come by next week. So I do, and am told to literally just spray water on some windows and squeegee them off. I do and it takes me about an hour. He says "let's get lunch". Im assuming Taco Bell or something, but instead we go to the local diner. He pays for lunch and we spend it discussing his tours in WWII. We go back to his house and I had to fix the record player recorder (He mispressed a button) I told him I like old music, and offers to make a copy of his music for me. We then spend the next hour listening to old records. So I spent an hour spraying windows, and got a free lunch and got to relax listening to 1940's music and get paid for it. Not quite as profitable as your trip OP, but similar. Old people can be pretty cool.
I've been making £20 every two weeks by mowing my Grandmother's Lawn. Shit is cash :v:
He gave you the money for a reason.
get a new pc monitor
You should come say hi to him some time, be friends with him. He probably gave you that money 'cause he hasn't had company like that for a while, and you probably made him happier than he has ever been in his old age.

The guy I worked for's wife was out of state. It was just him in the house. When I said I should probably get going he insisted I wait until the current record was over. Even though we weren't doing anything but staring at the wall and listening.
I think he give it not for the work, but for the fact he was a nice person and listened to his story. I suspect he's quite alone since the 70's.
I would go back to his house Bag in hand and ask him if he miscounted. Who knows, maybe he'll invite you in for some tea and give you another $540 to make it an even grand.
I'd say you should invest it in gold. That way its pretty much guaranteed to increase in value.
It'd be better to speculate in Greece falling and invest in Poland. [editline]8th October 2011[/editline] Anyway, I worked cleaning old peoples homes this summer, old people stories are awesome.
So, you ever talk to the guy again about this?
Go back and tell him about it. Maybe it was a test. If you come back, he'll give you even more money!
He obviously was a drug dealer in his prime days, and gave you some of whats left.
So, you ever talk to the guy again about this?
I stopped by his place today but he wasn't home
Maybe it's counterfeit and he was looking for a convenient way to get rid of it.
Highly unlikely. If it was any sort of large-scale proper gang-based counterfeiting job, they'd launder it by leasing dribs and drabs into locations such as clubs, pubs, corner shops, anywhere where it'd be nigh-impossible to trace what bills have been handed out where. Now gift me HL:S :V
Buy the old man a hooker
I personally would give the money back. Only take out $80, the amount for the hours you worked. Give the rest back. If he insists you take it, attempt to give it back once more, if he still insists, then just take it because obviously he doesn't need it or want it. Anyway, you're not weird for liking to hear stories. I wish I still had a grandfather living so I could hear stories.
Use the money to buy the old man a gift, get to know him better, and through some sort of arrangement you can marry him. After marrying him, OP, you should put a large life insurance policy on him. Surely, if he can give you nearly $500.00 for helping him move stuff, he has a much larger stash (or is a frequent bank robber) This combined, after marrying him, his death will result in a HUGE profit! You can use this money to repeat the process on other innocent, kind, old men! It's the only way, OP - you know your destiny.
take photos of yourself wearing sunglasses with flipping through the money with some of it stuffed in your shirt and post on facepunch/book for all to see [editline]8th October 2011[/editline] for ALL to see [editline]8th October 2011[/editline] seriously though your work meant a lot more to him than just getting rid of some shit, good on ya mate.
That's what you get for being nice.
and you probably earned a lot more from it than the money.
He was a jewler. He probably has a lot of money.
Go back, ask if he really meant to give you that much. He'll get so impressed with your kindness and honesty that he'll give you even more!
