I've been doing a lot of wildlife and the last 10-15 times I've been out its been a case of "I really wish I had that telephoto right about now." The reason I am choosing between the two is because I have a chance to get the 55-300mm at around $300 so the prices are pretty comparable. I just wanted to know what other people thought before I make a mistake.
Well here in the Netherlands, you don't have the risk of smashing your lens on a rock. Bought my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 without a UV filter because I plan on getting an all-in-one set with a circular polarizer and a ND filter.
Just so you know there will be adverse affects if you use both at the same time, the polarizer when twisted (behind the ND filter I believe) will basically cause it to be a variable ND filter.
Just so you know there will be adverse affects if you use both at the same time, the polarizer when twisted (behind the ND filter I believe) will basically cause it to be a variable ND filter.
I might be wrong, but wouldn't that only be the case if it was already a variable ND that you were using? Regular ND filters are just dark glass from memory.
If I can recall correctly to make a variable ND you need 2 polarizers, and both of them need to be those linear ones. (Circular polarizers don't work)
Variable ND filters work with some kind of CPL, mine does anyways. Not entirely sure the process though.
I have the idea I'm rarely going to use the ND, let alone in combination with the CP. It's more about the UV and CP for me. Oh and, as for lens protection, lens hoods usually do the job while also improving image quality.
Variable ND filters work with some kind of CPL, mine does anyways. Not entirely sure the process though.
If what I learned in university is worth anything it should work by screwing one lamda/4 filter against another one, the first one pretty much polarizes part of your light like a reflection would do and depending on that the second one filters away that polarized light when the optical axis is not the same or just turns your light back to the way it was before if the axis is the same as the first one. This could be wrong and I never used one but if I had to build one I would do it that way. It's an effect similar to looking through modern 3d glasses into another one or an LCD screen and turning the screen.
I'm looking to purchase a new lens and the two I am trying to choose between are the 55-200mm Nikon and the 55-300mm Nikon lens. The optical quality is the same and both are all right cheap telephotos. Just a note though that the 55-300mm is quite heavy and you will need steady hands even with VR.
Variable ND filters work with some kind of CPL, mine does anyways. Not entirely sure the process though.
2 linear polarisers. As you increase the angle between them, less light gets through. So a CPL and variable ND would most likely conflict, but I don't see reason why standard ND would be an issue.
Is the extra distance on the 55-300mm worth it?
What is your current gear if you don't mind me asking?
Anyone here familiar with filming in keylight by having a LED-panel mounted ontop of the camera? If so, recommendations on brands on said product? [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] I'm talking about something like this:
Looks more like they have some of these and a ring light around the lense rather than a LED panel. For a LED panel that is connected to your camera you probably also need a stable shoulder rig.
What is your current gear if you don't mind me asking?
A d60 with the 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 kit lens.
About to buy a wireless remote http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749989-REG/Vello_RW_C1_FreeWave_Wireless_Remote_Shutter.html Any better ones you recommend?
Got my minolta 24-50 f4 and 70-210 3.5-4.5 today! They are both really sharp, much better than my 28-105 I might sell that one now.
I'd reverse mount the shit out of the 70-210.
Aren't wide angles better for reverse mount? I used to reverse mount my 16mm and get ungodly close
Ah, maybe. I'm not sure, I've been wanting to try reverse mounting recently though.
I'm not a fan. I did it for a while and it was cool but getting a good shutter speed was nigh impossible. Now I just stick to not doing macro :P
Possibly, though my nex 5 handles noise well and I had to push 6400 for almost every shot I would take. And the DoF is so incredibly shallow its difficult to do anything. I think I have sold processor pictures laying around somewhere
i bought 2 lenses from a thrift store today a 135mm f/2.8 (left) and a 28-200mm f3.8 (right) IMG_3300[1] by street-wizard, on Flickr 28-200mm: (the af motor on this one is kinda fucked up) IMG_3263 by street-wizard, on Flickr 135mm: IMG_3270 by street-wizard, on Flickr IMG_3265 by street-wizard, on Flickr [editline]23rd September 2012[/editline] 10 bucks each
f/3.8 isn't something you hear often
not entirely too sure why no thrift's/swaps/pawn shops/flea markets/etc down here have NOTHING camera related. i mean, for christ's sake, i'm on the boarder of mexico; crazy shit comes from there 24/7. you'd figure there would be at least some camera related things..
It finally arrived and I'm keen to give it a run for its money. This weekend better watch out.
picked up a fully functional Canonet 28 rangefinder, pristine condition (save for a sticky oval where the certified sticker used to be). Needs new battery to meter, but can be shot manually without battery assistance. Came in its leather case, which is squished a bit and has that sticky, oily feel you get from a lot of old black leather cases apparently. Has 15 shots taken on the film already, curious what's inside, probably a few badly exposed photos of people's friends in the same aisle of the thrift shop [t]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rNVQeWG7eBI/UGCPwGGqJyI/AAAAAAAACSI/ld1mEMz0JGA/w497-h373/2012-09-24_11-50-15_569.jpg[/t] or maybe it'll be a horrible crime scene and I'll be blamed because I turned in the roll !!
Just bought the Canon 50mm 1.8 !

Right, I know pretty much nothing about cameras, so I need advice. Looking for a good entry-level DSLR, what do all of you think of the Canon EOS 600D? I'm considering buying it from Kogan, anything wrong with them? Here's the kit I'm considering: http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/canon-eos-600d-kit-single-lens-18-55mm/
