I think I understand, f-stop is changed in ratio with the focal length to retain the same DOF as you zoom in/out? Does this mean the amount of light the sensor is exposed to is the same if the focal length is changed in the same lens?
well it's not really a retained DoF, it's more of just a lens design, not entirely desirable at that. and the sensor is exposed to less light as the length of the lens increases. if it is a constant aperture zoom, it will remain the same.
the ratio is the lens length (mm) to the diameter of the aperture, not the lens element(s). For instance a 50mm 1.8 would have a max diameter of almost 28mm wide, but at f/5.6 it'd be just short of 9mm. This is the reason that the higher numbers in aperture equate to smaller diameters.
Got my Fujifilm X10 back from from it's second repair (two repairs within a month after purchase) with its second lens replacement and low and behold, the cameras zoom ring is still broken, it feels and sounds like I'm grinding glass. This time I've made a video to show the issue rather than explain it, hopefully it helps, third time lucky?
I posted it in a more appropriate place and was told it definitely was not normal.
I picked up a Canon Rebel XS and transfered my lenses from my old EOS 650 over to it. Currently, Im using either a 35-70mm or my 50mm lense. Is this a decent setup for a beginner? Im getting a 24-105mm from a co-worker tomorrow for free.
Those lenses are nice, just not on wide angle. And do you mean the 24-105 f4? If so holy shit good friend
I'm looking for good Minolta lens to EOS adapter. (Going on a T2i) I'd like infinity focus capabilities, and I'm also looking for decent build quality. Anyone have one they can comment on? If you're curious I have a Tokina 28-85mm 3.5 lens and a Rokkor 50mm 1.4 lens to play around with.
Just ordered a 30mm 1.4 for my Pentax K-x In time for electric daisy carnival...cant' wait.

I'd say it's not worth the money to buy a adapter to use them on a eos body. [editline]27th May 2012[/editline] Well i finally got my FD to NEX adapter. Also took some pictures of all my lenses on the adapter to make some size comparisons. Oh yeah, I also got my M39 to NEX adapter, but the thing broke the same evening I got it... Still looking for a hex key to tighten these nuts again so the damn thing won't come apart again.
Can someone explain to me what an EF-S lens is?
Can someone explain to me what an EF-S lens is?
designed for 1.6x crop sensored cameras, like the eos XX00D, XX0D, X0D (not 10D) series. The rear element is further into the camera, thus it won't mount on a full frame/1.3x crop body. It is also smaller, for the smaller sensor.
What is a good prime lense (EF/EF-S Mount) for street photography? Price should sit around 300 >
300 euro/dollars/rubbles/apples?
Canadian Dollars.. Sorry, forgot to mention currency
I looked around on henry's online store (what a pain in the ass to navigate that site), and what i've found there that there's not so much choose from with that price. Lenses i've found(price=henrys.com price): Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (obvious choice, but can be found somewhat too much tele on cropsensors), price = 139,99 CAD Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 (old lens with AFD focusmotor, but still fast enough focus though, translates to about 45mm fullframe, decent performer and very compact like the 50mm 1.8, also good to find second hand for very little money) price = 339,99 CAD (but a lot cheaper second hand) I couldn't find any other lenses except from a Opteka 6.5mm f/3.5 fisheye for 349,99 CAD which isn't that much of a street lens. Other lenses i could recommend would be the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (if you get a good one) or Canon 50mm f/1.4, but those lenses are way more expensive than 300 CAD. Hope this helps you though.
Thanks!
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (if you get a good one)
There are bad ones? Mine is lovely and sharp at f/5.6 which makes it perfect for a lot of things including street photography, though it is considerably more than $300.
There are bad ones?
AFAIK Sigma can make some pretty splendid lenses, but their quality control can be hit and miss with some batches coming with calibration problems, etc.
There are bad ones? There are a lot of Sigma lenses which don't focus correctly, or aren't sharp as they are supposed to be. My advice to everyone who wants to buy a sigma is to test it on a focuschart to check if it does not have back or frontfocus.
AFAIK Sigma can make some pretty splendid lenses, but their quality control can be hit and miss with some batches coming with calibration problems, etc.
Hmm, I guess that's the same with any third party though. But even so, I'm sure they would recalibrate it for you if you contacted their support. I heard there was some backfocus problems with some of their older lenses but most of those are out of circulation now anyway.

There's still a chance the consumer won't notice even notice the lens would have errors, and Sigma knows this. This is not something i made up. I've heard this in person from a Sigma sales representative. (plus the fact that Sigma lenses are the most returned to store lenses for exchange or refund in the Netherlands, just because of this reason)

The only time I even shoot at f/1.4 is when I'm manually focussing for video anyway.

All this talk about the Sigma 30mm 1.4 potentially having issues is making me worried mine will. *Crosses fingers* Won't have time to return it
All this talk about the Sigma 30mm 1.4 potentially having issues is making me worried mine will. *Crosses fingers* Won't have time to return it
Well it isn't just the 30mm f/1.4 lens, it's all sigma lenses in general. But Sigma will fix it for free if your lens has any of these issues; that's the aftersales part. It just takes more time, that's all.
So here's the camera I'm getting from my parents. It's alright, however I still really wish I could use our film cameras. Anyone else have one of these, and if so any tips for taking better shots, since it has a major lack of changeable lenses? [sp]I'll probably steal my dad's Nikon D3S occasionally after he gets it, though.[/sp]
