Gear discussion thread v. "I own more nifty fifties than cameras they fit"

Im finding limitations with my D5100, like lack of autofocus on the body and viewfinder that is a little small. I also have big man hands, and the grip while large is still kinda too small.
Considering the D7000, has the autofocus motor, larger viewfinder and bigger overall size and grip. Also has the handy LCD on top for settings. Oh, and weather sealed.
I just dont know if it's worth it, because the image quality is exactly the same.

I went from a D3000 to a D7000. The viewfinder and much better build was worth it alone, but I also got better IQ and video. Since Nikon replaced the D3100 this year, I'm willing to bet a D7000 replacement isn't far off.
make it the first 7 just in case, since different camera bodies have slightly different distances between the shutter curtains and the takeup spool
i did that, thanks :)
also now the motor isn't stuck in the 9xi :|
wtf is wrong with this camera. the left rewinder part gets jammed every now and then, but then decides to unjam itself sometimes? it's like it locks the position and won't rotate clockwise (necessary to advance the frame), but then now after leaving it alone for the night it's fine? too temperamental for me to understand :/

Yeh I'd wait a little bit, if you end up liking the eventual replacement you can buy that otherwise you will pay less for the D7000.
okay sorry to always have dilemmas regarding film cameras, but i need some advice with this one
so apparently now that i'm not throwing a fit about my 9xi, i need to send the camera AND lens back for a refund (previously offered to just ship a new body and let me keep the old one), so i'm thinking about doing this because what's the point of dealing with the hassle with what is supposed to be a flagship camera.
however, i just bought a minolta 50mm 1.7 from goodwill in mint condition for $35, which is the same lens that came with the camera i bought on ebay. Only problem is, the goodwill one is the old version, the ebay one is the new version. Not a lot of difference between the two besides various cosmetic things (rubber ring on newer one, 1/4th less pull, locking built in hood), optically they are the same. but if i were to choose one or the other i'd definitely want the ebay one, because i paid for it and i like to manual focus, so i'd prefer that lens.
so i'm thinking about sending the goodwill one back with the camera, and then just buying a 9xi cheaper from someone else on ebay. i bought the 9xi with 50mm for $140 from this seller, this 50mm plus a different 9xi will be around $90 total, so a bit difference. question is, do you think they would notice if i sent them this lens instead of the other one? or should i just learn to deal with the cosmetic difference
Just ordered my 600D, here's hoping it'll arrive friday so I can play with it in the weekend! :allears:

You bet he will notice, I don't think it's worth the trouble.
I'd try to ask if you can send back the camera only for a partial refund if anything, otherwise just send everything as it was.
I'd think nikon would hold off a little longer on a 7000 replacement, it was intended to be a bit beefier and long lasting. If you're looking to compare a 3k-3100 replacement to the 7k, Just look at how long the D90 remained a huge standard in its range compared to the D40
also sorry for my rather huge absence as of late, I've been without a job nor vehicle to really get anywhere of interest since february and focusing on illustration work to pay the bills. It's retarded but somehow I'm managing whilst I look for bigger and better things, I'm happy I was in the positive by 46 whole cents after paying rent this month, haha
also my bike decided to shank itself from the inside, a spoke managed to somehow puncture the wheel frame and permanently pops my rear wheel now. Coupled with a sometimes jiggly front column, slightly bent front wheel (due to being hit gently by a car), some gears it won't shift into (sometimes causing the chain to come loose), I THINK it's time for an upgrade
hopefully I'll be more lucky with commissions and oddjobs by the end of next month, or better yet actually land a regular job.
My 9xi jammed again while taking prom pictures with it, is it possible to wind the film in the dark, but not all the way, and then move the film into my working canon body and take the first couple exposures with the cap on and set to like f22 1/1000 and keep using the film? So ht the ones I took don't get washed out and I don't waste the roll
Not worried about the body, they said they'd replace it for free.
I do this all the time, its very helpful as my cameras have a tendancy to break in bad situations. Like just putting a new roll of film in.
Hey frag, what's a good price for a canon FD 17mm f4? I'm trying to buy that and a canon FD 50mm macro with the extension tube, is $200 for both decent?

