Im surprised you leave the colors on vivid. Every Sony camera that I have been able to use is set to vivid by default and it makes the colors absolutely horrendous. This could be because of the lighting in my store, but I always find myself turning it off.
it's mostly vivid clashing with sony lenses. with canon lenses on it, the colors are phenomenal. also they look lovely with minolta glass as well. but with the sony lenses i don't like the vivid as much, but i really enjoy the pop color filter setting and the settings i posted match it exactly, so it makes for some nice poppy colors without having to edit.
What do you guys feel needs improved, or just downright hate about the NEX cameras?
my biggest gripe is the sensor being exposed when changing lenses. it seems like some sort of plastic could extend itself over the sensor and keep dust out when the camera is off, but nothing like that exists in any of these cameras. you'll probably end up cleaning the sensor often, i've scrubbed mine hardcore at least 5 times. the screen protector on the nex 3 and 5 models is also awful, mine is badly deteriorated and i know it would cost a lot to repair. And maybe balancing could be a bit better with some of the heavier lenses, but there's never a time where i wish i had purchased a nikon or a canon. Biggest thing most people mention though is lack of E mount glass. Totally a legitimate complaint, but i can't afford any lenses for it anyways so i only adapt glass. I'd absolutely love some more pancakes for it though like 4/3rds have, there's no reason we shouldn't have a tiny 30mm f2 lens or something.
I really hate the 1.6 crop factor on my 550D. I really want a 5DMKII but it's just way too much. At the moment I have the two kit lenses, and the 50mm 1.8. It's only really good for portraits though, since with the crop factor it's about 80mm. I want a general purpose lens I guess that's good quality. I was thinking the Canon EF 17-40mm f4L or the EF 24-105mm f/4L. They are quite expensive though.
my sister is trying to GO PRO on her youtubes channel thing and is researching about what cameras to get. she already is a youtube partner and wants to step up her video quality with higher quality video and better optics than a point and shoot. youtube vlog style video is primary and closeup makeup macro is secondary a dslr is overkill because she doesn't really want to take pictures but if they are reasonably priced with high quality video then why not
After quite some thought, I think I'll give it 6 months and see what happens in regards to purchasing a NEX camera. If I go on an exchange year abroad (as far as Finland I would hope, else flights are mega dolla) it would suit me to have a smaller camera, but for the meantime I'll follow the Sony rumours blog and see how the franchise grows. Huge thanks to Cueball, Mysterio and of course Trogdon for your replies! I thought I should get rid of my speedlight I never use and maybe my Tamron zoom in favour of some primes. Specifically the Nikon AF-S 50mm 1.4G and Sigma 30 1.4 HSM. I could get the two brand new for £535.98 or £482.99 (£100 amazon voucher against the Nikon 50 is why its cheap) if I go with eBay for the Sigma used. However I'm concerned about the Sigma back focusing issues that I think Bhaz mentioned even though its a company seller on eBay (stafford cameras). 7 days to send it back to them so it should be okay. Its a spectacular lens for the price (£255ish not sure about Australia). Distortion is a correctable problem with software.
waiting it out is never a bad idea. the nex 7 will become more available and therefore the price will probably drop a bit, thinking of picking one up when they get around $1000, but honestly i think my nex 5k will last me for a while. for the price of $450 they are an absolute steal considering the DSLRs they rival.

Would it really be worth it? Or am I better off getting something with a wider focal range?

Would it really be worth it? Or am I better off getting something with a wider focal range?
Its hard to be creative with DOF with kit lenses, and the sharpness is an upgrade. Its an excellent replacement. I've found myself wanting an UWA too, but for a constant 2.8 aperture you are looking at £450 or so. Sigma and Tamron UWA have a better zoom range and good comparable sharpness for £300+, but none have a constant 2.8. I think you should try the lenses out if you get a chance. EDIT: Anyone have experience with Macro lenses? Looking at a Tokina 100 2.8 as a 30mm and 50mm prime are too close together in my opinion to warrant the cost, at least when I tried those focal lengths on my 17-50 zoom lens. Otherwise, a solid wide angle prime.
Is the D3100 a good buy? Apart from taking pictures, I want to use it to record video. I am also looking at the Rebel T3, even though it has 720p and no autofocus in movie mode. is the extra $100 for the Nikon worth it?
Autofocusing while recording on the d3100 is useless. If you want 1080 it's still better but you should try to find a Rebel T2i/550d.
I hope no one autofocuses while recording...
I hope no one autofocuses while recording...
i use the feature on my sony often, because it's fast and completely silent to contrast autofocus, and it's pretty darn accurate. doesn't hunt around much. the lens is 16mm so focus clearly isn't as important, but i've actually found the autofocus on my camera pretty useful

