If it's a crop sensor canon, I would go with the 35mm. Why? 35mm is a bit more wide-angle and closer to 50mm than the 40mm is. (in terms of what you can put into the frame) You can shoot it more open so it's even better for low light. And it has USM autofocus which is pretty quick, compared to the 40 mm's STM focus which is not as fast.
the 35mm is not usm but it's faster and wider
Just won a Sony 35mm f1.8 off eBay for $130, hoping its a fun lens. Will probably sell my sigma e 30mm 2.8, seems a bit redundant to have both.
50 f/1.8 was sure a fun lens to use. Made me thought about the framing and the shallow DOF was awesome to play around.
50mm's are fun, but they are a bit tight in lots of situations, that's why I decided to get a 35mm. That and I have like five 50mm lenses so I thought I'd try a new length for digital.
never enough 50's I tell ya also 35 is the 50 of the crop sensor world so there's that
I have the following 50's Canon nFD 50mm f1.4 Canon FD 50mm f1.4 chrome front Canon FD 50mm f3.5 macro Canon FL 55mm f1.2 (it's a 50 pretty much) Minolta Maxxum 50mm f1.7 Then the following crop 50's Fujian CCTV 35mm f1.7 Sigma 30mm f2.8 And now the Sony 35mm f1.8 Got to sell the sigma because its not as fast as the Sony, and the CCTV lens is quirky n cool enough. Then maybe the 50mm nFD because I don't use it (can't sell the chrome it's my mom's old lens). Then I want to sell the macro to get money for a 100mm macro for product stuff to get more working distance. So yes you can have too many 50's ;( I have first hand experience. Waiting for a full frame mirrorless release to let go of some old lenses, I expect prices to go up yet again
Does anyone have any experience with Magic Lantern?
i know it doesn't take you outside
the 35mm is not usm but it's faster and wider
Ah, I thought the cheaper one had USM too but that was the more expensive 35mm one.
Ah, I thought the cheaper one had USM too but that was the more expensive 35mm one.
Yeah the new 35mm is a good lens with IS and USM, but at a price point exactly the same as the new sigma 35mm f1.4. From reviews the sigma is better, reported by several websites to be the best 35mm DSLR lens ever, beating its Carl zeiss counterpart
SNIP
i know some of you guys shoot on medium format mamiya's, this guy is letting go of a lot of lenses for what looks to be some fair prices http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/interest-check-mirex-mamiya-lenses_topic94338.html it's worth checking out if you have one of those cameras
I would find it funny if it came in a box. Does it really need one? It's like when I buy new rucksacks, I put them in another rucksack to carry home. My parents got me a 600D and extension tube, now the fun begins. I still need to learn, I've only got the bare minimum on how to operate the camera. Manual focus is fun. I'm only using the 18-55mm lens that came with it for now, and I need to work on using the extension tube, I'm thinking a flash diffuser is what I need because the whole subject is ruined by bright light. As for buying a lens in the future, I've had my eye on a Tamron 70-300mm and Tamron 60mm lens, I might get the 70-300mm first just because it's more affordable and the zoom looks like it'll be good at air shows.
i dunno about you man, but i only have a 50mm, and i love this thing to death. i feel like it's the only lens i need to get done what i like to do.
i've used so many that i've come to learn they have serious trade-offs per lens, like each one i own has individual quirks. i use my 55mm f1.2 more than any other because it's fast if i need it to be, and the rendering at f2 is superior to any other 50mm's i have. but having an 85mm on crop is limited for normal shooting conditions, which is why i got the 35mm. better for interior stuff which i want to get more experience shooting
[t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1031910/Img%20Dump/IMAG0172.jpg[/t] Acquired a flash! Remember guys when you take these out of the box and throw them on your camera's make sure you under stand what 1/1 means... I still see purple spots...

For those of you with an external flash: Is high speed sync worth having? I'm thinking of getting either the 565 Yongnuo (no high speed sync) or 568 yongnuo (has hi speed sync) I want to use flash to capture action such as basketball shots (lighting is crap in high school gyms) or other action shots like skateboarding, bmx, etc. What I'm confused about is if you're able to capture and freeze fast action using a flash that has no hi speed sync. (Shutter speed is limited to 1/250 or so.)
Tommorow im gonna go get a Nikon D5100 opinions?
Got a flashlight + remote trigger for Christmas, the well-lit-ness of indoor shots is just... amazing. How did I ever shoot without it?
my mom got me, my fiancé and my sister the nikon mug from photojojo for christmas, it's pretty snazzy I immediately guessed where the presents came from when I spotted those tiny rubber dinosaurs on top of the packages, heh my only gripes are that the focus mode switch label is pointing away from the (actually movable) switch, and the text on the back is 'chinese fake reproduction' quality. The spelling "Aapherical" is driving me mad [t]http://25.media.tumblr.com/eeb52a157192af4626267dc3b952aef1/tumblr_mfn8f1y9Uo1rp3ua6o1_500.jpg[/t] pretty cool though, I can 'zoom' to extend the barrel, whee

The sensor is 24 megapixels, but has better color depth, dynamic range, and even noise performance.
hah, i have a lens mug as well, except it's a canon one!
trog, the funny thing is that it's a direct copy of the lens otherwise- I love how the only thing technically missing is the word 'nikkor' on the gold lens spec in the picture, which is just a big black spot didn't know there was an official model either, though I'd love to have something like the digital rev authentic L-glass mug, heh
