I haven't watched any anime with mecha's in them
I just don't see the idea appealing
gigantic robots beating up other gigantic robots using obtuse terminology that seems like it's made up on the spot??
I don't know why I don't like it
I just don't, I've been trying to ask myself why, but he's being stubborn.
Same, but most of it seemed irrelevant anyway. [sp]What I got from it was: MC is a troop in a war, the big ship he should have gotten on went to retreat but he couldn't make it out in time and ended up getting sucked into some time/blackhole thing.[/sp]
Regardless, the show is pretty great so far. I caught up today.
yea it casually dropped out 100 different terms and then casually threw them away almost immediately.
it seems like a terrible way to start a show
I don't have a preference for mechs, but i wouldn't not watch a show because it has mechs in it
I don't have a preference for mechs, but i wouldn't not watch a show because it has mechs in it
But most shows with mechs in them are solely focused on mechs
But most shows with mechs in them are solely focused on mechs
Watch Infinite Stratos, it's not focused on the mechs at all, only the 14 year old girls.
[sp]I'm kidding, please don't do that to yourself.[/sp]

No it isn't
Those terms don't matter to the actual plot of the show

Code Geass isn't solely focused on the mechs, at least not in first season.

yea that's why it was a bad way to start it.
They spent ~10 minutes trying to establish some background of one of the main characters, but in the process did an extreme infodump that was completely unnecessary to the actual plot of the show. edit: okay not completely unnecessary
Hell, even starting directly after the first commercial break [sp]where they're trying to break into the mech and he wakes up[/sp] would've been a way better start to the show. Then maybe towards the end go back into ~flashback mode~ explaining some more about his background.
Don't get me wrong, I like it so far, but the first half of the first episode was bad.
edit2: or maybe don't even bother explaining the background of [sp]how he came to be on earth[/sp]; i don't think it even matters.

It's not like you're going to be quizzed on it or anything like that
Getting ticked off about meaningless terms is like getting ticked off at background characters
You non-mech anime watchers are really missing out.
Yasuriho Imagawa has done really great things.
Giant Robo is like the Justice League with a kid with a robot. Its a masterpiece, and a giant love letter to Mitsuteru Yokoyama -creator of Tetsujin-28, the first giant robot show. I really hope one day in the future that someone will do something with it again.

He also did great things with Tetsujin 28 in 2004.
The one thing Yasuhiro Imagawa did that everyone from the Toonami crowd would know of, is G Gundam.

Another must-watch is one of Mamoru Oshii's masterpieces, Patlabor 2. (Might as well watch the first one while you're at it.)

I could go on and on really, but those are some things definitely worth checking out. I mostly wanted to spread the love for Yasuhiro Imagawa. Don't get me started on the more realistic military-esque shows like Gundam 0079 and Armored Trooper Votoms.

wormhole shenanigans
Also are the recommends ever going to get updated in the op
It's not like you're going to be quizzed on it or anything like that

haha i'm not ticked off, i just think it's a dumb way to start a show. If anything I was laughing at how ridiculous some of the terms were that they were throwing around at the start. [sp]Quantum whatever the fuck bombs[/sp] among other things.
[sp]he doesn't know how he got there either, that's the point[/sp]
I know that. And that basically makes the first half even more pointless. I meant that they shouldn't given a [sp]here's the MC before earth, and what he was doing[/sp] thing, they could've just skipped that portion and nothing would be lost.
well yea, and that basically makes the first half even more pointless.
You really think they did that opening for nothing? I'm pretty sure the anime will get back to it eventually, I hope.
Also are the recommends ever going to get updated in the op
It will eventually(tm).
This season of Nyaruko is so much better then the last. By better, I mean it has 200% more references and satire.
well yea, and that basically makes the first half even more pointless.
the first half is to show the viewer how advanced the human alliance is and what kind of society they live in, so the viewer understands why Ledo acts like he does
[editline]k[/editline]
and who knows if it will become important later

The first half [sp]showcases ledo's apathy towards living in the "home hub", and how he's a cold heartless soldier. Then it segways into hundreds of lasers firing off back and forth with terms getting thrown everywhere, showing the struggle between the both races. And then his captain sacrifices himself.[/sp]
The second half [sp]has ledo waking up in an unknown location, where a bunch of people speaking a foreign tongue unknown to him are trying to break into his mech fruitlessly. Judging by the interactions between the Mech AI & Ledo in that brief exchange, it's simple to see how much of a difference there is between earthHumans and spaceHumans. This is further expanded upon shortly after he steps out of the craft, where he looks around at the equipment shocked at how primitive it is. When he's forced into a situtation where he can't communicate with potentially hostile "captors", he acts like someone with extensive combat experience which would cause someone to believe he has training as some form of soldier. The laser pistol he fires off later in the episode shows just how much more advanced their tech is comparative to the earthHumans. He even later explains that he's part of the alliance to combat the evil floating space plant race.[/sp]
Nothing explained in the first half isn't also explained in a better manner in the second half.
edit: or was that last part of the "second half spoiler" in the "first portion of episode 2". I watched both episodes at the same time so I can't remember at the moment.
and who knows if it will become important later
What do you mean "who knows"? This is a Gen Urobuchi show.
[sp]You really expect him to introduce vicious nautilus/plant aliens and not have them come back later?[/sp]
I mean, sure, it could happen, but it's kind of like if you believed him when he said he was going to do a straight happy magical girl show with Madoka Magica.
also why are we putting vague stuff from the first episode in spoiler tags
it's like putting "Harry Potter is a wizard!" in spoiler tags
