I lived out in the country, you can't just rent property there. We bought a house, lived there for three years. the housing crash happened, and suddenly we were far in debt. Had to let the bank retake the house because the value went to shit, so we couldn't sell it, and the payments increased beyond what we could pay.
We had to move down to the southern part of the state so we could find some place to rent and my mother could finish the last semester of her degree. We needed a new vehicle so that I could go to school and find a job, and my mother could work and finish her schooling, another large debt we haven't paid off. Plus student loans- even with scholarships and federal aid, we're both in debt for that now, too.
I know this is the similar case for most people I know personally who are in severe debt. It's not because of fancy stuff, it's because the market is shit and the recession fucked everyone over. For someone in the lower middle class as is, we took a huge hit. My extended family who were the lowest of the middle class are now lower class, barely living at all, surviving off ramen and cereal. It's not like people are overspending on useless shit- in fact, I only know two people who have done that, personally, as opposed to the at least 30 who are in the "in debt to survive" boat with me.
When someone says that Americans' problems are because of spending on useless shit, I just want to punch them. That's severely oversimplifying issues and ignoring the truth based on misconceptions and stereotypes. We don't own expensive cars, and our house was very, very modest. We have trouble making the rent even now. We don't have expensive crap- the most expensive household thing we have is probably this computer, at 800$.
I know for a fact that many people aren't in debt for that reason. Maybe it's not that way in the city, or more populous states, but here in the Midwest, in the middle class, in the rural areas, people are in trouble because we got fucked. NOT because we over spend.

Very few from my experience. I know this is also the case in rural New Mexico, having family that lived there for 2 years before moving back here and a friend that moved down there last year. I doubt that the majority are in this situation because of overspending on stupid shit. Even before the recession, most people didn't have the money to do that. Since the recession, people have been crunched into the lower and lower-middle class more than ever before, since the depression. Somehow I doubt that most people are in debt suddenly in massive amounts because they all decided to spend huge amounts on stupid shit all at the same time as the recession.

That's another thing, actually. I did have life-saving medical procedures. Systemic MRSA+compromised immune system+severe scabies infestation+allergies to the cheaper drugs that would treat those. If my mother didn't have the superb state health care for being an employee of the County, then we wouldn't have been able to afford that and either we'd be in even more debt, or I'd be dead.
