So there's going to be a film based on Gulliver's Travels.
:buddy:
Starring Jack Black as Lemuel Gulliver.
:raise:
It's a family-friendly comedy movie in a modern setting.
:frown:
About Lilliput only.
:gonk:
Gulliver is no longer an intelligent doctor, linguist, and navigator
:ohdear:
He's a fuckup slacker mailroom worker who gets lost in the Bermuda Triangle.
:eng99:
And it's in 3D.
:smithicide:
Anyway, here's the trailer... If you really want to see for yourself

I don't know if I'm being too hard on it... Gulliver's Travels is just possibly my favorite book, and what I always liked about it is that it looks like a light-hearted adventure story to the casual observer, but still has sophistication and social commentary under the surface. But this movie looks like it's going to be all of column A and none of column B.
Basically, it looks like it'll have about as much in common with the story of Gulliver's Travels as the game Dante's Inferno has with the Divine Comedy. I've always been pretty neutral toward Jack Black. He's not HILARIOUS, but I don't hate him as much as I know a lot of people do... But he's NOT the kind of person I want to see in Gulliver's Travels.
What troubles me even further is the IMDB page. Particularly some of the characters listed for this movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1320261/
-Princess, king, and queen of Lilliputia? Either this movie is made by people who have never read the book, or the IMDB page was edited by people who have never read the book. I REALLY hope it's the latter.
-Listed above the princess and captain from Blefuscu is "Hot dog eating dancing Lilliputian." I'm sure that this character will contribute heavily to a parody of 18th-century British politics.
-Justin Brett is credited as Paul Stanley of Kiss. There are no words for how retarded that is. Not only is it retarded that Paul Stanley has any mention in an adaptation of Gulliver's Travels, but they couldn't get Paul Stanley himself. He'll do Glee, Beavis & Butthead, and What's New Scooby-Doo but he won't touch this shitty movie.
I really wish someone would make a proper, decent-budgeted movie adaptation of Gulliver's Travels, but I get the feeling that this movie is actually going to harm the reputation of that story as a whole. It could be portrayed as an epic, spanning 3-4 films, but nooooo. We get "hot dog eating dancing Lilliputians" instead. And I'll bet my life savings that the inhabitants of this isolated island who have never before encountered a human will conveniently speak perfect American-accented English. Well, except the royalty. I bet they have inexplicable English accents.

Pretty much every Jack Black film
God damnit, there's already a film that's actually decent.
Wasn't the Bermuda triangle thing explained like, years ago?
Methane gas bubbles.
I hate that people still don't know this.
I think it is a movie that is supposed to be in the spirit of the book.
There have been plenty of adaptations of the book, but face it the book is unfilmable. To make a movie in which the protagonist is an angry misanthrope won't sell tickets; so we'll have to settle on the next best thing.
Hud, starring in another shitty movie (The other being Yogi Bear.) What a great way to hit it big in Hollywood...

I'm assuming that's a requirement for every film now.

movie
Jack Black was only good in Be Kind Rewind
Jack Black was only good in Be Kind Rewind
and in High Fidelity, though his roll wasn't too big in that movie.
Jack Black was only good in Be Kind Rewind
Tenacious D
orange county he was funny in.
Good luck outdoing the '96 miniseries.
Jack Black was only good in Be Kind Rewind
School of Rock
I guess this is now the "decide whether Jack Black is generally good or bad" thread.
I don't really feel strongly about anything he's been in. Every Jack Black movie I see is just "meh." Except I've never been a fan of all the Tenacious D shit. It's just kind of gimmicky and boring.
This is probably going to be the first Jack Black movie that I utterly hate.

King Kong.
This is going to end up with anyone who mentions the book will rage when people ask them if thats the movie about the fat guy that gets lost in the Bermuda Triangle and is really stupid?

:suicide:
At first I was excited to see Jack Black play a total dick who goes on a magical adventure.
Now, I'm completely disappointed to see film makers being total dicks who go on money-fueled adventures.
love how obviously photoshopped the poster is.
Yeah, it looks like his face is made of plastic and he has no lips
Jack Black has actually had a lot of great movies.
Why the hate
Tenacious D
one of my favorite stoner movies ever.
Yeah, it looks like his face is made of plastic and he has no lips
Actually upon further inspection he is not actually photoshopped, in high resolution photos you can see better detail, the lighting is however very bright and does not look too good, or natural.
King Kong.
I totally forgot to mention that one because he really wasn't playing his usual moron/stoner/rocker character. He was quite good.
It will be awesome.

I can feel it.

I know it's been said already but I'd like to emphasize School of Rock.
Damnit. Why do they have to ruin one of the best books of all time?
Jonathan Swift is rolling in his grave.
i thought jack black was okay in that episode of seinfeld and mars attacks
Chris O'Dowd is in it
Why, God, why?
