ta-da! new car!! its a fixer-upper, but she runs smooth. First thing i'm doing is getting new wheels and tires, it vibrates pretty bad around 70mph.
I guarantee the tires and wheels got nothing to do with the vibrations. That car has been smacked good in both sides. Suspension is likely destroyed. I told you you'd be into it if you bought it - that car is junked, and everyone here would agree. Not really sure why you felt the need to throw away money, but have fun with the endless stream of problems that are about to ensue...

It's not negative - it is visibly a poor decision. Miata's have independent suspension, not sure if that year is the same - but I have a neighbor with one and his biggest complaint was it could be damaged easily. Usually when someone "parks" as hard as the previous owner who somehow hit both sides of the car on one pole - might i add, I'd say that cosmetic damage was the least of the issues, then you take it to a mechanic, and he says it's fine, then you drive it - and it shakes? Post up the picture of the other side of the car, and see if anyone else agrees with me that the car was not well taken care of. Like I said though - ask anyone here - I'm only a pretend jerk. Ask Valon Kyre - my arch nemesis. I hate that guy. Don't worry mate - we're here for you in General Discussions when you need to sort out your 70mph vibrations.

Its very common, the number one reason for car vibration. It drives fine up to 70, then it vibrates, then at 75-80ish it goes away. Thats another symptom of bad tires. If its not the tires it could be an axle. Not a hard fix. If its really bad, it could be a control arm. Also an easy fix. Thats why i bought it for $1700 and i'm not regretting it. my sources of information is 2 of my closes friends who both drive NA miatas, and who have worked through similar and worse problems. I don't mean to be uptight and snippy, but its really not as bad as you make it out to be.

It's in my nature to not trust previous owner's especially when a car gets banged up if you know what i mean.
Car drives fine, very minor crab walk. Eats ujoints weekly. Runs great! [editline]11th December 2014[/editline]
Its very common, the number one reason for car vibration.
I'm sorry but that's fucking wrong. A wheel being out of balance? yes but a tire "being bad"? no. .

honestly it cant be that bad a buy anyway, worst case you order a set of coilovers and other suspension bits and pieces.
honestly it cant be that bad a buy anyway, worst case you order a set of coilovers and other suspension bits and pieces.
I'm thinking maybe he was gonna buy it anyway because his friends had one, and if so I really hope it's not a complete loss of money. But I hope it works out. The passenger side of the car looked pretty messed up to me. The description in the craigslist add said the guy tried to "park" and somehow managed to hit a pole - up the entire side of the car, the paint was all peeled off the trunk, the interior looks like a lion lived in it, and the ad even said something along the lines of "we took it to a body shop to get an estimate and decided to move to a no Miata state" $1800 FIRM. I'm glad they at least went down $200, but I still feel from a visual perspective, it might be a bad deal. Like I said before though - i hope it's ok, as it would really suck otherwise.
Guys, the vibration he is talking about is the 65mph shimmy. Its super common in miatas. It is a problem caused by unbalanced tires. Its generally fixed by getting a professional to balance your tires or by getting an alignment. You can read all about it here.
Its super common in miatas. It is a problem caused by unbalanced tires.
Literally common in every car ever made.
Literally common in every car ever made.
Oval wheels are fine. Round is too expensive.

Also, the interior is way better then the pics show, that choink in the door and the space under the stereo are the two problem spots. The seats have no rips, the tombstone and dash have no cracks, it's all good inside. First thing I'm doing is buying a set of either daisies or bbs rims and getting a new set of tires on them. After that, fixing fender and bumpers.
The main reason I traded out my 17s for Acura 16s was because they were bent and tires damaged. This caused the car to pull hard right and shake at pretty much any speed, and I had them balanced repeatedly and each time the machine said they were fine. It's a good chance that its the tires or rims causing the shake, does it pull at all? get a set of steelies and swap em all out, if it ceases to shake, your tires or rims were the issue if not it's something else. You can also just replace all the tires which may yeild the same result, a fix or looking for another issue.
I got new tires on my old car and it felt like a different car, especially after the alignment

My Mercedes vibrates past 80 because of the cheap tires the second owner put on it, and the car has a full service history with no accidents, and always maintained by a high end MB specialist shop until the second owner bought it and then sold it to me 6 months later.
Speaking of tires and vibrations, James has been complaining that at high speeds (130km+), my car likes to shoot over to the left suddenly. What do you think about it? He also says there's a bit of play in the steering.
I like miatas, but how often are you going 70 mph in one that it even matters lol.
I like miatas, but how often are you going 70 mph in one that it even matters lol.
Gee I dunno... a lot? 70 is not very fast and it shows face regularly. Like highways. Those exist.
Gee I dunno... a lot? 70 is not very fast and it shows face regularly. Like highways. Those exist.
In the summer I commute 75-85mph for 30 miles to school 3 days a week in the Miata. Not sure where you guys live where you wouldn't see at least 65 on a weekly basis
Gee I dunno... a lot? 70 is not very fast and it shows face regularly. Like highways. And for most commuters in my city, we don't go over 60 in the freeways. Most roads are either 35 or 45 for us here.

Fastest speed limit here in Ohio is either 70 or 75, but nobody cares and there's a stretch of road that's completely flat where you will get run down unless you're pushing 80 in a 65. I ran mine 4.5-5k from Ohio to SC over the summer. It'll sing up there all day as long as it stays cool and has oil (which is an issue for some). That being said, its not a luxurious ride in the least. Car is noisy as hell at 45 mph anyways
