Extremely sad if you watch the whole video
Agree.

This masterpiece is probably it for me. The last part especially gets me. To me it means that anyone in the past, be it ancerstors and whatnot, talk to us from a distance in time, and we "reply" as in making our own answers with impressions chosen today. Powerful.

This song always bring tears to my eyes after my dad died.
This was played at my step grandma's funeral. Oh god I'm starting to tear up now.
Lost had some pretty sad but great music.

So this is kind of a weird one for me. I remember this song from when I was a little kid - couldn't have been older than seven or eight. For some reason, this song gave me the strongest emotional reaction. It'd come up occasionally on the radio, and whenever I heard it it'd just make me so sad - I'd be bawling my eyes out after hearing it. I have no idea why - there's nothing in the lyrics that I relate to (I don't have a sister and there was no emotional baggage with my dad) and I was way too young for a song about being a father to affect me. Perhaps it was the soulful, emotional singing and music? I was a sensitive kid but I don't remember anything else really making me so sad. I didn't - and still don't - understand. To be honest I haven't listened to this song in its entirety for probably over a decade. Even thinking about it (although at this point it's more the abstract idea of it than any lyrics) is making me feel a little melancholy right now. The depression is overwhelming. And if you really want to feel like shit: Honestly this whole album has a depressing sound to it.
:c
After nearly 2 pages of hippie shit, somebody finally posts the REAL saddest song.

This is the song I listen to most when depressed about life, loneliness, and God. And Elliott Smith is one of the saddest artists I know. The song has a long intro so stick around. "Give me one good reason not to do it / (because we love you) / So do it..." Smith eventually committed suicide (controversially, some people believe he was murdered).
Paul Hardcastle's 19. I mean it was at the top of the dance charts in the 80's but the lyrics consists of gems cut from the documentary " Vietnam Requiem" like these: "From what psychiatrists call Post-traumatic stress disorder Many vets complain of alienation, rage, or guilt Some succumb to suicidal thoughts" "You're 18 years old and you're wearin' somebody's brains around Your shirt because they got their heads blown off right next to you and that's not supposed to effect you. I can never understand. What would scare me? Is that we were to send a group of eighteen year olds 12.000 miles away and subject them to a year of that obscenity and have them not be affected. That's what would frighten me." "When we came back it was different, everybody wants to know "How'd it happened to those guys over there There's gotta be something wrong somewhere We did what we had to do All we want to do is come home Was it worth it" I still can't fathom how people could have danced to this stuff, but I guess that the point of the song, it's pop drum machine and synthesizers can drown out the voices on a dancefloor.
I own this on LP. Dad bought it a long time ago. Wierd stuff but still something pleasing, can't describe it.

Maybe not as sad as it is beautiful. I have never gotten tired of this song.
