I was looking at a comparison video between the Nikon D5100 and the Canon 550D/T2i with video functionality and frankly I couldn't notice any differences. I'm sure someone will say that the T2i is better and I'm sure they're right but personally I'm not that picky.

Oh sorry it was the T3i, no difference though. xD
Though the quality is good, be aware that the Nikon D5100 does not allow you to manually set the exposure in video mode. Not sure about manual focus in video mode though...I think you can do it. Woops no automerge...
I still don't understand why one would want to change the exposure in the middle of a video clip
What are you talking about? Do you not use manual mode on your camera like almost everyone does. Shooting video on the Nikon is like shooting your photos in Auto mode. [editline]9th August 2011[/editline] The Nikon has far less creative control, it may have good quality, but you will find yourself severely limited.

And in a video what sort of situation would call for an emergency exposure change anyway

If you are looking to do video I have no idea why you are looking at Nikon for that.

Sigh. That's like saying 'I don't know when one would use manual exposure when taking a photo.' Waste your money buying a D5100 if you wan't, but if you wan't to shoot video you will become very frustrated.

I've already wasted my money on a D3100, haven't tried out the video yet though

You can figure yourself why it's bad for creative video when you actually try to make a proper video with it.
everyone here seemed to be really against nikon but all the reviews and videos said it was actually pretty good, we'll see how it goes
what reviews? did any directly compare it to the 550D for video production as we are doing?
what reviews? did any directly compare it to the 550D for video production as we are doing?
digitalrev did a comparison and they were pretty much equal in terms of picture quality etc. , the only thing they said would make the 550D better for video if you're getting serious was the external mic input, but I have an external audio source sorted out and I checked out a lot of video tests for both cameras and they seemed very similar
Yeah but you are comparing on raw quality and not the actual control you get over the video. Have fun regretting your decision!

Buy a 1000d or old Canon DSLR instead of investing in a completely different system, so you don't end up buying lenses and accessories for a system when you will eventually switch over anyway. Sorry I'm just annoyed because you ignored the advice everyone gave you.
That's not nice :( What can a man do if he's on a budget?
Save his money [editline]9th August 2011[/editline]
There's always lens adapters if I switch to Canon
you'd still have no AF :v:
Save his money
it was the £400 D3100 kit or a £260 camcorder which would have been worse than the D3100 in video, and wouldn't include any sort of still image capability

Either way you should have just got a film SLR or a cheap Canon DSLR if you wanted to do filming. Though you could have just waited until you had £50 more.

I seriously want to know when you'd need to manually adjust exposure during a video. I could try to Google it, but obviously you know.
