This usually means there's a short in the wire. In other words, the wire has worn out, and it only makes a connection when the wire is bent a certain way.
If you REALLY wanted, you could isolate the short, snip that section of the cord out, then solder the proper wires together and cover the exposed wires with shrink tubing, but that honestly sounds out of the question, and looks like shit.
Just buy some new ones. They sell headphones at the dollar store if you're really cheap, but those will short out pretty quickly, too.
