Ive wanted to get into photography for ages, and now that i'm in college i have an excuse to be ~artsy~ and take ~photographs~ its a good time to buy a camera. i also did two years of filming in high school and havent done shit since, so i thought that a camera that also does video would be really nice to get me into it again apparantly the t1i can do respectable video and takes good pictures and i was told also runs pretty cheap ($400) but a quick glance shows that price is not going to happen.

Probably around $500 or so. the $400 price point was used though, and if i'm not wrong used cameras are fine?
Yeah used cameras are alright, you just want to make sure the shutter life isn't too much (wouldn't get anything over 10k accutations). The t1i is a great starting place, but if you do some hunting I think you could get a t2i for that price, it's worth the price difference
just bought this badboy! body only though.
I need a macro lens. My budget is ~250 €, can be less can be a bit more. Would Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS be a good choice? Or are there any better ones for that price range? Oh and i want to shoot small 'animals', flies and such.

For about 250 euro you could get a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro or a Sigma 50mm f/2.8 macro, and for Nikon you can get their 40mm f/2.8 DX Micro-NIKKOR (and the sigma 50mm macro is also for nikon btw).
I recommend this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-AF-S-Micro-NIKKOR-40mm/dp/B005C50H2Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347307534&sr=8-1
Can you recommend any? NIKON mount.
http://www.digitalrev.com/product/sigma-50mm-f-2-8/MTAzMQ_A_A maybe? Actually roll's suggestion is better.
If choosing between the sigma and the nikon i would go for the nikon tbh.
Nikon can't go FX though can it?
DX only. There's probably some nice macro lenses that can do FX in your pricerange, for upgrades later, especially if you're cool with manual focus.
Why only 40mm ? Wouldn't you wish for 100mm or more + macro?
You can just get closer, physically.
Quick question - is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS a decent lens? I'm looking for a telephoto for a T3i and I don't have a lot of money. The T3i seems to handle fine up to ISO 1600 so I wasn't too worried about the aperture, not to mention the (claimed) 4-stop IS system. I'm just starting out so I just wanted to know if it's a good choice and if there's any good alternatives in the same price range.
Why only 40mm ? Wouldn't you wish for 100mm or more + macro?
the longer you go, the harder it is to get as good of a reproduction ratio. 40mm is a decent distance (60mm APS-C), with 50mm being a little better (75mm APS-C). Plus if price is an issue, the wider macros are much cheaper. And longer lenses require to be stopped down more to have a more acceptable DoF range. Alternatively if you buy a teleconverter this preserves the minimum focusing distance of lenses. I use a Canon FD 50mm f3.5 for my (very limited) macro things, but honestly taking that out and setting it up is a chore, more often than not i resort to using the camera on my iphone 4s. In good light it's as good of a macro as any, the f2.4 aperture manages to get good shutter speeds, and the small sensor makes for a lot in focus. plus with the 8mp image you have good liberty for crops. most of my macro work is just product photography for ebay listings, and the iphone combined with the ebay app is extremely easy to work with.
Does anyone know how this lightmeter works? You spin the inner ring to your ISO, and the outer ring (if it moves) spins to either the aperture or a marking. Then you read in a line, whatever matches with what is proper exposure. If you had a shot of the front (the dial) I could help you better, that's a lot like the meter I use.
whats the best place to buy used cameras

Then I'm sorry to say it's probably dead. You did try pointing at, say, the sun? Selenium cells are particularly unresponsive when it comes to low light, sometimes they don't move when inside for me...
whats the best place to buy used cameras
eBay of course. Keh.com is a reputable dealer whom are very easy to deal with and give great descriptions of items. Craigslist is an alright place, but things are either ridiculously cheap or used and sol at the value the person purchased them for. eBay will get you the best deals, keh is a better service though (6 month warranty, 30 day money back garuantee)

No battery, just a very strong magnet and some stuff. Probably dead. Maybe someone over adjusted it.
Yeah. Tried a lot. No battery, just a very strong magnet and some stuff. Probably dead. Maybe someone over adjusted it.
The photocells can die out after a while, and selenium cells haven't been used new in cameras/meters in a while if I remember correctly. That's probably your reason. On the bright side, it's at least in an aesthetically good condition...
sony just announced their photokina products personally i think they just announced a lot of things that are a big deal http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666489355#additionalImage1%22 FULL FRAME 1080 60p e mount with phase detection AF at $3300 speaks for itself
The thing is, there is a Sony shop in Terminal 3 of Singapore Airport that ALWAYS has the latest, bleeding edge tech, it had a frigging cam with 3d recording and a 3d screen without glasses and stuff like that, tablets I hadn't seen, I spent like 2 hours in it last march.
Surprised no one has posted this yet http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25488/D600.html
that thing is a fucking beast ^^^ I was expecting it to be a bit less expensive though
