I am atheist myself. Religion is about believing, not explaining. yes, it is incorrect, but it is hard to convince truly believing people that they are wrong. I tried it myself.
If someone believes in things that can be demonstrated to be false right before their eyes, then we should be questioning their sanity to be honest.
It's not that Facepunch hates religion. We just hate the people who give religions a bad name. Christianity actually doesn't condemn homosexuality, people who do that aren't Christians. They're just idiots.
I, though, still stay away from religion.
Uh yes it does. Again, read this
I ask again.
Did you ever take a basic biology or psychology course? It would answer your questions pretty fast.
I'm a college student right now. Yes I've taken psychology courses and yes it does cover what happens to you in the physical world. I completely understand this and take all of it as 100% fact. That doesn't answer anything about if there might be something that happens afterwards, that we simply haven't found yet.
Everything you see, feel, hear, taste and experience is just electrical signals inside your head. When those cease, then you cease. You just stop. Think of sleeping but with no dreams.
So once you're dead, come back to me and tell me what happened.
Doesn't quite make sense, does it? You have a theory - and evidence to back it up, yes, but so far that's all it is - theory. Until we actually know what happens, it will stay a theory, and we will never know what happens so it will be a bloody theory until the end of time.
How are none of you understanding this?

Are you dense or something?
Are you dense or something?
No, but I'm very convinced you are.
If someone believes in things that can be demonstrated to be false right before their eyes, then we should be questioning their sanity to be honest.
You are right. I wonder why that kind of experiment was not done before.
Hope =/= Belief in.
Are you dense or something?

No, but I'm very convinced you are.
Nobody is bloody dense. We're a group of people arguing about things we will never - and I mean never - fully comprehend. If anything, we're all a little dense for still bickering on about this.

I don't know what context you're using the word "theory" in, but in a scientific context the heliocentric theory (the idea that the earth orbits the sun) is "just a theory" too. So is gravity, and cell theory (the idea that things are made up of cells) and atomic theory. There is nothing higher or better than a theory in science.
It's a proven fact that everything you experience is just electric signals going to and from your brain. When those signals stop, you stop. Why on earth should we believe for a second that we exist in some magical fantasy realm outside of our own, or even entertain this idea in the slightest?
You don't have to experience death to tell what happens. You just have to understand how the biological brain works and how it works to produce "you". It's not hard.
There is more proof of what I'm saying than there is proof of some mystical spiritual force leaving a body upon death.
But proof can be proven wrong.
I'm not saying I believe in life after death. Just that we can't be sure until it happens.
No, but I'm very convinced you are.
I understand where you're coming from, but in all probability, what you're proclaiming, isn't true. Your brain is a electro-chemical computer. All it does is send chemicals around your body and create thoughts with electrical impulses. You're saying it's something more than that. There isn't. This process of the brain will stop working when you die. The thing is, we can't comprehend eternity, or nothingness, or the end of oneself. The brain goes "The fuck? I'm gonna live forever."
But proof can be proven wrong.
I'm not saying I believe in life after death. Just that we can't be sure until it happens.
uhg....Logically speaking, and with all the proof and scientific knowladge we have, we can certanly say that your concessness ends with our brain. End of story

Because, as I have said, you can't come back from being dead because you're, well, dead. We have evidence towards one theory, and no way to prove or disprove it. So this will never go anywhere.
No one theory has presidence above the other. The only people who have further proof can't use it. The argument is totally landlocked because of this.

You're right, we can't prove that there isn't an afterlife.
What we can do however is use our powers of logic, science, and reasoning to filter out claims that are nonsense.
One side has MOUNTAINS of proof and the the other side has nothing for proof.
Please tell me how that is landlocked?
And I agree with you. I'm just saying, you can't really disprove anything else the same way you can't disprove God because theories will adjust around your new proof.
You know what, you guys are obviously set on this, so I'm just going to shut up and leave. But I have to ask:
Anybody here ever actually been dead?
And I agree with you. I'm just saying, you can't really disprove anything else the same way you can't disprove God because theories will adjust around your new proof.

People are declared legally dead everyday. Then revived. They come back from it, with tales of nothing. (And those who do come back with tales of nothing, has experienced hallucination, from you know... The brain shutting down it's functions and what not.)
A scientific theory is usually the ultimate "True answer", because it can be logically and with grace, proven.

two wrongs don't make a right young man
Honestly the idea of atheism is so ironic, because they set up this whole idea where they hate religion because they get yelled at for being the son of Lucifer or whatever. Less christians will go out of their way to insult you for what you believe, but far more atheists will bash you as soon as you say you believe in some sort of religion.
In my mind there's two types of atheists;
Ones I respect- The older, well thought out atheist. Probably wont attack unless you attack them, generally nice and respects your beliefs.
Ones that literally irritate the living fuck out of me- 13-23 year-olds who just realized they have an opinion and need to shout it out to the rooftops, will take any chance to give you shit for what you believe but then incessantly rant about how religion is always bashing them.
Seriously though, MOST(Note the word most) atheists have turned atheism into a (extremist) religion, attacking religion and some saying it should be banned etc.
The power of faith! :downs:
But seriously, my point exactly. It just irks me that people of your belief have to say stuff like this, it's extremely insulting, but also the reason none of us can have a fucking serious conversation.
[editline]4th December 2011[/editline]
They have the power of reason and logical, both very powerful abilities, and yet they choose to believe in something because they are told without question or doubt.

Atheist just spent the last several thousand years being raped, executed, tortured, robbed, and exiled.
Don't give me that fucking bullshit about how atheists need to shut up. It's about fucking we had the ability to speak out.
And every other religion hasn't? Before you throw that out there I can give you many many examples about how EVERYBODY has been tortured over the past EXISTENCE OF HUMANITY. Racism, Sexism, etc etc.
Now the question is, are we still speaking up today?
Did you experience that pain yourself?
And with the amount of swearing you have in your post I find it hard to take your point seriously.
I don't hate, I pity.
It's silly.

Awww. Did I hurt your feelings? I'm so sorry
Kind of happy I'm not religious.
Most of the stuff I hear about religion is stupid, bigoted people who don't understand why people are different.
Yeah, I don't care about religion.

Atheism isn't about hating religion, it's simply lack of belief. When little shitheads go out of their way to insult you because of your religion it's just primitive group behavior: "Attack the other group". And that "fact" about the majority of atheists being extremists is bullshit. I'm fairly certain your main experience with atheists comes from internet fora, which usually bring out the worst sides of everybody. You could visit any Scandinavian country, openly declare your religion and nobody would give a shit.

It's not like you can actually identify as belonging to their group, seeing as you haven't experienced a fraction of what they have. You have always had the option to speak out, so there is no reason for you to have hard feelings about it.
