Gear discussion thread v. "I own more nifty fifties than cameras they fit"

Just letting you know this conversation is very relevant to me. I'm still deciding whether to get a 50mm on my cropped senor or go with something like a 28mm.
Continue.
No you can't.
So what you actually mean is a wider perspective, because you can certainly fix lens distortion in post...
Less perspective distortion.
But there isn't this because the lens is translating the center portion of the image? It's projecting the same angle of view, but since it is a center crop there is less perspective distortion there. Since compact cameras pull ludicrous numbers like 5mm-20mm (example numbers) and they aren't distorted when the FoV emulates 50mm, and medium format lenses like 50mm are as distorted as a 28mm
Is this wrong roll? I'm pretty sure it's not but if I am I'd like to see something to prove otherwise. This is my understanding of the matter from research I've done.

Well whichever you pick, the perspective and distortion aren't really that big of an issue. If you want an effective focal length of 80mm or 50mm is entirely up to you.

You're thinking of a different kind of distortion.

Yep.
Which is why I'd personally get an 85mm if I had a FF camera.
Oh okay that makes sense then. I do like the 85mm perspective a lot which is why I keep my 55mm 1.2 (despite the incredible flaws with my copy.
Usually it's good to have a 35mm and 85mm equivalent or a 50mm and 135mm, otherwise you run into redundancy

I don't even know. Whichever would be better for video. So I'm guessing a wider would be better
okay I need some advice regarding an SD card
with my a77 i'm going to be using video a lot, most likely 60p as it's for choral productions. So I need to get a good SD card, because the one i'm using in my nex 5 is a lexar class 6 8gb (was a big sale, just bought it because my last one broke and it was like $6 shipped), which I don't think would be enough for the amount of video i have to film before being able to dump the card.
so should i get a sandisk extreme class 10 16gb or a transcend class 10 32gb?
they are around the same price, but i know sandisk is a better company and i heard some things about false readings for the transcend. but then again i don't know if video even needs class 10 this is just what i have assumed.
here's the two in question

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VNKNF0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
any input at all is appreciated!
Yeah that's why I was leaning towards the transcend, because it's mad cheap. But how long does a 16gb card hold? I need like an hour probably.
Hmm well AVCHD does lower bitrates meaning I would get more, and sandisk ultra are less than the extremes but still class 10...
So confusing.
I'd stick to class 10, coz I've seen many cameras hit their buffer quite quick using only a class 6 (even when that's all the manufacturer recommends).
Well the buffer for burst on the a77 is pretty lowly at 16 (considering 12fps that's like 1.3 seconds) I just don't know how that affects video. Think I'm going with transcend because 32gb sounds easier, and being 24mp files it would fill up quick regardless.
As long as you stick with a class 10 you'll be fine. Don't worry too much about brand, I've used just about every brand (not like off-brand Chinese ones) and I've had no problems with any of them. Only a few with my Class 10 PNY 16gb card where it 'stops automatically'.
Thanks for the advice guys
I think I'll go with the Sigma 50mm

My 32GB PNY one has that problem, I think it's some form of SD-specific memory fragmentation that probably doesn't occur on super expensive San-Disk ones. I just format the card if I need to record lengthy video though, or use my other class 10, which is the one I should use more often for video anyway as it's 8GB and usually completely empty.
what're your guys thoughts on the tokina 11-16mm ? I have a canon 550d and I'm looking for a lens to shoot stuff like music videos, interviews, and documentary type things. any input would be appreciated

I was also thinking of maybe using a prime lens instead, but I couldn't find one I liked
hell yeah, I got my speedlite 430EX II
no batteries though. No money either. So i can't use it. :l
It just leaked that Sony is making a Full Frame compact camera with a fixed Carl Zeiss 35mm f2 lens

Looks to be mildly larger than a nex with a small lens. If they get an external EVF on this sucker this could be a very big deal
Fixed lens, really? It can't be too hard to add a lens mount.
Right, so there is an unlisted compatibility problem with the EF-FD adapters on ebay. Not only will the AF confirm not work with the D30 but if the AF confirm PCB is completely missing the camera will simply refuse to work at all citing it can't talk to the lens. The only solution is to grind off part of the EF's lock ring so that when the adapter is fitted it does not flip the lens sense switch and thus you get to exploit one quirk of the camera where if no lens is fitted and the dust cap isn't on, the camera works no problem.

Also dug out my ring adapters. Nifty 50 + 55-49mm adapter + 49-50mm adapter + Ring flash = no more evil lens shadow.

It's to keep size down. They are working on a nex FF, but they only have aps-c lenses for it do at the moment it would be rather useless. And I believe the RX department is entirely separate from other imaging centers at Sony. Regardless this has very interesting implications, as this will be the absolute smallest 35mm format (bar a rollelie) camera ever. If the market likes it, then full frame mirrorless cameras with changeable mounts should start to rise up in no time.
question: can you not shoot wireless using only one flash with speedlites? I'm not superduper familiar with flash photography but according to the manual you need a mainflash and then use the wireless as a slave
Pretty sure it's just saying you need a popup flash to trigger it as a slave. Your camera might or might not support this. Alternatively buy a radio command

Ah, yes. I know that the 7D has a built-in flash wireless function, but the 550D (which I'm using) does not.
Would you care to point me towards a good cheap trigger?

I know cowboystudio makes some good ones. Should run about $20 for a single receiver.
I'm in the market myself, but my problem is the Sony iIso hotshoe, I don't know whether to buy one native for the Sony or get a regular one (I have a nice flash with a regular shoe). Either way I need an adapter from iIso to Iso, the difference would be putting it on the cameras port or the port of the flash.

I have another question. If I am not mistaken, the Speedlite 430EX II already has a receiver built in; so I would only have to buy a transmitter and not a combo-pack with receiver & transmitter?
I think you need a pack with both because it's third party. I believe the receiver built in is for using it as a slave with the pop up flash from the 7D. Combo of both should still be like $20
so I wanna get a 50mm prime lens, but I always hear you should invest in your glass. should I settle with a nifty fifty or save up for the 50mm 1.4?
the receiver/transmitter stuff works with the signal from your hotshoe. (or that other thing, the name of which I have forgotten. used for studio lights and stuff?)
slave function is reacting to another flash's... flash. but in the case of the 430EX it's not just *bang* flash, but the master fires a sequence, kinda like a TV remote.

honestly the 50mm 1.8 v2 is a better investment than the 1.4 with the looming upgrade of the 1.4 around the corner. it will hold value longer as an upgrade does not appear to be soon.
