a 550D w/magic lantern is prolly enough, get a juicedlink for XLR input and save money from a 5D on a decent bit of glass
Going to be using my next pay check to buy a film camera. Any suggestions? My budget cap is 200 CAD
Going to be using my next pay check to buy a film camera. Any suggestions? My budget cap is 200 CAD
I can't remember if you are Nikon or Canon, but the EOS 3 is great if you can find one at a good price. It's basically a sensor-less 5D, and you won't need to have a separate set of lenses (if you're Canon. Also, "fullframe" means no EF-s compatibility). They went for about $1500 new in the late 90's, and now you can easily see them going for around $200 used. I paid $160 for mine. It has all the basic modes DSLR's have - auto, aperture priority, shutter priority, program, bulb, manual, etc. As you would expect, all the mechanicals are automated. You put the roll in, draw out the lead, and close up the back - it takes care of the rest. The craziest feature is the 45 point AF system that has a mode which will focus on what you're looking at by tracking eye movement. The two downsides are that it will pretty much eat up your whole budget (you still have to buy film and develop it!) and you miss out on some of the charm that you would get with an older manual camera, but it's a small price to pay for an idiot-proof 35mm.
Well I get about 300 per pay check so I'll have money left over. I just don't want to spend all of it. I'll definitely look into the EOS 3 later though. Thanks
Now it's either a Canon F1 or the Canon EOS 3
EOS 3.
EOS 3.
yes
Damn, theres an EOS 3 on Gumtree for £150.. so tempted.. anyway. Best P&S for <£150 gogogo
oh dear, a friend of mine posted on Facebook that he wants a DSLR, so I just told him that a good entry level DSLR would be something like a D5000, told him the price and he just stopped replying to me I think I made the world a better place
he can't afford a dslr, it's not a crime is it?
this is the kind of guy that has never been interested in photography since 10 minutes ago and thinks good cameras are dirt cheap, give it a day and he'll have changed his mind completely.
this is the kind of guy that has never been interested in photography since 10 minutes ago and thinks good cameras are dirt cheap, give it a day and he'll have changed his mind completely.
ahh fair enough
this is the kind of guy that has never been interested in photography since 10 minutes ago and thinks good cameras are dirt cheap, give it a day and he'll have changed his mind completely.
Or you could just suggest the cheaper alternatives and let him decide himself.
Now it's either a Canon F1 or the Canon EOS 3
F1's aren't bad, because they have really really really really really cheap lenses for them, because they lack autofocus. The FD lenses have auto aperture, and I'm not really sure if the FL lenses do. The EOS is a much better system, but if you are wanting diverse lenses, the F1 is probably a better bet.
I'm aspiring to be a journalist and I want to be a shutterbug as well. I know a friend of mine who uses a Canon Rebel a lot, and it seems like it takes good enough pictures. Would a Rebel be good? I'm planning on asking my parents for some kind of camera for my birthday or Christmas - if they haven't already gotten me one.
I have a rebel t2i/550D it's pretty good. I recommend it.
It would be pretty much my first higher quality camera, if that matters. I've only ever worked with rnadom digitals and the like.
+1 for the 550D here [editline]20th September 2011[/editline] So you know, rebel t2i and 550D are the same camera

Basically, from what you're saying, you want a miracle camera and lens which is great at everything. What kind of lens do you want? To give us some more information.
Basically, from what you're saying, you want a miracle camera and lens which is great at everything.
You're reading into it wrong. As someone who hasn't quite broken in to photography yet, he just wants a pointer in the right direction. He isn't out to compare pro bodies and lenses, he probably doesn't even know what he wants in a lens yet, which is why I agree with the Canon Rebel idea. From there, he can get a feel for what he likes after learning and gaining experience.
nikon releases some tiny ILC's emphasis towards crEatIvity with its ability to basically stream video and then select individual frames afterwards
Makes my hopes high for their next DSLR processor, if this thing can do 1080p at 60 fps and shoot 60 full resolution images at 10 fps, all for $650.

What size lenses does it use, and how would the crop factor affect them?
So this thing only shoots video correct? What size lenses does it use, and how would the crop factor affect them?
no, guy, it's a stills camera with some fancy video stuff. 2.7x crop, 10mm = 27mm equiv etc
2.7x? fuckk that

Currently have the 500D, but I am upgrading since I feel limited by the bad quality of pictures at ISO 400 and the crop sensor, that and I am beginning to taking money for pictures. Will be buying the 5D mark II kit with the 24-105mm L lens, adding the 70-200mm lens later on.
no, guy, it's a stills camera with some fancy video stuff. 2.7x crop, 10mm = 27mm equiv etc
Oh okay, makes sense. I thought that the video thing meant that it would pretty much be a video camera. It looks like an F mount, which makes me curious as to what kind of lenses they'd put on it because it looks really tiny right now. It looks like a cheap toy though, like a 90's cheap-o film camera. But I'm down for any competition in the EVIL camera market

You might want to look at the 24-70 2.8 if you haven't already. I've used the 24-105 and it's image stabilizing is nice (especially for video), along with the extra reach - but you might find yourself wishing you could bring in a little more light. If you do go with the 5D2 and kit, look into a fast 50 if you don't have one already - I recommend the 1.4, but the 1.8 will suffice (you should have one anyway, it's so cheap!) and the 1.2L is only something to consider if you have the need/dosh.

I have looked into the 24-70 2.8, but I find I'd be better off with extra reach when photographing at event as to keep to the back and not stick out as much, that why I am going to save up for the 70-200mm 2.8 L lens, then I feel fully covered :)
