What's a good bridge camera? I'm getting a dSLR in October, but I need a megazoom for the summer and the start of the term. I'm looking at the Fuji HS20, but I'd still go for second opinions. My budget's $500 and I want full manual modes, but most megazooms seem to have that anyway.
Just get a DSLR now, you can get one for $500.

[editline]25th June 2011[/editline]
OR the nikon D3000, both coming with 18-55mm lenses
If you buy second hand you can get a T1i or T2i for that price.

There aren't any that'll be as useful as a DSLR. You buy a bridge if you don't have the budget for one, when you do. Stick with that.
If I buy the Nikon 3000, I can max out my budget, use it for three months and then never touch it again. That's a waste. If I get the bridge, I can also buy a decent bag and have money left over. Once I'm done with it, it's going to my Mum who doesn't need a DSLR and will probably never use any manual modes.
So, I don't want a DSLR, I want a megazoom....
Oh, and I wouldn't even buy another lens for the DSLR if I got it.
It's cheaper (And better) in the long run if you buy a DSLR and a cheap single zoom lens (Perhaps a Sigma 18-200) if that's the case.
It'll do exactly the same thing, give you more features, better quality, and the ability to learn more easily. It also won't cost you that much more. Why not try going for a pre-owned or refurbished one off ebay? That'll save enough to buy your accessories.
What if you buy the superzoom and never touch it again? That's also a waste. But in the end, if you decide to sell, a DSLR is worth more than a superzoom (Since they go out of date quicker)
[editline]27th June 2011[/editline]
Here, you can get a D3000 (No lens) refurbished for $300-$350, then a sigma zoom lens (70-300) for about $100, a cheap bag won't put you back much. A superzoom will cost atleast $500 for a decent one.
so, i need a DSLR, that can also do 1080p movies. ~500$ budget.

Don't know about prices so don't pin me on this, but your best bet would be a Canon 550D(T2i)
If it's too pricey then look for it used somewhere

its a bit, like 250$, past my budget. is there anything cheaper?

If you don't mind losing the ability of having an external mic jack and 24 fps movies, then the 500D (T1i) should be more in your budget (Especially if you buy used/re-furbished)
the 500D only has auto-exposure in videos.
Considering selling my 350D body-only and upgrading, how much do you think I could get for it with a battery grip? Post that, what would you guys consider upgrading to? Budget ideally ~£400.

looks like the absolute max you will get for it is around $200 after checking ebay.
for about 400 pounds I'd probably look for a second hand Canon 550D.

Suggestions of places to look secondhand?
so it's not really possible to get a dslr that shoots 1080p at at least 60fps for about 500$?
so it's not really possible to get a dslr that shoots 1080p at at least 60fps for about 500$?
Woah, I wish! No DSLR's currently on the market that shoot 1080p60fps, so it will be a good few years before its that affordable.
I bet £10 the Canon 5D MK3 is first on the market with 1080p60fps!
so what about 30fps?

Why is that so damn cheap? I thought radio transmitters and receivers would set me back hundreds!
because they're so shit in comparison. a) reliability is probably through the floor b) no TTL metering
(neither will probably be an issue for you in the foreseeable future)
Buy Yongnuo RF-602s or 603s, they are reliable and cheap. If you want wireless TTL you will spend a fortune.
found another guy on craigslist now that i have the monies. D3100 for 450$ = good deal?
so what about 30fps?
Nikon D5100, Canon 550D and up? Panasonic do pretty good DSLR video on the GH2.
found another guy on craigslist now that i have the monies. D3100 for 450$ = good deal?
D3100 AND the 18-55 VR? If its in good condition, that's a good deal.

Don't go Nikon if you are going to shoot video, although it is decent Canon's video leaves it in the dust.

Canon, circa 2008.
i'm fairly sure that's more about editing and knowing what you're doing than the camera...
[editline]29th June 2011[/editline]
regardless of that, my main use for it will be shooting textures for 3d modeling.