So happy, the D5100 arrived.
Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD OR Canon EF 17-40mm f4L USM I will be using this on my 550D, but I will upgrade to a full frame some time in the future. I will be using it as a general purpose lens, from landscapes, to anything, however I'll probably use my 50mm 1.8 II for portraits as it will have less distortion. I know it's a rather drastic price difference but, which one would be worth it. I can afford either.
Never used the 17-50f2.8, but I have used the 16-35mm f/2.8L before. All i can say, is that it's a wonderfull lens to use. Though it's a tad wasted since you don't have a Full Frame camera ex 16mm SO WIDE DoF at 35mm Both taken with a Canon 5D MKII Don't really have much photos with it, as all the photos I take are stored at the place I do photos at.
Never used the 17-50f2.8, but I have used the 16-35mm f/2.8L before
Thanks for the info, but I just realised I listed the wrong lens, I meant the "Canon EF 17-40mm f4L USM"
After Christmas I did some shopping around and after considering a few cameras I purchased the Nikon cool-pix p500 for about $314/$348 after tax. I'm still looking around for a better camera/deal. I was looking into micro 4/3 cameras and wondering if I would end up with a better camera for around the same price. I'm considering the Olympus PEN E-PL1 for $299 on Amazon. (Sorry if I made any mistakes grammar, etc... I'm really tired right now)
that would be a significant upgrade from the coolpix camera. another good mirrorless in that price range would be the nex 3, though it is a bit pricier.
Awesome was able to grab it from Amazon brand new for 279.99 (before taxes)
Well I've pretty much decided I'll get the 17-40mm f/4L. Even though I don't have a full frame right now, I'll be getting one in the near future. And it's reasonably wide, even on the x1.6 crop. the f/4 is horribly limiting [editline]13th January 2012[/editline] you're selling two very capable lenses esp that 55-250
17-40L is a great standard lens for 1.6x crop and on 1.3x crop and FF as ultra-wide. Great build quality and very contrasty and sharp optical qualities. I have one too and i can say from it that the lens is good lightweight L lens. F/4 isn't all that limiting, because if you use the lens for example landscapes, you wouldn't even use it wide-open. And when you are using f/4, it's just 1 stop from f/2.8, and the 550D has quite good noise performance, so he does not have the desperate need for a f/2.8 lens i would reckon (and for low-light stuff he always has the 50mm 1.8 handy). Also, it's a good lens if you are ever upgrading to fullframe, because the tampron isn't usable on fullframe sensors (as we all know ofcourse). If i would have to choose i would too have gone with the 17-40L because the lens has a very good buildquality, while it's not too bulky to have on your camera all the time, because the lens is also very lightweight (but not in a bad way). You can't go wrong with buying that lens imo.
Is the Lumix GF2 a good beginner's camera? It's extremely well priced on amazon and I may consider buying one.
yeah but he's going to use it for all kinds of things, it limits him to a 50mm or grain when indoors
It will be my general purpose lens, yes, but I can use my 50mm if I want to shoot in low light. Or if I'm shooting landscapes or still life, I'll just do a long exposure with a tripod. I've managed perfectly fine with my 50mm and the 18-55, but I just hate these kit lenses because I feel they limit me in their low quality. [editline]14th January 2012[/editline] Not the 50mm, I love it. For it's price, it can't be beat.
My girlfriend is really into photography. She just got a new Rebel EOS I believe. I want to get her a gift for her birthday which is in about a week, and I was thinking of a new case since she started using her old DSLR case, which is sort of barely held together as of right now. Any ideas for good cases/bags? Something along the quality of the Canon 200DG if possible? I might go for that bag if I can't find something of the same quality but cheaper. Much thanks!

Much thanks!
I wouldn't recommend a Canon 200DG. I bought it as my fist camera bag and I regret it. The bag is very bulky and not very well made. The little plastic latches on the front will start to not hold the lid of the bag closed if you use it enough or have enough weight in it. I used it for a vacation and all week my shoulder hurt because of the amount of stress that it puts on part of your shoulder. The only thing that I like about it is that it's water resistant(to a point) and that you can move the little inside Velcro sides around to fit what you need. I think members here would recommend a Lowepro bag of some sort.
The 200DG just looked so professional with the metal buckles and such, that's what attracted me, since I want to get her something nice camera-related for her birthday. Lowerpro just doesn't give that look to me I guess. Any other suggestions, or maybe a specific Lowerpro bag that you can think of that looks pro? [editline]14th January 2012[/editline] Okay I take that back. The Lowepro Adventura 170 bag seems very nice. Can I get an okay from someone that might know about it, or perhaps own one? I think I'll order this within 24 hours from now unless someone convinces me otherwise.
I've been thinking about selling my 1100D with the kit lens and a Canon 55-250 4,5-5,6 and buy a used Nikon D200, found one with battery grip and a sigma 18-50 2,8 lens for about the same price that i could get for My 1100D. My main reason to changing is that My aunts husband is using an Nikon, and he's got some pretty expensive lenses that i could borrow + i feel like the functions in the D200 outmatches having video and live view mode.. The Only thing I'm abit worried about is the ISO quality on the D200, but it shouldn't be Any problems, right? Anyways, is there anything you think i would miss on the 1100D that the D200 doesn't have, and do you think it is a good change?
