it's just so weird hearing chief's tone change like that. surreal really. i was used to him being a logical, level headed soldier. now he seems a bit deranged (in a cool way.)

He seems like a normal fucking person now.
Huh, was that the Infinity burning in the sky?
If so, fucking awesome, can't believe 343 managed to turn a space ship into a freakin' mary sue.
Are you surprised?
"OH BTW DURING THE WHOLE WAR WE FUNNELED ALL OUR MONEY IN MAKING A SHIP HALF THE SIZE OF A MOON. HOW IS ANY OF THIS POSSIBLE? BECAUSE IT'LL LOOK COOL!"
all the important stuff is shoved into novels and comic books that no one will read
I seriously hate this shit. They did it with Bungie's original games, but the main trilogy had enough story where you could catch what was going on.
The books from Bungie were mostly just exposition and stuff, explaining background elements. You didn't need to know about MC's childhood or the Spartan III program or what exactly happened at Reach because the glancing they gave over the stuff they did mention was enough to go by.
That was the earlier novels anyway. I gave up when Grasslands came out when they started retconning the fuck out of everything.

considering the fact that he was kidnapped when he was ~7 and forced into a military industry never having to experience what real life is like, this probably is pretty damned accurate.

I love the Locke trailer, though it bothers me how generic his armor design is in comparison to the Chief's. Locke looks like he could have stepped out from a dozen of other games like Section 8.
Looks cool. Not cool enough to make me want to trade in my PS4 but cool enough to make me want an xbone
why does everybody call him Spartan Locke? is it a rank in itself in the 343 games? it just sounds awkward to me
why does everybody call him Spartan Locke? is it a rank in itself in the 343 games? it just sounds awkward to me
"Spartan" is a program, not a military rank. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but so far we've had four generations of them. From what I remember, Master Chief is a Spartan-II, an older, bulkier bigger kind of soldier. All of the main characters in Reach with the exception or Jorge are Spartan-IVs, a smaller and more compact armoured variant.
Locke likely is actually a Spartan, but of a different generation which is why he's vastly different to MC.
Spartan IVs are not augmented AFAIK, they're just special forces given power armour.
It kinda made sense for the Arbiter call him that because he's an alien and maybe sees Spartans as super people or something, but it's a bit weird for the Chief to call him that.

It's a bit odd, but not unprecedented. Even at the end of Halo 2, Chief referred to himself as "Spartan 117" when identifying himself to the human fleet.

They're Spartan III's, Spartan IV's were introduced in Halo 4.
the two trailers and the "two sides to the story" thing makes me imagine that john and locke are being interrogated after they had a battle and are both trying to make themselves look cool
"so it was like midday, and I was like 'all hail the conquering hero' and walked over to him and his armour was all fucked up because I'd shot him so much, and he was lying on the ground in front of a statue of himself. then I pulled out my pistol, and-"
"no! it was like the evening, and I was walking over to you, and you were lying down in front of a statue of me! then I pulled out my pistol!"

I don't think anything 343 have came up with themselves (Armour, weapons, vehicles etc) fits in with the look of things from the previous games.

no i know it just sounds weird for everyone to be calling him that. shouldn't it just be Locke? it makes me think his full name actually is Spartan Locke and he just happened to coincidentally also join the Spartan program later on. maybe that's how he got the job
Pretty sure we will be playing as both Locke and Chief considering it hints at the "two sides to every story" thing that's been said for some time now. Ok now to pre order this before it comes out towards the end of the year, and more darker in the series? Count me in.
There were some spoilers or leaks way back hinting about a new forerunner character too.

some of the armour looks good.
The sticky grenade pistol fits the halo style.

interesting how there's a chunk of the chiefs head missing from the statue in his trailer but it's intact in locke's trailer
Honestly the Locke trailer just made me think this is complete wank, and not worth my time, especially after H4. However the Chief trailer caught my interest a bit. I loathe 343i's Halo, and one of the things that annoyed me was that ONI seemed to go from being KGB/Gestapo being all hush hush, and silencing anyone that got in their way, to Hollywood CIA supplying terrorists and funding wars between the Covie races.
I dunno, ONI just seems like it went full retard in 343's hands, and the Chief trailer made me smile because what he was saying could of been said to ONI as a whole, seeing as most of the messes in the 343 games are indirectly caused by them.
Also, about calling him Spartan Locke, play H4's spartan ops. They all call themselves "Spartan [Insert useless, overly annoying and talkative character's name here]". Probably because no one else acknowledges them as proper Spartans, so they have to do it themselves.
ughhh that gundam armor always makes me feel ill

