What Gregah said, also, welcome back. :v:
Uh, thanks but I never left ;p
What gregah said but you said it was going to be real time. So skipping the points to make your guy move if your still making it real time.
I think it's going to be a lot harder to script it real time, besides you declare and stuff in regular PW so an actionpoint-based system is probalby pretty close to how you play it here, right? :)
You were gone for a long time. :v:

One small typo and Joost shows up. :sigh:

Hey, I've been thinking about favoring customization over competition in the sense that I'm willing to forgo constraints in order to make the game more dynamic. There's always the option to create strict rules which I will leave up to its user base. But before I get into that, let me address some individuals:
I dont support this idea Reason why? Well, i think that if its succesful, it would attract loads and, well, itd be different from here because everyone knows each other, whereas if theres a game like this, it would kinda be, a game, and thats it.
I understand where your coming from. A small community is a lot easier to keep track of and you gain a sense of familiarity as well as your place in the community. That doesn't have to change either, this forum section is what binds you guys and that won't change. If you want to host matches or just host facepunch servers with a specific password that'd be perfectly possible. This game will hopefully attract like minded people; people you will want to get to know and meet. Artist people like yourselves.
Actually I kind of like the annonymity of it. You could always have a friends system to play with people on this forum - but when I'm bored and nobodies up for a match, I'd much rather play with a random person with a fresh and new army I haven't seen before.
A good point, this would only serve as a device to enhance and enlarge the community. Not submerge it in obscurity or completely change it.
if you get this up im refusing to play
Haha, well I'd hope you'd at least try it.
:) I can help with the interface art and style. But not scripting and that tech stuff. *HUD pic* Simple concept, I can do way better but this is the basic of how I through of it.
Ah cool. Its good to see some brainstorming, if anything I say keep the concepts coming, coding is only half the battle, design and structure is the other.
A tip to the OP ; Keep it simple, give the units "action points" that can be used to move and shoot. I.E the units have each 10 APs, one 1 AP lets him move a certain amount of pixels, and shooting costs 5 AP or something like that. Make a template for the units. The template should have ; Moving Pose Standing Pose Running Pose Aiming Pose Shooting Pose Crouching Pose Prone Pose Hurt Pose Dead Pose Other poses can be added once you've done the basics. I think a game system much like the Fallout series (1 & 2, except 2d) will be the best system for this type of game.
Again, I love to see brainstorming especially when its well thought out. The more brainstorming the better; the more we take into consideration the more flexible it can be. Also, I will address your suggestion in a moment as it ties in with what I wanted to say.
I think it's going to be a lot harder to script it real time, besides you declare and stuff in regular PW so an actionpoint-based system is probalby pretty close to how you play it here, right? :)
Real time is definitely harder and that's why I like it. Real time also keeps you on your feet and provides a constant sense of motivation. I think real time also allows for more creative freedom. Alright as for what I wanted to say. I took into consideration what some of you have said about wanting your armies to be very customizable. By this I mean customizable not only in appearance and effect but customizable in function as well. Now this is possible but it does require you to learn something new. If I am to allow dynamic freedom of action we'll have to include basic scripting for actions and behavior. Don't get anxiety over having to learn a bit with this, trust me, you are all competent and intelligent people and this stuff is below you compared to what you already know. I will make it as beginner friendly as possible, trust me it'll be a cake walk. It will still allow you to implment a lot of custom behaviour. Now I'm sure you may think "What's to stop someone from scripting an atomic bomb that asplodes the map?". First, asplode is not a word, second I've decided to implement a design tactic that the game SecondLife implements to keep people from doing these sorts of things. If you've never played SecondLife, it has a built in scripting system that lets people make their own stuff, but making things happen costs energy. Just like if I were to push a ball of a certain weight, I would need a certain amount of energy to push the ball. Likewise units, projectiles, and so on will have energy based on confounding conditions which I will develop further later. The gist is, if you want projectile_rpg to explode_on_contact, the radius and intensity of the explosion will be a percentage of energy. The script writer (yeah there'll be a script writer) will tell you how much energy a function takes up. The script writer I'm debating to either be iconic programing (very simple, I learned it when I was 9, you may have learned it if you take engineering courses in school) or text programming (can be simple if done correctly, requires more program aided development though). I urge you to google iconic programming and tell me what you think on this. Again this is as simple as learning how to draw a circle in paint, its not real programming.
Although this sounds good, I don't think I will play it. I prefer the old PW. You can just edit everything to your likings, plus it has good physics ( that is , if you know gravity).
It's not meant to be a replacement, it's meant to be a standalone game. You can still play here, but when you're feeling like you want something quicker and more exciting, you can have a match on this game. If this ever becomes a reality, I will probably be playing it non-stop. :v: (I'll still play here of course, just less often.)
Frankly i like the idea, but your taking away the values of pixel wars. What i mean is, everyone knows eachother so its easier to communicate on these forums, whereas if you succeed in this, you will attract lots of people, it will make it hard to communicate with one another

I like your way of thinking Kommrad
I like your way of thinking Kommrad
Great mind(s) must think alike. Right?
Indeed my evil friend, indeed
I would like to join in on this ruling of the world too.
I would like to join in on this ruling of the world too.
Well, I suppose... As long as you sign this piece of paper with your blood! AHAHAHAHAHAHA
O K! *Icebrigade slits his rist and signs the paper with his blood* IT IS CONCRETE!!!!!

I don't even need to watch the video to know what that is :smug: Anywho, any progress on the game?
I don't even need to watch the video to know what that is :smug: Anywho, any progress on the game?
The Rock off between the devil and Tenacious D?
Yep, my fav song by Tenacious D is either Karate, Kielbasa or Beelzeboss :D
Yep, my fav song by Tenacious D is either Karate, Kielbasa or Beelzeboss :D
AWESOME! Kewl!
I understand where the PW forumers are coming from when they say people go off topic about random things. Can you keep it out of the thread please?
Oh crap, just noticed what thread we we're talking in. Anyway, we need signs of progress! (As I said earlier :D) Of course, when XCV is online :P
Yeah, but off topic, what is that movie?
.....You, good sir, are a fucking douche! No offence meant :P You can watch it on youtube in parts, it's called Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny
Well rawr, I just wanted to know. Back on topic.
You guys doesn't understand that he wants to make an rts out of pw? Not turn based?
all of us understand that. gregah just thought that at first (I assume) and Reece went with him. I think he did.
Just to give you guys an idea of what iconic programming looks like here's a small concept to consider. (This doesn't really reflect my design intentions, just off the top) Hope that doesn't go to far over your head. This will allow for custom actions while still keeping balance with "energy" provided I get everything in check. The name of that script would be Ability 01 for the Squid unit and it can be called through an event like a keypress or it could just show up as an icon on your HUD when you select that unit. For example, the acid ball object that is created could have an on_contact event script that you program to make the floor sticky by having it explode with an area effect. What say you on this, does this suit well?
That looks good. concept is good. I would suggest making the energy a great amount, that way they can't code nukes, but they are able to fire more than one rpg at once. Like in PW. Or you could jusst have the person be flagged if they have a code for a "nuclear device" The graphics could be better too even though thats just a concept
