Afaik Firefly was doomed because of executive meddling by Fox tho. Forced changes to the script and editing that didn't fit with the rest, airing episodes out of order, some terrible deadlines, little to no promotion on debut, and of course the mess was placed in the [url="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FridayNightDeathSlot"]Friday Night Death Slot.[/url] TV Tropes has quite a bit on the reasons behind it, and why it was done in the first place, but I'm sure there's more to find if you dig deeper into the fandom.

The actual writing, especially the dialogue (and trope subversions), was pretty damn good imo.
