Why the fuck not?
"Dildo" was the first thing I thought when I saw that one printing in latex. v:v:v

Yeah...that IS impressive...
I want one to build a massive Android. Just for the hell of it.

Amazing work, but 17 months! Much effort
I'm guessing you have to export the file from some form of 3D modelling program into a program designed FOR the 3D printer in order to print? And if so: does this program allow you to resize the model before printing, and does it tell you how many cubic inches/centimetres/whatever it will take up?
Yes, you have to export it in a .stl or .3ds
Amazing work, but 17 months! Much effort
I'd hazard a guess and say he probably got lazy at some point (or points) during the process and went for like 4 or 5 months at a time without actually doing any work (because he couldn't find parts or something).
Yes, you have to export it in a .stl or .3ds
And you can find out the exact volume of it prior to printing and scale it at the push of a button to suit your price range?
Robin also told me that the price of these printers are diving downwards. "In some years everyone will have one of these, like you probably have a normal printer."
I'd love to have one, they are amazing :3:
Spoke to Dr. Yang today - he wants me to design a nozzle for 3d printing with metal as part of a research project. Shit just got real.

Yes, which cad software you can find the exact volume, which is what where I work does. The cup in my previous post was I think 11.96oz. from bottom to top brim.
Also, my boss emailed me this today, I figured it would pertain to this topic:

Wouldn't you either have to either:
Use filings and then bring it up to temperature, or
Have it come out molten?

That's some wild stuff going on - hope they can make it work. Where does it end?

He didn't elaborate, but I assumed one of these approaches was required
Yeah, I miss that high school. to bad im in college now that has no engineering department. Also when did they get a laser cutter i only remeber the 3d printer.
We got it around the end of Semester 1
The laser is absolutely amazing. Anything is possible with that.
You lucky bastard. All my school has is leaky ceilings.
We have those too. When we got back from Spring Break, the laser engraver was literally FILLED with water. It still worked thankfully.

I'd suggest designing a nozzle that can be inserted and removed easily, like a slide and twist lock.
Then the nozzle could be made out of sand and clay, like steel pourers do, it's called sand casting.
So when the molten iron cools down in the nozzle, you can just bin the nozzle or smash it and recycle the sand.
Since sand and clay are cheap, making nozzles out of it would be quite cost effective I'd say.
Holy dogshit this post took me at least 6 tries to do right.
(If you become a millionaire because of this, remember I get royalties)

I want a WCC
Someone print me a printer!
I want a WCC
I was thinking this too
This is mother fucking amazing. I wanna print a portal gun using it :3
This is mother fucking amazing. I wanna print a portal gun using it :3
Had the same thought - might be worth seeing what sort of price shapeways can do for a fullsize one.
Might have to make some design tweaks to make it work of course
This is mother fucking amazing. I wanna print a portal gun using it :3
Printing a 1:1 portal gun will cost you a damn lot. And it's not even that good looking gun.
I'm very tempted to try and make one of these things.
The huge expensive commercial ones are amazing, they can print complex objects with lots of moving, interconnecting components which come out of the machine fully assembled.
Printing a 1:1 portal gun will cost you a damn lot. And it's not even that good looking gun.
Depending on the material you chose, it won't be as much as you would think. The majority of the cost is gonna be because it's going to take like 10 hours.

Who cares if it's ugly? It's from fuckin Portal.
Jay Leno has one of those and he made a water pump for a steam car with it. :v:
Someone call steve jobs and we'll have an iCreate for this shit.

Actually, that is a real interesting point, considering how popular his addresses were, I have to wonder how much more often we would of seen these commercially, rather then just in schools, if this would of been demonstrated at such an address, you saw how competitors responded to ipad and iphone, because I see at least the ipad a lot more in public now.
However, there is always the price tag, its just actually since my high school CAD class had one, and learning how useful it was to make model cars and game controllers a reality, I wish I owned one. I mean, you need a replacement part for a piece of furniture, and doing stuff this way is a lot easier, then carefully having to use that machinery and do stuff by hand crafting, OR when you need a car replacement part (grille, wheel covers), this machine really comes in handy.
I would make an HEV suit with this.
