I personally find the 50mm lovely for portraits on a crop. So (approx 1.5) 75mm equivalent. And yeah a 35mm is great for all-around use as that is somewhat around 50mm, which is the standard. I say 35mm, cause only non-canon brands make 30mm iirc. For even more general use people love the 24-70mm but I think going for a prime lens for the first lens a wise choice. More speed, quality and trains you to move around and not zoom in and out for composition. That is if you're going for the creative photography.
I find a 50mm to be almost impossible to use with my Nikon in medium sized rooms, if I get a prime it'll be a 35mm for sure
For Nikon/Sony, your crop is 1.5x This means you take the focal length, divide it in half, then add that number to the original focal length and you get your equivalent. For Canon you have 1.6x You take the focal length, divide it in half, and then take 1/10th the original number, and add those 3 numbers together (so 50mm +25mm +5mm). This makes for easy calculations without a calculator. Alternatively just remember some prime equivalents Sony/Nikon you have 16, 24, 35, and 55 that equal your 24, 35, 50, and 85 approx. Canon will be similar, but more exact would be 15, 20, 30, and 50. Sorry if this is poorly worded or needs clarity
Random Question. Would a Softbox or Umbrella be better for portraits? Most of the time I'd be doing 1-5 people, but I do school events so thats about 20-30 people plus small groups.
Got my camera today! Not a DSLR, but still the best one that I've ever had. Took a picture of the most interesting thing in my room before the battery died. This was zoomed in from about 10 feet away [t]http://puu.sh/sLEA[/t]
Got my 9xi today Broken out of the box, does not load film properly. Nice
Woo RAW
After like 3 hours I fixed it, something was wrong with the rewinder, but I put tape over it and took it off and it unjammed it or something but I got it working ahh yes
And has anyone used a Gordy wrist/neck strap? I'm definitely grabbing one of these with the pads, they look fantastic: http://www.electricedge.com/gordy_s_straps/wrist-lug/index.htm
They look pretty slick indeed. I'm thinking of getting a blackrapid shoulder strap for mine. Hate the neck strap.
i have decided the controls on the 9xi are awesome it has a Panic button which you push to reset everything to user-definable parameters, which is really nice. But the program auto mode, omg best thing ever. when you move the front dial while in P, it instantly changes to shutter priority. when you change the back dial, changes instantly to Aperture priority why do more cameras not do this, it makes so much sense
They look pretty slick indeed. I'm thinking of getting a blackrapid shoulder strap for mine. Hate the neck strap.
I got the dark brown leather wrist strap with black padding, love hand straps, almost always better than a neck strap in most situations. Although I ordered from an EU seller who makes them and not Gordy, very similar though:
i've got a similar canon to that, canonet ql17, it has g-iii ql on the front badge rather than just ql not sure if it's any good though
Quick question, if something says "28-112mm, 35mm equivalent" what does that mean exactly, the equivalent part, does it mean 28mm on that specific camera + lense combination is equivalent to a 35mm lense on a full frame camera?
Close but not quite, it's saying that its going to look like 28-112mm on a 35mm camera/sensor (what fullframe refers too)
Oh I see, so the equivalent is referring to what the lense ranges from on a 35mm standard camera? All this lense nonsense is confusing.
Yep, that would be exactly what you said
So anyway, next week I'll be ordering my refurbished 600D. Yay. But just to clarify, I can trust to order from here, right? http://viewitem.eim.ebay.dk/CANON-EOS-REBEL-T3i--600D-18MP-DSLR-CAMERA-1855mm-KITT3I600-D/300646378620/item Also, Magic Lantern looks freaking awesome.
Just bought an Agfa Isolette 1 on a whim at a yard sale for 40 kr (Slightly less than 6 dollars). I have no idea how to use it! I'm going to use it as a prop for filmmaking but I'm pretty sure it's functional
Is anyone here interested in buying vintage cameras? I bought a box load the other day, including a Zeiss Ikon with 2 Lenses (in remarkably good condition!), aswell as a Beirette in lovely condition. Most come with a carry bag or the original cases. PM me for more detail :)

You have your shutter speed ring, the one with a little arrow pointing to the 25 in that picture, and the shutter cocking lever is the nub sticking out next to it. The lens is rotated for focus, and the aperture is in the same place as the cocking lever, just closer to the bellows. Lever with a red dot I believe is a self timer.
I wish I lived in a city that had shops that sold old shit like cameras Or that I had retired photog relatives I should have bought that Polaroid camera last year, it was like $25 in sealed box condition.
My 9xi jammed again while taking prom pictures with it, is it possible to wind the film in the dark, but not all the way, and then move the film into my working canon body and take the first couple exposures with the cap on and set to like f22 1/1000 and keep using the film? So ht the ones I took don't get washed out and I don't waste the roll Not worried about the body, they said they'd replace it for free.
I guess if you know how much pictures you took before it shouldn't be a problem though I have never tried such a thing.
Yeah I took 6, so I just make sure the first 6 are completely dark. I've never tried it either but it sounds feasible so I thought i would inquire
It is like a double exposure but the first exposure is 100% and the second 0% exposed.
Okay that's what I figured, thanks :)

Does a broken battery door on an AE-1 cause any other problems, aside from it being easy to knock the battery out? Tempted to start a roll while I'm waiting for the replacement door to arrive.
Should be fine just tape it up