besides that armor suit (forerunner stylization?) I honestly haven't had much problem with the art direction throughout the series, and each game tackles pretty focused variations of it.
The games have all had a solid design language to their cores that speaks volumes about the story for that chapter.
H1 loved the nature infused with catacombs of steel, exploring the brand new concept and trying to figure out why it exists and why the covenant are so interested. Overall language is the solid grey metallic structures against nature terrain.
H2 loved exploring the engineering and architecture of humans, covenant, and forerunners, and put a lot of love into designing their maps. Lots of that utilitarian blocky human architecture, destroyed concrete with rebar.
Recon expanded on H2 with some nice visual upgrades and obviously focused more on the urban human structures, lots of dark greys and blues, felt like rain on metal all the time.
H3 really loved weathered stone, vast landscapes and isolated forerunner facilities. Emphasized how small you were compared to the enemy and the surroundings as a whole
Reach really played well to the human side of technology and gave the pillar of autumn a bit of meat with the whole shipyard scene. Delved back into that H2 feel for humanity again
H4 deviated from the tried-and-true technology of human/covenant and played more towards 'modern' Forerunner technology (rather than old facilities/basic security devices), pushing on the concept that any technology sufficiently advanced enough is no different from magic. They played out a lot of forerunner tech so hey why not utilize that for non-essential gameplay elements
I think part of the fun in playing odd diversions from the original material is to stop being a nitpicking dick about things and just experience it.
As for bringing up that ship, Forward Unto Dawn was the ship in halo 2, 343 didn't do anything to it. It looked like a doofy mosh of legos in H2 but high quality remakes of the model are gorgeous. Beyond that, Infinity was intended as a battle-ready arc for humanity should earth be lost, and for that purpose it really isn't even that big, as it's only 5x longer than the Pillar of Autumn (5.6km vs 1.17km(haha references)), and the pillar is made out to be a pretty standard size for UNSC's many warships. It could be way worse, like Star Wars's super star destroyer, which ranked in at 20km long compared to the iconic star destroyers that were between 1-2km

I'm looking forward to H5 explicitly because it's not going to be identical to H1-4, it'll be a new experience and I'd much rather have that than the equivalent of some more H2 missions like so many people pine for
This is teasing me to hard. I need to know what happens in Halo 5.
Yeah guys the funky art designs if the implementations of covenant and forerunner tech.
Also to sum shit up
Spartan I - Normal soldiers that are genetically enhanced. Stronger and smarter with Flood immunity (not known at the time)
Spartan II - 7.5ft Superhumans with MJOLNIR power armour. Basically kidnapped when they're like 6 and genetically fucked until they can only be Spartans
Spartan III - Slightly less of the above, much less genetics since they start later. Equipped with both MJOLNIR and "Semi-Powered infiltration armour" which is a glorified ODST get-up
Spartan IV - Even less of the above, basically a Spartan I with souped up MJOLNIR GEN.2 armour to compensate

also Halo has always played with the art design, but things have always been rather subdued. It's supposed to convey an image of humanity, five minutes in the future. although you get stuff like the Marine armor changing or the warthog getting new guns, they never flat out retconned the design of a ship into a rectangle.
Halo 4 completely retconned the design of forerunner tech, changed the look of everything and starting shooting ridiculous stuff out for cool factor. You can make the UNSC look advanced and show the designs without betraying four games art direction. Throwing in vehicles the size of office buildings, walker mechs, giving spartans unicorn spikes and giving marines kevlar doesn't make things look Forerunner and futuristic, it just makes it look like you're playing some other game.
There was nothing in the UNSC's new design that even really conveyed they incorporated forerunner tech, and it sounds more like a handwave to try and excuse some of the ridiculousness. Besides some flashy lights on Spartan armor, which happens to be on Master Chiefs armor too (NANOBOTS!), there's no Forerunnerness or improvements.
Infinity used as an ark never did make too much sense either, seeing as there were still plenty of human colonies left when Earth got hit. Its construction could easily have funded fleets of frigates or some other vehicle, and it screams nothing but "LOOK HOW COOL OUR NEW SHIP IS!" when they suddenly try and explain why its there like that.

forerunner tech doesn't mean slapping unicorn horns and strobe lights on spartans
