Why does everyone think that their first album is their best? If you dislike Slipknot, the first album is -not- going to help. Good song.
This song ALWAYS gets me going. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvSnEB8J8Xw
I never knew their lyrics were so pompous
Well, it's named after a pretty pompous quote in the first place. "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."
That's a pretty ignorant interpretation of religion. It's almost on the right track, but even saying that I feel like I'm giving it too much credit. [editline]05:54PM[/editline] This the other extreme of music I dislike, extremely honest, but extremely stupid (lyrically at least, other bands including Rise Against and Anti-Flag among others).
Please don't tell me you're insulting Karl Marx? :colbert: Besides, I don't see what's so pompous about the song now that I think about it.
Well not only is it pompous simply calling such a number of people idiots, and the lyrics themselves are, ironically, incredibly hypocritical. Of all of the "philosophers" to quote, Karl Marx is not the best. It's the 21st century people. I mean marxism itself mirrors religion in theory.
You're going to sit here and tell me that the majority of people on the Earth, aren't idiots? How are they hypocritical?
The idea of being an idiot itself is a matter of perspective. What constitutes an idiot? It sounds like they are just being douche bags. What would you think of a guy just shoving through a crowd yelling, "Get out of my way you idiots!" He's just an asshole with no respect for anyone. What the fuck do they know? They think they honestly understand the people that they are attacking. I already said why they were being hypocritical. The song is an attack on religion, while the philosopher whom they have taken the name of the song from preaches a religion. Marx himself has admitted this.
One thing I know for sure The hypothetical won't work anymore One wrong move and they will pound!
Marxism itself is entirely "hypothetical." It's based on nothing but poor assumptions. [editline]11:53PM[/editline] At least a band like Atheist tried to propose a solution back when they wrote about this type of thing, they didn't just complain. Slipknot sounds to me like the whines of a hair dyed neurotic lazy faux-informed waste of life.
It's not a song about Marxism, geeze. This song has nothing to do with Marxism. The hypothetical won't work... you're taking this off on a tangent that really has little to do with anything. Just because Marxism is stupid ( and trust me, I'm not a devout follower of great God Marx ) doesn't mean he couldn't be right about something. Being an idiot is not a matter of perspective, it's quite the opposite, being an objective trait. This song isn't a guy shoving his way through a crowd, it's a piece of art that they made and are not imposing on you in any way. Every analogy you've made is just... really irrelevant. If you're not an idiot, this song isn't attacking you. I didn't post it for the lyrics anyway. That's one of their weaker songs lyrically. I like the music. Are you saying "...And Justice For All" is a shitty song because they propose no better solution than what's observed in its lyrics? So we're no longer allowed to make observations without proposing solutions? In fact, I just had a grand idea. Here's a great alternative to religion: Nothing.
I don't know how you could argue being stupid as objective. You could say intelligence quotient is objective, but certainly not general intelligence. Of course what you think is stupid is subjective, it's not you are looking at intelligence from an unbiased scientific viewpoint, and I'm certain Slipknot isn't. When they're saying everyone is stupid, they're not refering to low IQs, they are saying what they think is stupid (people in general), just as a Bill Haley fan might think Metal is stupid. You can't scientifically prove either is stupid. Nietzsche argued morality is stupid, can you prove him wrong objectively? You have a point saying that he isn't imposing on me. At the same time, what's the point in saying "everyone is stupid," what kind of message is that? Such a ridiculous generalization is nothing past ignorant. Who's to say who is stupid? I was saying in general they don't provide solutions, not just in that song. "People = Shit"? This band is a joke to me at this point. My reasoning? This here has to be in my eyes the most ignorant and just plain terri-bad song in the world lyrically. It sounds like a fucking Insane Clown Posse song.
YEEEAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!, YEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!!,YEEEAAAHHHH!!!!!!! Here we go again motherfucker! Come on down, and see the idiot right here Too fucked to beg and not afraid to care What's the matter with calamity anyway? Right? Get the fuck outta my face Understand that i can't feel anything It isn't like I wanna sift through the decay I feel like a wound, like I got a fuckin' Gun against my head, you live when I'm dead One more time, mother fucker Everybody hates me now, so fuck it Blood's on my face and my hands, and I Don't know why, I'm not afraid to cry But that's none of your business Whose life is it? Get it? See it? Feel it? Eat it? Spin it around so i can spit in its face I wanna leave without a trace Cause I don't wanna die in this place People = Shit (x4) People = Shit (Whatcha gonna do?) People = Shit (Cuz I am not afraid of you) People = Shit (I'm everything you'll never be) People = Shit It never stops - you can't be everything to everyone Contagion I'm sitting at the side of Satan What do you want from me? They never told me the failure I was meant to be Overdo it - don't tell me you blew it Stop your bitchin' and fight your way through it I'M - NOT - LIKE - YOU - I - JUST - FUCK - UP C'mon mother fucker, everybody has to die C'mon mother fucker, everybody has to die People = Shit (x13) People = Shit (Whatcha gonna do?) People = Shit (Cuz I am not afraid of you) People = Shit (I'm everything you'll never be) People = Shit Got That? RIGHT!
