Easier than anything else. Just start the program and do something. It turns out looking terrible/good anyways. @nosefinger.
Use the high poly model and the low poly model to "bake" a normal map.

Looks good for a start. My advice is to know approximately what you're going to make, then just try out several shapes.
Anyone got any tips on simplifying the models? Perhaps a free modeller which has a good simplify mesh function? The simplify brush is way too buggy, I just want to have meshes with say 10k polys max for use in my games.
Is it possible to export the stuff you make to 3DS Max?
AFAIK, yes.
Export as an .obj file, then import/open that in 3DS Max. It's how I got the nipple stalk ball into POV-Ray (via PoseRay).
