Here's our PSA we put together in a couple days. It's not the original we had in mind, but 25 seconds wasn't enough so we had to change it completely.
Could I get some crits on this? We got in the top 5, so now we have time to re-shoot and re-edit it. I showed it to a couple people and they didn't grasp that when he grabs the keys, then it shows him crashed, that he's just thinking about it, then at the end he's setting the keys down, deciding not to drive. Did you guys get that at all? Any ideas would be very helpful!

Also, try to maybe create two different color schemes for each scene. Have real life be more vibrant, and the the crash be more dull, like giving them a visual cue that its in the dudes head.

But from start to finish: At the beginning the drunk guy didn't really look drunk. He was walking waaay to coordinated while being so drunk he couldn't keep his head up. The focus was quite soft in the opening shot. I guess the red cups should indicate that there was a party but no one else was around. I got a bit distracted by the fact that at first you worked with your focus to bring certain things to our attention, in the middle of the video you practically had a lot in focus and in the end the keys were emphasized again by the shallow focus. One could argue that it is distinguishing the reality from imagination but it kinda looks like the imagination is real because of the documentaryesce style. The music is sad and I don't think for this kind of PSA it should be sad. If you hear that some kid got run over by a drunk driver you are sad but when you want to warn someone about a dangerous thing you should rather try to induce fear and respect. Also I think your clip would benefit if you would not just use one piece of music but rather background noise from the places you are like music and laughter at the party, a crash, sirens and in the end as the "realization" hits the actor some music or something. Maybe instead of walking up the stairs and taking the keys from the cupboard inside the house and than a switch to the crash outside you could lead the viewer to the car by drunkly walking away from a party, a shot with a cup in one hand an the other hand grabbing the keys and from there on your crash, rescue and putting the keys away and walking off thing.

But I agree, it is a tad long. We did shoot a few other shots where he was at a party with other people, but again, we only had 25 seconds to scrunch it into. I'll type the rest of my response up later.

I'm thinking having the camera stationary and a bit farther from the guy, with the party going on behind him with a lot of people and stuff while he's a bit darkened (sort of like a silhouette maybe?) with him stumbling (a bit more believable!) again. I dunno if you can imagine it, but yeah haha I also agree with the change of music, it comes across as really cheesy, although I really like the timing (except in the end, it kind of clips suddenly) Good luck buddy! It's really hard making a video in 25 seconds, but I think you have a pretty good chance! haha i might as well post this, I conceptualized, shot, and edited this teaser trailer for a this project that we had in school, each class had to make an original one-act play along with original soundtrack, playbill, souvenir program, and a trailer. it was crazy fun, super competitive, and the past few weeks was a blast! it was only supposed to be a minute long, and I got really good feedback from it both from teachers and students! haha managed to bag the best trailer award too, so that helps! it was a ton of fun to make, i've always been quite interested in film making and jumped at the chance to do so. even though it was sort of rushed (i forgot to fix some minor stuff!) and for the most part i was kind of gunning throughout the whole thing, i'm pretty proud of the results! we have another school project over the next few weeks, have to make a 10-15 min film this time, so this experience comes in real handy! hopefully it comes along pretty well!
Really liked the trailer. Had a nice tone and pacing. You said you would go bank and make things right. How so? The Video doesn't look like it had a negative outcome.