There's no such thing as an "alternative" to religion. The "belief" in nothing is a religion.
One of their albums they were pissed off with each other throughout the whole recording and mixing. I think People = Shit comes from that album.
I kinda like slipknot, but I hate maggots ( no offense OP)
What the hell is going on. As the Slipknot fan site http://www.slipknot-metal.com says, Opium of the People is "a message that all contained on the album is for the bands benefit only, therefor, don't expect all the songs to be relatable to your own life" (quoted from the website). Also: When asked why "People=Shit" Crahan says "We are what we are, we just waste and we ruin and we corrupt, and we destroy," so People=Shit basically because we are our own worst enemy, we are going to be the end of the earth and no one seems to give a shit. The message trying to get across is that of the human race is depleating itself of the simple pleasures in life and that everyone is now fake. Fake meaning people, society, everyone, is now pretending to be someone else. Not caring about others, and just themselves. In this act, they are a disease put on earth and we must show them the reality of life. They kill themselves, and or others, because they do not know what is going on in the real world because they are so wrapped up in the world politics and media, they hide reality from people because it will scare them. People need to know. People are the #1 cause of destruction on this earth and this needs to change, but the sad fact is, we can't. That is what they are trying to get across. So lets end this shit right here.
even if it's not "relatable" it has a meaning and I think that's an ignorant viewpoint on life. People kill, destroy because they want power, it has nothing to do with media or politics. they destroy so they can advance and thus give themselves more power to create, to alter their perceived reality. what they create with this power is what separates good from evil. even the act of destruction creates. Not physically, of course. destruction isn't just a bad thing, it's not black and white. Beyond that, everyone is now fake? The way people act around each other, how they socialize, hasn't changed, ever. People are acting the same way they always have, people act as they want to be perceived. What they want to be perceived as is what changes, but no matter what it is they want to be, it doesn't change the fact that it's "fake." This is just ignorant boo hoo-ing. It's unproductive and quite frankly it's boring.
I'm a big fan of Slipknot. They make really good music, and all 9 of their members are put to good use in making the music which is impressive. I see a lot of people saying they suck and I would like to kindly ask you to re-word yourselves. You don't like them, they don't suck. Don't be arrogant people.
This is wrong, Joey Jordison isn't a good drummer, he's fucking terrible, one of the worst drummers I have ever heard in a mainstream band. If you think Joey is a good drummer, you obviously have no musical experience in an active workflow, most likely you just have a drum set to fuck around with it. Or you don't have a drumset at all... Joey has alot to learn from the bigs, oh wait, the smaller people, because they don't wear masks, they just focus on their drumming skills rather than their showmanship.... .
Joey sure isn't one of the best drummers out there (I'm kind of a drummer myself, played for about a year now :P), but I respect him because he has got pretty much musical talent. He has made many Slipknot songs all by himself including the lyrics, drums, guitar etc.
I really like the song Before I Forget. Haven't heard more.
Most people who hate Slipknot hate them just because they think it makes them cool to ride the band wagon. The band is overrated and very well known, but I don't judge a band by its fan-base, I judge a band by its music. There are tons of better bands, but they don't suck. I used to be obsessed with them but they aren't in my top ten favorite bands anymore.

ITT 12 year olds defend their favorite "band". [editline]09:21PM[/editline] Seriously Slipknot is horrible, guys.

Funny, people who listen to metal are the only ones who whine about their own genre.
ITT 12 year olds defend their favorite "band". [editline]09:21PM[/editline] Seriously Slipknot is horrible, guys.
Well you don't seem more mature than that either...
Because anyone's opinion that differs from mine is incorrect.
Correct.

SiC and Spit It Out are 2 awesome songs
SiC and Spit It Out are 2 awesome songs
So is Before I Forget and The Blister Exists.
So is Before I Forget and The Blister Exists.
Yep.
I don't get the hate for Slipknot, I know a lot of Goths that hate this band yet I know there are atleast 4 songs on the Vol. 3 album that they would like if they weren't on the bandwaggon of hate for Slipknot. I've been into them for about 4 years, Awesome band, there sound is unique and they have some great lyrics, if I was in a band, I'd probably write lyrics in a similar mannor.