I've bought a Canon FD 17mm f4 for myself last week for 160 euros. It's a quite scarce (one of the rarer lenses in the FD lineup) lens with very good optical performance. And the 50mm macro with extension tube is also nice to have. The 50mm macro is said to be the sharpest 50mm in the Canon FD lineup. Only the 17mm is easily worth 300 dollars so 200 for a 17mm and a 50mm macro with the extension tube is a steal. If it's a auction though i would set the maximum bid a bit higher than 200 dollars.
It's just a guy on Craigslist, he's selling a huge outfit but no one has made offers in over a month so I'm good. Thanks :)
Does he have a FD 200mm f/2.8 perhaps?
Still looking for that lens :)
Nah :/Here's the listing, let me know if you want anything! I scored the 17, 50 macro, a macro extender and an official canon 2x tele for $225, not bad!

225 is a awesome price.
Well, as i now have looked through the listing, can you ask him how much he wants for the color filters for BW photography and ND filters if he has them, and what sizes are the filters?
The lenses and the camera's aren't particulary interesting for me. There are just a few lenses left i would like to have someday.
he said he won't part with any other parts of the kit, he wants to keep it as complete as possible so he can sell the rest. but if i come across any other good deals i'll let you know!
I just got my Olympus XA which a bought recently. It works, but it only works in the 12 second timer delay, eventhough it isn't switched to this mode.
This sucks
Try to think to pick the Instagram App icon and try to make a real camera…
This is the main idea at the base of Instagram Socialmatic Project.
Since Facebook has bought Instagram for nearly a billion dollars in cash and stock, many users, bloggers, economy experts have thought Instagram could build its first real photo camera.
So, that’s is!
Socialmatic is the first Instagram photo camera, with a lot of amazing features:
- 16 GB mass storage;
- Wifi and Bluetooth;
- 4:3 touchscreen;
- 2 main lens, first for main capture, second for 3D filters, webcam applications and QR Code capturing;
- Optical zoom;
- Led Flash;
- Internal printer to make your Instagram photos real;
- Paper cartridge with Instagram Paper Sheets;
- Dedicated 4 colors ink tanks;
- InstaOs 1.0, which put together Facebook and Instagram App feature;
Take your shoot with Instagram Socialmatic, make your photo cool as you want and share it directly on Facebook trough the powerful InstaOs.
If you want, you can print it directly on Instagram Paper Sheets, thanks to the internal printer.
Every Instagram printed photo reports on front side your Instagram nickname and a QR code, to be followed by another Instagrammer, simply pointing his/her Socialmatic on your printed QR Code.
This because Instagram Paper Sheets has a retro side with a glue strip, just like a post-it.
You can share in the real world your photo, printing your emotions and sensations.
And if you want, on the bottom of front side of your printed photo, you’ve a dedicated space to write something, just like to comment a photo on Facebook, but in the real world…Do you remember the old Polaroid photos?
Instagram Socialmatic is only a concept…
But, maybe, it could became real…
So, completely ignoring the fact that it's like designing an ornate hammer to pound the same old iron nails... As well-machined as they make it look with all of their product shots, I'm not quite sure they understand the size and location of any of the internals
at all
Can I kickstart negative money to them
Olympus epl1. They go for like $220 on amazon. Or the Olympus zx-1

This guy seriously thinks facebook is just going to sit there and wait while he takes their logo, prints it on a camera and sells it?
Maybe he just enjoys the burning sensation of lawsuits up his anus.
Has anyone ever had any experience with the Minolta XE-7 or recommend another camera for me in the Minolta lineup that's not newer than the X-700?
i would recommend the x-700 if you are looking in their manual camera lineup (not alpha range like you said). there's no real camera they made that's better, and the x-700 is cheap enough to not even consider other options.
also i think i'm going to sell my 17mm canon fd. my 24mm is wide enough, and 2 stops faster.
