How Do I get Started! Well, it's actually fairly simple, but there are some things you should probably have before getting started. What to Have -Athletic Gloves -Light, but well-treaded running shoes. OR you can get flashy Parkour shoes. -Light clothing -Hairpins (If you have long hair) Keep in mind, take off, or hide your watch before you ever think of going out, I have injured myself loads of times looking at my watch mid-jump. Training Before you hit the pavement, you should probably hit the gym first. You need good muscle strength both with upper and lower body. Basically, my guidelines for being ready is: -30 Push-Ups, or being able to rep your weight (Though only once). -Level 12 Beep Test score, though 14 is recommended. -Ability to climb a rope.
OP gives bad avice.. sorry. Never learn in the gym before you learn in the real world, it's acceptable to learn flips in gyms, but when learning vaults gyms will teach bad technique therefore destroying your knees and shins early. You don't need to get into shape to be good at parkour and don't let anyone tell you that. If you're out of shape lets parkour get you into shape, running goes great with parkour - the push ups are not needed. Parkour is about technique not strengh. I am not strong atall strong but I can climb up a wall very fast because I have good technique. Athletic gloves.. what? I regularly train with a large group or tracuers and none of them ever wear gloves. As for parkour shoes, many people recommend Ariaki's as they were designed for parkour.. NO! They're terrible, the best parkour shoes are either Nike running shoes or Asics. Pick up some Asic Enduro's or some Nike Darts. (Or if you can find them, get Kalenji's.. but they are extremely hard to find) As for light clothing, get some trakkies or some camo trousers or something. If you're wearing a hoodie you hood will get very annoying so I recommend getting a jumper. (see what I did there? ;) Lastly, if you really want to start parkour, find other people in your area who do it and train with them. Learning by yourself is hard but when you have someone there teaching you step by step it's easy. I've been training nearly 3 years ;) edit: People sometimes sterotype parkour as being big and dangerous but it really isn't. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajI5c7gC_tA&feature=related that's a good example of small community parkour from where I'm from.
Gimme a minute and I'll get a couple of videos from where I live. I know most of the guys that feature in these, they're only a year older than me.
Parkour, because the french can't come up with things other than running away
How could you guys forget the guy that inspired this whole sport?
quoting for new page

As much as I respect your knowledge and advice at parkour, knowing what some people on facepunch would do, this is for their own good.
Oh my GOD I love Mirror's Edge. Parkour is so damn fascinating and looks incredibly difficult considering the amount of stamina these guys have to have. I can't imagine doing the jumps they do.
i started doing parkour when i was about 12, but stopped when i was 13 because i didn't know anyone else that did it i started again a few months ago because i found out one of my friends did it. now almost all of my friends do. gloves are for pussies. i've never once used gloves when doing parkour. you develop callouses on your hands and just generally toughen them up any shoes are fine as long as they're padded and have grip i fucked up when i was trying to get onto a shipping container by wallrunning like 2 months ago and damaged a tendon in my left wrist. i was showing one of my friends that was newer to parkour how to get on top of and over stuff by running up it, and i was paying too much attention on explaining than actually doing it, and my hand slipped and i ended up falling down and hanging on with one finger. i couldnt use my wrist properly until a few weeks ago.
I live in NC, but my parents will probably go overprotective and not let me go (plus I'm way younger than you'd think). What county do you live in?
I pm'd you with some info. Would be cool if you could go.
I know no one who does Parkour. Living in rural Texas sucks D:
I'm going to update the OP. It appears I hit the audience of Facepunch that seems to know what they're doing.
remove gloves only pussies use gloves the more you do it, the tougher your hands get after a while if you practice often you'll develop callouses on your hands and they wont get ripped up or hurt. yeah it hurts until you do develop callouses, but hey, no pain no gain right? [editline]11:40PM[/editline] also
Also, most experienced traceurs will say that gloves are generally a bad thing because you lose the feeling of actual contact with the wall and it generally isn't as effective. So unless you have a condition in your hands where you need to where gloves(Which I actually do if it gets too cold...), then I reccommend training without gloves, sometimes it's also good to train barefoot on the occaision.
[editline]11:40PM[/editline] glove are bad mmmmkay [editline]11:40PM[/editline] dont do gloves kids
Sometimes you don't need fancy tricks, or shoes or much training. Just get to running, and watch out not to smash your face :)
Sometimes you don't need fancy tricks, or shoes or much training. The common moves are just good guidlines for you to adapt to depending on the situation.
Parkour isn't about the tricks or a set of moves. It's about the movement. At my first Jam (two weekends ago) one of the guys would do some sort of twisty flair thing everytime he konged over something. It didn't slow him down, so it was efficient, and it looked cool. It's all up to you how you want to do something.
Except parkour is a french word, and thus unbearably fancy and pretentious. OP calling it an art doesn't help, either.
it is art dancing is an art ballet is an art
What I mean is you don't need any equipment for running. Me and my friends usually run around like idiots climbing walls and shit in town. People like to stare at us. :downs:
I want to try this, looks good but you´d look like a dick doing it on your own.
it is art dancing is an art ballet is an art
How about no. You've used the absolute worst examples I can think of. I better not bother actually, your a 7/10 troll, I almost raged at this.
he is correct you know
I got some Japanese worker boots from Japan (the ones with the split big toe and basically being a giant rubber sock) Those work well
Parkour, the art of making yourself move like you're 90 when you're 40. Knees aren't bloody trampolines you damn hooligans.
fyi, you dont need gloves or PAKORE SHOEZ to do parkour, only fukken posers do that, i hate threads like these you always get uninformed idiots but who cares i do tricking it's better
Parkour, the art of making yourself move like you're 90 when you're 40. Knees aren't bloody trampolines you damn hooligans.
Why do you rip stiff that is obviously popular? You don't give proper reasons either. And if you do this right, your knees don't get fucked up.
Parkour, the art of making yourself move like you're 90 when you're 40. Knees aren't bloody trampolines you damn hooligans.
if you do shit properly you dont fuck yourself up
Parkour, the art of making yourself move like you're 90 when you're 40. Knees aren't bloody trampolines you damn hooligans.
If you do it right the force should be going into your muscles and absorbed, not into your knees.
OP updated with better advice, more training areas, and a small Health and Safety section.' I'll update it more when i'm not so lazy.
Quality thread.
