The two may not be mutually exclusive. :v:
I have sex with my camera all the time.

You may want to invest in a spare battery pack or some sets of rechargeable batteries. And maybe a gorilla pod instead of that little tiny one that costs $2.65. Everything else looks fine.

Get some extra batteries, rechargeable ones. They are extremely handy, when power gets low. Oh and the tripod, since it's light you might want to get some sandbags or something so it doesn't topple over when it's windy outside.
I can imagine that...taking an awesome video ontop of a ledge...tripod with camera falls, have a brain aneurism.
Friend wanting an SLR for prom - not sure how light/dark it will be in there. Budget £350 - ebay is OK. Recommendations?

Probably a second hand nikon + 50 1.8
Crank that ISO up. Nikons tend to have better ISO performance.
I was thinking a MPB - 400D + 50mm 1.8 or a 20D + 50mm 1.8 but was concerned about the focal length - think it will be of the right range for indoor shots of friend and crap like that?

Tell him the results he'll get from and SLR he doesn't know how to use will be on par with something cheaper just on auto mode.

400D has bad ISO performance (and only up to 1600 without custom firmware) so unless you can't get anything else I'd avoid it.
just get a compact with a powerful flash - you'll end up reverting to it
I took these at my school ball, have a look at the EXIF on the digital ones if you want

TF2 players go outdoors?
Some very nice pictures here, I think the noise adds in some of them.
Yeah, it's a tradition at my school on the morning of the school ball to go in fancy dress and raise money for some charity or something.
I think the big difference that needs to be understood with the noise is colour vs monochrome. colour noise looks really splotchy and instantly takes away from the photo, you want to get rid of all of that, In my experience that wont harm IQ. Monochrome noise on the other hand is the light/dark variations inside of the image, which will look good if it suits the aesthetic of what's being shot. Trying to remove monochromatic noise will kill the sharpness in your photos, avoid it unless you know what you're doing.
I have no idea what I'm doing, but I know I want to do something. I mean, I've poked around, and all I've used is my mom's camera (canon powershot sx110 is), and I don't really know what I'm looking at.
Any help?

PowerShot's are pretty good cameras, but lacking in ISO performance. All of the shots on my Flickr are with a PowerShot G11.
Go here to learn some of the basics: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1001898-General-Photography-Learning-the-basics
After you get the hang of it with that camera, and see if you like it, think about getting your own, more serious gear.

Any recommendation depends on two things, mainly. Firstly, are you looking for something to take nice pictures of family and friends, or do you want to go out into the country/street to take pretty pictures? What are your needs/wants?
Secondly, is there anything you'd like to do you can't with your current camera?

I don't have a camera, technically, and my mom would prefer if I didn't use hers.

Like False said, I'd read up on how cameras work and see if it interests you. From there, look at your budget and interests.

ok.
Hello Guys,
today coming private here!
I am searching for a camera mostly to take pictures of the landscape and also portraits. I've searched for a while and found this to be a good "starter" setup:
- Camera: Nikon D5100
- Lens: AF-S DX 18-105 mm VR
- Filter (mostly to protect the lens): http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0000AHOJU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A27OLCLZ3VT6X1
- Memory: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0037FLUYU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=AGDD4B1IH3F5X
- Bag: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003ANRC14/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&m=A20UZELQNI6BUJ

Any suggestions? Change anything? Price should stay below 900€
I wouldn't go a big zoom like that, get a pair of prime lenses. a 30mm (or something around there) and a 50mm should do you well
Ok, might I ask why it's better? For the quality or the price? Or both?
Also, am I right that the small (included) flash is not good for portraits?
For portraits you want a low aperture (the thing that makes backgrounds blurry), something that zoom lenses can't provide at a low price.
If you want flash I've heard good things about the SB-600, and I would get a set of asian RF Triggers, an umbrella, and a stand. I have Cactus V5 triggers and they never miss a beat.
Thanks for explaining. Flash is something for the next month, some time to raise money.
Alright, also thanks for the lens suggestions, will do it your way then.
Evrything else is alright?
for lens get the 18-55 VR and the 35mm 1.8 DX
great combo