You kept the background noise in for that clip, and then kept all the others out. Otherwise it was pretty good.
Did this over a year ago. It was with other students and unfortunately the exposure was a bit low, yet looked fine on camera. It creates an eery feel I suppose. I directed this and edited also. It was a shame that the guy who was the editor in our group got lazy, sigh. It had to be a ten minute film. My regrets, as any filmmaker is with their work and always seeking to improve, was the overly long title sequence. Also, the interrogator and guy at the start weren't supposed to be main actors unfortunately. Someone had pulled out last minute so I had to save this project with the actors I had, change up the script a bit. Also had to do an experimental sort of video too :v: Anyway, working with a couple of mates on an idea that will include special effects, CGI such as planets, etc. We're hopefully going to go to town on it! We're all chipping in on the budget, so there will be money put forward to the project.
Hey, i know this video is danish, but could you maybe c/c it.
Not terrible. Shadows are a bit too blue for me. Don't like the static shot of just the mouth. You can obviously tell that he's not getting punched/kicked. You seem to re-use the same shot a few times and it gets repetitive sometimes. Also the continuous un focusing and refocusing I don't like.
An exercise I had to do where all of the sound was removed so I replaced all the sounds and made it much nicer to watch. Had to edit a short scene from the film "I Want Candy" without any prior knowledge to the film, was quite fun Was bored so I decided to make a mock trailer for "I Want Candy" with quite a twist to it.
http://fox47.com/sections/contests/msg2teens/ Well here's the rest of our competition. If you guys could, you can vote once a day from every IP address for the next month or so. My video is the first one (Memorial HS, Jake, Connor, PJ, Joe) but feel free to vote to whomever video you think is the best.
Hey, i know this video is danish, but could you maybe c/c it.
Since I don't understand danish the some of the scenes felt a bit boring because I don't speak the language and they are mostly in front of the same wall. The Scene where this one guy attacks the other one is a bit wired. There is slow motion in places seems odd. Usually slow motion is used to make a scene more dramatic. Like when some important person is shot and falls to the ground. In your scene the slow motion is not only applied to a drama spike (that is what I call the most dramatic part of the scene, might be used wrong =P) but instead to the whole first fighting scene. I'm not sure what the fighting scene is about from watching the clip alone but since the song title translates to "Something about racism" I assume it is a racially motivated attack. It might be helpful to make some introduction to the fight. Like you walking by some knuckleheads that yell at you and do something visually racist. You just ignore them but then they come after you and kick/punch you. If you do something like this the viewer doesn't only have a lyrical but also a visual context of the action in the video. If you do a fighting scene it can look a lot more real if you add more cuts into the scene to get some shots of the actors either punching or reacting to the punch (almost puking, hitting the ground, stumbling or similar things). The viewer doesn't have to see how someone gets actually hit in the face if they have enough context from before and after. In the end you hang yourself. The introduction to that scene is a bit unclear because you don't really recognize the chair as a chair. Different framing would be really helpful there. When you put the noose around your neck it doesn't look like you are standing on the chair because the camera shows so much space above you. You could try to bring the camera a bit lower so it looks like the camera is on a normal height and you are on the chair. I don't suggest you should actually stand on a chair and put a noose fixed to the roof around your neck. That is quite a big security risk if you slip and can cause internal injuries even if someone puts a chair back under your feet 5 seconds later. I liked that your video wasn't as hectic as some of the rap videos I have seen. But it also was a bit boring with repeating scene setups or long stretched clips. I would decide if it would be more of a story video or more of a video of you rapping into the camera. If you choose the latter the video would benefit from some location and perspective changes to make it more interesting.
Just thought I'd post these since they are very interesting and helpful. There are many more to watch, just check out the related videos. I really wish I could make a general filmmaking/videography thread where we can just discuss filmmaking as well as share our stuff, but I don't know how the mods would feel about that considering this thread exists. Anyway, I got a shit ton of gear for Christmas and I can't want to get out and make use of it. I'd post something but right now I'm not proud enough of anything I've made to really show it off right now....

took this at new years, not really creative but it looks cool the AF on the a77 for video is insane, it works so well. for the parts where it went out of focus that was me toggling it, it's easy to go between settings.
I've been practicing color correction and color grading. I took some old footage I recorded over the summer and played around with it: I think it turned out quite nice. The footage was recorded with my 550D with a custom flat color profile (Technicolor's "Cinestyle" to be exact. https://www.technicolorcinestyle.com/download/). Makes correction and grading way more fun because you have more control of the image. I've also been playing around with the 2.35:1 "Cinescope" aspect ratio. I'm obviously just cropping my footage when I export it, but it really gives it that cinematic look. Using Magic Lantern, I'm able to apply an overlay while I record that shows the crop areas for 2.35:1. That way I can frame every shot for the aspect ratio and just crop in premiere with confidence I won't be cutting someones head off or something.
Looks nice! I myself am trying to lean a thing about color correction and color grading. Today is the last day to vote for my PSA! You guys should be awesome and go vote! (The first option, Memorial HS) http://fox47.com/sections/contests/msg2teens/videos/madison-memorial-hs-1.shtml
Constructive criticism? Before you say it, I know the resolution is awful, my camera isn't meant for doing that stuff well. Also, the music does have those weird artifacts,
I feel like I'm bumping but this is somewhat related to video and just wanted to post that I finally got one of those VAF AA filters for my 60D from Mosaic Engineering and It's quite a major difference. [editline]21st February 2013[/editline] I'll be doing a side by side comparison video tomorrow.

Makes more sense for "thoughts", as thoughts usually happen in the blink of an eye. Also gives you more time to edit other shots in, such as making it clear he's been drinking with friends at a party or something. Draw more attention to him thinking about whether to drive or not. Right when he picks up those keys, pull the shot to his face, and make the transition between real-life and his thoughts clear at that point. I also think it could have been more powerful without the narration.

I thought this came out real nice. Still from yesterday's one second video, for my one second a day video project thing. Skin tones are mega overexposed, but if I dropped the exposure any lower, I would have lost all the floaty bubbles :( Had my 6D on a cheap tripod, held down on it's side, hanging over the water, with only a propane bottle weighing it down. I'll release another test video once I reach day 90! (Q1 of the video) (Clicky to view stills for each day up until today!)
Since this is a videography thread, here's a videography related piece of gear [thumb] http://i.minus.com/jbrYFxBoa4sTsz.jpg[/thumb] 60D + 50mm f/1.8 + flycam nano I find that the glidecam hd 2000 is much smoother and better than the much cheaper, flycam nano. It works more or less the same, and now I want one. Also you're kind of supposed to use a wide lens but I decided to use the light weight 50mm.
What are your thoughts on glidecams/flycams/steadicams? I've only experienced one cheap one, which was hard to balance. Are they worth it? Which ones to get?
