Oh my god, I loved trap town, i watched that video every day for a week :D
This is still possible in-game however it requires a lot of resources. It's only been dumbed down because VALVe wanted as many people as possible to be able to run it, not just the úber high enders.
But Crytek use it
"Can I run this on my 486?"
What the fuck you can't alter displacements dynamically. Where did this technology go?
FFS! Apparently my comp can't handle HL2, now I got to go use the 360 version :bang: Bullshit! I can handle CSS, no problem but HL2 won't work.
I got these movies in my CS:CZ box, in high, direct stream quality. I probably should upload.
FFS! Goddam why didn't they keep half these features? The dynamic displacements, the more advanced lighting, it would all have been so good :(.
Goddam why didn't they keep half these features?
Because they hate you.
They weren't levels at all, they were designed specifically to show at E3. Everything in them was completely scripted. Download Missing Information, it has conversions of the E3 maps in it. You'll see what I mean.
Or just download the leak that stoped valve from making half life 2 from looking like this.
Oh man I remember this. Seeing it for the first time, I was like "HOLY FUCKING SHIT LOOK AT THE PHYSICS THAT'S TOTALLY RAD FUCK ME LOOK AT THAT 3 LEGGED SHIT GOD DAMN."

Jeeze, I remember thinking that the house exploding in the Episode 2 demos was jaw dropping amazing.
It was. Stuff like that hadn't been done before that well.
I like when he threw the camera through one of the screens and everyone went "WHOA HOLY SHIT FUCKS"
Man They should have made the escape from kleiners lab the same as in the beta/e3 demo :-(
I want the displacement changing thingy back. There's still an entity for it, but not functional. FIX IT VALVE!
Man, in some ways hl2 didn't live up to their promotions.
I want the displacement changing thingy back. There's still an entity for it, but not functional. FIX IT VALVE!
Maybe they'll bring it back in Episode 3? :v:
Man, in some ways hl2 didn't live up to their promotions.
Probably because of the Hijack.
Probably because of the Hijack.
Oh yeah because when the beta was leaked they had to stop development and go into therapy.
Oh yeah because when the beta was leaked they had to stop development and go into therapy.
Yeah, I know, right [/sarcasm] Due to the Hijack, all of their secrets had been revealed and the HL2 Beta you saw at the E3 had to be scrapped and done over. That Axel guy (Some German hacker) had gotten a hold of the Source Code and the files from HL2 Beta, then he began distributing them online. VALVe was forced to start over because of this. We have the HL2 we see today, just as good, and doesn't have any silly shit in it. They faced the same problem with HL1 before it was released, they had to revise and rethink it (Because the Alpha/Beta of HL1 looked like something like a mod for D00M/Quake), they had to start over.
Holy shit this game looks so epic when does it come out?
It comes out in 2012.
What the fuck you can't alter displacements dynamically. Where did this technology go?
It's in Hl2, EP 1, and EP 2. Scripted Happenings, such as The airship falling through the ceiling in Ep 1, the Bridge in ep 2, and, wait what was the one in hl2 again... Well whatever, I think that's when he ment. When a scripted (or otherwise) event happens, it can change the way you go about something, or the way it interacts with something else. But I may be wrong, I don't really know for sure.
Oh yeah because when the beta was leaked they had to stop development and go into therapy.
It wasn't even a beta! The developement stage was never announced and besides if you download the leak you'd most likely say late alpha.
It wasn't even a beta! The developement stage was never announced and besides if you download the leak you'd most likely say late alpha.
This. There is no "finished" alpha. We have a "game" with portions of the technology, but only portions of the storyline in differing stages presented seperately - and that was before 2002, judging from the E3 maps from 2002 and 2003 respectively.
Guys, the displacement thing was to show what the source engine could do, not what would be in HL2. I think the E3 video is still impressive by today's standards. All those levels were simply showing what COULD be done in HL2, it wasn't planned to be any part of it, it's pretty obvious since none of those levels actually appear in HL2.
Nostalgia OVERLOAD.
The first time I saw the source engine was actually a trailer for CSS, (I was too young to understand english propertly so it was no use trying to play the HL series and I loved CS back in the day) it was a trailer showing de_aztec, I was like HOLY FUCK THAT IS SO FUCKING AWESOME, the ct's were up on this bridge and shooting down on the T's and these sexy water particles came on screen and the ragdoll effects were so amazing, by the end of the trailer I was like :aaa: [editline]11:30AM[/editline] Oh hey, I found it!
They were doing a lot more with physics back then...
