Hey just curious to see what you guys think about the new Canon 40mm pancake, the stepper motor focusing seems interesting although it has a few draw backs, but I could consider getting one given its size and price point. My currently owned lenses are the 50 1.8, the 55-250, and of course kit lens. All for my T3i. I definitely would like having a lens I can just slip into a pocket and take with me incase of a dark shooting situation when I'm out and about with either the kit or my tele.
Hey, I'm in pretty much the same situation, own the same lenses and was planning on buying the 40mm BUT I decided not too for these reasons: -40mm is too near to 50mm imho -It's slower than the 35mm in terms of autofocus (although quieter) and aperture (2.8 (40mm) vs 2.0(35mm)) -The 35mm only costs 30€ more over here -The 50mm is only a bit bigger and probably more suitable if you need something for real low light, F/1.8 is a hell lot better than F/2.8 These are my reasons on why I am going to buy the 35mm instead of the 40mm.
you don't do video do you
Well seeing as it's a photography subforum...
yeah, but the 40mm is targeted towards video creators, and a lot of people here do dslr video, so there's little reason to purchase the stm motor unless it's for video.
I'm thinking about buying a Tamron 70-300 VC. Should I go for it or save my money for a better telezoom? I have a 600D, if that helps.
I have one. It focuses reasonably fast (On my 550D) and it's sharp across most of the range. The 70-200 f4 was not that much more expensive when I bought mine and it's quite a bit sharper and focuses faster, so see if you can have a play with both. Here's a picture of a heron I took with my 70-300 VC at 300mm f/8. What you can't tell from this shot is the bokeh is pretty awful, lots of high contrast edges. I'd post more shots taken with it but I don't have lightroom installed at the moment.
Well I bought the 40mm pancake and I love it on the 5D Mark II. I got one from the first shipment of 40mm's in the camerastore I work in. It's really sharp even wide open and the AF motor does it's job fast without sounding like a toy car, and it does feel faster than the 28mm f/2.8 (uses same AFD motor as the 35mm f/2) or 50mm f/1.8 which I also have used. I also very much liked the Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL II lens which a friend of me owns, but that lens is about 500 euros which is simply too much for such a lens in my opinion.
Been looking around for a new lens to become my walk around lens. I've got a crop sensor so the nifty fifty is a little tight. (Although it is a wonderful portrait shooter!) My criteria are: Non EF-S because I plan on going full frame sometime, under 1K hopefully, great optics of course, and a zoom range that allows me to go decently wide on my 1.6x camera. Since Id be using this to shoot people, I dont need a ridiculous upper range. f2.8 would be a nice bonus, but not completely necessary. So far I've been eying the 16-35 L, and the 24-70 L. (first models) 16-35: I love the lower range of this one, which would be pretty wide even on my cropped sensor. Though the barrel distortion might prevent it from displacing my 50 1.8 as a portrait lens. I was hoping to get something that would be able to do both group shots and tighter work. 24-70: Not much cons that I see on this one, except the price. And maaaybe the focal range on the lower end. Of course my insatiable gear lust tells me to go L, but maybe you guys have some other ideas? Are the f4 L lens worth looking at? Perhaps I should take a look at some of the older discontinued L lenses? Or maybe third party? Edit: I think the 24 would be ideal, the amount of distortion even on a crop frame from the 16-35 is still too much.
I have no nifty fifties. I have Canon's 24-105L, 100-400L, 100L & Samyang 14.
What do you think of the 24-105? Thats in the running for me now, along with the 17-40.
It is a wonderful lens. My favorite of the three, I always have it on my camera. The quality is great, almost nothing negative about it. 9.8/10 would buy again.
Would getting an E-P1 with a 17mm lens be a bad idea? It's the cheapest option I can find for a mirrorless camera. Is it outdated for the price though?

The 17mm is a nice little lens, and the E-P1 is still a capable camera although it's quite old now.

I just needed a "socially acceptable" camera I could fit into my pocket for college.

Is it outdated for the price though?
If you look around you can find an Olympus E-PL1 kit for much cheaper. From what I understand the E-PL1 is a slightly better performer than the E-P1 albeit with a good but cheaper build. However all the E-PL1 kits come with a 14-42mm lens instead of the 17mm. Also I hope you don't want it to literally fit in your pocket, because it won't, even with the lens off.
A little over 400 USD. I just needed a "socially acceptable" camera I could fit into my pocket for college.
Who cares about socially acceptable. I walk around campus with a Mamiya TLR... Don't go for something you might not want as much because of a silly thing like that.
Mamiya TLR? That's not socially acceptable. That's socially superior.
None of it socially matters, coming home with gnarly shots is socially superior. The pictures last, the impressions you were making on random strangers don't.
It's just that I would be feeling great about walking around with such a camera when all my friends have shitty point-and-shoots.
It's just that I would be feeling great about walking around with such a camera when all my friends have shitty point-and-shoots.
Though they tend to be quite a bit more intimidated by it than they would a simple point and shoot.
If you have a camera that is "less socially accepted" than those your friends have and you take beter pictures because you know how to operate it, that would be way more satisfying than having a "socially accepted" camera that is going to be outdated in a year or two. (by outdated I mean there will be cameras with even higher MP count or whatever they try to sell then.) Or you could just buy a 1D

I mean of course I'm going to use the D7000 for photojournalism and ~artistic~ stuff, but I want the other for travel and other stuff like that.
Finally got the money and purchased this thing
Look at what I got in the mail today. :3
Just got a 550D/T2i with the kit lens, 50mm f1.8, 430EX II and a bag all new for the price of the body alone. :D Happy to finally have my own DSLR!

So as my birthday is coming up, I was going to get a Dslr. The question is which. I already settled for a Canon. But would the 650D be worth the more money compared to the 600D?
This video should help, starts at 2:40
I have already seen it. According to this, the more money wouldn't be worth for me. But I still want to hear your opinions on this.
$900 is quite a bit for an entry level camera. Snag a 500D or something and put the extra away for glass. Old cliche but it's the best way to go.
.. how in the hell did you manage that? you must be an expert at bargaining.
Caught end of the line sale at a local electronics store. Jumped on the occasion.
