I have been thinking about getting a new camera to replace my 1000D, which can record video, has a better build and is a step up.
I am considering buying a body 550D or 60D, and selling my 1000D to a friend. What do you think, and do you have any other suggestions?
Save for a used 5D Mk II instead.
considering buying this, costs around 350 dollars (L-X3)

Lumix are nice little cameras. Leica glass, easy to use features compact, decent zoom range, and probably the best in class iso sharpness. I'd go for it totally. Are you going for just a compact, or a compact superzoom?
I'm just looking for a compact, I'm probably going to get this unless somebody gives me a better option.

or would the 600D be a better choice, I mean, the manual audio levels is a big bonus

Looked around there and I saw this

I'm going to need to save up and wait for this to release instead.
fujifilm makes nice compact cameras, i'd say that is a great bet.
I've always thought that the next laptop I'd own would be a mac. They're nice computers - from what I've used. I also think that in terms of experience (I don't know them too well) I think being able to use both would be a good skill to have for possible employment later on.
They have great battery life as well - which every laptop owner I've ever met (including myself) has watched their batteries dwindle away after about a year to the point where they just become desktops.
Nice keyboards to type on in my opinion too - with fast responsive keys. Which is nice considering I've got my 11,000 word dissertation first draft due in before Christmas.
So, I'm sure to the dismay of pc fanboys, my mother's given me a loan (and no christmas and birthday presents for me for the next 2 years) and has bought me a macbook pro 15" which is sweet.
Luckily, and by pure chance, she and my youngest brother are going to New York next week and she's ordered one from the states - to a saving of over £600!
So, I guess thanks to those that offered me advice and pointed me in the right directions. Consider my questions answered and you can all now get back to talking about delicious cameras.
Cheers.
I don't really understand what you mean. It's too late now anyway :)
Will I have a problem if I bought a camera like this like massive import tax?

I don't know about the UK. But in Canada, if I bought that. Taxes out the anus. So much tax.

Basically they've given the MBPs a spec bump so they're faster, if it's still possible cancel the order or take the un-opened MBP in to a store and see if they'll exchange it.

Add at least £300 to that due to customs.
£300!
fuck off!
Nowhere near £300
DSLRs are Duty Free but you still have to pay VAT at 20% which in this case would be £115.60 plus a "Clearance fee" that the courier slap on which is usually around £10
Final price will be just over £700
D5100 is on the way. Decided against the 550d.
Thanks Daijitsu, you really did help a beginner out! :)

My flatmate is deciding between a D5100 and a 550D for a first DSLR with a focus (not heavy) on video, he likes the sound of the D5100 but will take him to Jessops so he gets a handle of both and then can decide.
From what I understand, Canon has a better codec for video, but what else makes it better for video?
pentax has been offering a hefty discount on the gold standard pentax k-5 for a while now...
msrp was 1600 and it's selling for 1200. p. cheap for great cam for anyone in the market
Alright, I'm gonna save up, and buy the 650D when / if it comes out
Rumors are that it will have auto focus when recording video, and I think I read somewhere it won't have a 4GB file limit, and then a 30 minute limit instead (because of that EU crap)
The 600D was just released so it should take around two years to complete its lifespan as a product. Considering how much you can save up in that time it would seem silly to wait that long to buy an entry level camera...

Don't depend on that being a selling point because you'll just be disappointed. Make do with the limits, unless you need to an extended sequence you should be fine with it.
Oh there's also that: Until cameras are able to have a direct link to your brain, manual focusing will be always the best option for serious video on DSLRs. Not worth waiting two years for that.
Yeah, I was mostly thinking about manually focusing when I use it myself, but if a noob friend needed to film something, I think auto focus would be a good option. But we will see.
How long did it take from the 550D to the 600D? How likely is it that they will release a 650D in february or whatever?
Don't buy a camera based on how user friendly it is for your friends. The camera is for you.
Yeah I know, it was also only a very minor point. However, I will still wait and see what the 650D will bring to the table. If it's not that big of an upgrade over the 600D, it would still have been worth waiting, as the 600D will have dropped in price by then.
Does 1000€ sound reasonable for a D7000 + 16gb memory card + bag + extra battery
(Just the D7000 alone costs about 960€, so I'd get those three items for 40€)
I'd have all in all 20gb storage in my camera if I got that 16gb one.

My camera has autofocus for video, and it can be a nice feature sometimes, but you will never get smooth transitions like you would with a manual focus.
So, I've been using a Casio EX-F1 for about 2 years now.
The main focus of this camera is speed; you can film in high speed at up to 1200 frames per second, you can take 60 full resolution still images in one second, and the shutter is incredibly fast at down to 1/40 000 of a second.
While it is a good camera, it does have its limitiations when it comes to general photography.
The images get very noisy if I put the ISO above 400, and the resolution of the images is very limited (6 megapixels). Oh, and the lens isn't changeable either, so I'm a bit limited there.
I'm going to a school now that teaches in photograpy, and soon I'll be in posession of quite a lot of money.
So I was thinking about this. Photography is something I care about a lot, and I want to expand on it.
I want to take a jump from my EX-F1 to something quite a bit more high-end.
I was thinking about a Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
Is that too crazy?
I was wondering if someone could help me find a decent DSLR that you can get M42 adapter. The main thing is I would like the camera to feel well made, more metal (like a Zenit) and I don't have much money I will say about £300.
