All 50mm lenses rock. I don't think any company makes a bad one. If you are going to buy Canon, their 50mm f1.8 is great, nice and cheap, nothing wrong with it except it's plastic, and has a plastic mount. Still worth it because it's only $100. If you are going Nikon, the 50mm f1.4 is quite a bit sharper than the f1.8 counterpart. If you have a bit of cash to spend and think photography is something you are going to love, I would recommend the f1.4. If you are going with Sony (the DSLRs, not the Nex models) then I would say to look on ebay for an AF Konica Minolta 50mm f1.7. You'll get a tiny bit more light, but really the sharpness is either equal to the Sony counterpart or better, and literally is HALF the price. I've heard a lot of people recommend it over the Sony. But really any and all 50mm prime lenses are great. They are pretty much the easiest lenses to construct, and you are going to get awesome sharpness and bokeh from any of the lens manufacturers.
these are shots I did with my 1000D/XS (regional variation lol) first two are 50 1.8 and last is 18-55 edited photos final (155 of 263) by codenamecueball, on Flickr edited photos final (159 of 263) by codenamecueball, on Flickr clarky by codenamecueball, on Flickr
Anyone got any opinions on the Nikon D-3100? Looking to make the "jump" from compact to D-SLR, i can get that w/ kit lens for $830.
Is the D3000 really as bad as everyone says it is?
Is the D3000 really as bad as everyone says it is?
From what i've read it's not bad but it's the fact that the D3100 is superior in every way and just a tiny bit more expensive that makes it "bad" also 10 mp ccd
I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything the last few pages talking about it. I've been looking to buy either a Nikon D5100 or the Canon EOS Rebel T3i. Which one do you guys prefer? I've read that the Canon has better video capabilities, such as being able to manually set settings. edit: Also does anyone know a good decently priced slider?
t3i is beast oh in other news, some friends are buying small HD action cams and a £100 helicopter for making videos with :v:

Can someone convince me to get the Canon EF 100mm macro over the L version, despite how lovely the L version looks and that it has IS.
you need money to buy food and other accessories

The D5100 shares the same sensor as the D7000, so its friggin brilliant

Didn't see the inbuilt focus motor, so that would be a plus for him. For video specifically that's not too much use to him. Best thing to do Kirby is try em both out in store, how the camera feels in the hand is mighty important.
just looked this up

The size and weight isn't a big deal for me, but making statements such as "Significantly lower noise at high ISO" make me worried about the Canon.
Someone point me in the direction of their recommended DSLR. All I have at the moment is one of those 14mp Drop/Waterproof Lumix's. :v:

1100D hehe no thanks [editline]14th October 2011[/editline] 550D MASTER RACE
Is the 600D equivalent the D5100?
Is the 600D equivalent the D5100?
Ish, the 600D is better for video though.
the only bad thing about the D5100s video is lack of 60fps recording which you might want for slow mowing stuff Picture quality is better than the t3i I'd say
in what way
in what way
snapsort http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-T3i-vs-Nikon-D5100

and now we move to signal processors
the only bad thing about the D5100s video is lack of 60fps recording which you might want for slow mowing stuff
Also note that even though the auto focus on the fly is nice for casual shooting, it's a negative feature when you want to manually set your settings. edit: I believe the D5100 can do 60fps at 720p, correct?
nope
snapsort http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-T3i-vs-Nikon-D5100
D5100 also got 80 on DxO Mark, 600D got 65. The only thing the 600D has going for it is 720p/60 video. The biggest use of DSLRs are photos though :v:
What should I get? D3000 or a D60? From what I've seen the they're pretty much the same.
D60 is a year older than the D3000, so if they're both pretty much the same then the D60 will be cheaper.
