All money you'd like to donate to this album is going to charity as well, so good music + money = charity :)
Before anyone goes "ehh, another collection of EDM" I think you guys should take a listen, there's a lot of genres covered here, it isn't just EDM, and there will be something for everyone here. We decided that the way to make this the best thing for everyone is that the musicians who submitted stuff also review every release on the album, that way all of us get feedback, and help one another. I'll edit my critique into this post in a couple of minutes probably.
This is probably the first album where there are very few EDM tracks, so if you like cool rock and metal, and bossa nova then you're in for a treat!
pretty sure 10 had barely any EDM as well
4-PO-DMT A slow and melodic track, has a very lofi aesthetic which I can really dig. It quickly turns into something that wouldn't be too out of place in an 80's film soundtrack, which again, is a good thing. The kind of thing that would work quite well in a driving sequence. Despite being quite short, it certainly delivers a lot. Water Dream I wrote this one so i cant say anything about it Collision Course This is the only song on the album that I'm not really a fan of. I can see it working very well as the soundtrack to something dystopian and/ or visually upsetting. In that regard, this is a great composition, but it isn't something that I'd listen to walking around, or just at my computer. There's no denying that it's very well written, and produced, but it isn't something that you could just put on to listen to. Steel And Silver This is one of my favorite tracks on the release (alongside hakita's) the build up works very well, and the song sound consistently good. It's well produced house with an 80's twist, nothing more and nothing less. Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals Although the tracks don't have any indication of who wrote them (at the time of writing) It's obvious which track is Hakita's, Even if it wasn't for the joke name about his husbando, the extreme length of the song is the most obvious indicator. During the song there is a lot of repetition used, but not in a bad way. Most of his tracks are designed to have a central riff that the song always comes back to, it explores other things as well, but always returning to the one thing that started it. Although this may sound like some kind of orchestral piece, it's actually really chuggy heavy metal. I'm quite bad at pinpointing subgenres, but if you like crunchy music made with guitars, this is your kind of thing. Black Magic & Vodoo Women I'm unsure of the genre in this song, I'd probably go with psychedelic/ surf, but this is likely wrong. Slightly similar to the aforementioned track as through it's 11:46 length it explores many sounds, and tones. This personally is not my kind of music (hence my inability to correctly describe it) but if an almost 12 minute long soundscape with electric guitars, bongos and a distorted and absorbing breakdown sounds like your kind of thing, then this is the track for you. Party And Praise A mix of classical sounding composition and electric guitar riffs, with an organ. I'm a fan of this song actually, it reminds me a lot of RPG boss fights in a lot of early 2000s games, in the best way possible. It wouldn't be too out of place if I heard it while playing an RPG. The composition is solid, although having very destinct parst that are repeated is a bit of a let down. I would have liked it it was a little longer, but it loops well. Final Bossa I know nothing about Bossa Nova. I like this song, it's cheerful, and I wouldn't mind listening to it for extended periods of time. I'm a fan of the trumpet, it's got quite a distinct, but good sound to it. The intro and outro sound amazing, and the composer has real skill (whoever they are) Solid track, would listen to again.
About half way through and digging all the tracks so far! awesome job to all the artists. PS, you should put the artist's name in the song names, I don't know who made what. (unless it's supposed to be like that)
You should probaby tell who made which track. (Collision Course is mine lol) Anyway, listening now, I'll write reviews of each track later in the evening when I have more time to actually analyze the tracks. It is sounding really good tho!
I wish I could've sent mine in, but I had to finish that stupid paper. Maybe next time.
Here's my feedback for all the songs! 4-PO-DMT: I really liked the relaxing intro and then when the song picked up a little I really liked it. Has a kinda dreamy, or hazy feel to it. I really like that lead, it's really nice. Water Dream: Kinda cute, The only thing I have to say is it's a tad short and doesn't really go anywhere. Although that could be what you're going for! Cute thought, I like it. Collision Course: Definitely weird; makes me think of some sort of bad drug trip. The camera flash noise used as percussions was pretty neat too! Not really sure how well I could critique this because it's probably exactly what you were going for, all weird and skewed, neat though! Steel and Silver: This was my song. Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals: I like this a lot and its not really the type of music I listen to. Really heavy and fat, and Saika is kawaii as fuck so that's a plus. I really like how angry it sounds, while still being relatively slow, which is a cool combination. Great job! Black Magic & Vodoo Women: I really dig this one a lot. Sounds like it could have come right out of the 70's. I feel it almost has an old western vibe to it. It's really well done, sounds really professional too! Party and Praise: This one is just crazy, I love it. I especially love that retro organ and then the bassline that kicks in at around 1:26 is really cool too. Definitely really well done, keep it up! Final Bossa: My favourite song on the whole album, for some reason it reminds me of music you'd hear ona visual novel or something. Although this song could be applied to a lot of things, it's reallyrelaxing. I also like how the song changes its pace around 3 minutes in, doesn't get boring at all. Really nice work! Good job everyone!
I'll try and get my review up later tonight
4-PO-DMT psychedelic intro, reminds me of Boris' album Mabuta no Ura turns into a 70's esque synth driven poppy prog-rock section, very Pink Floyd-esque production is fantastic, everything sounds sharp and clear and blends together nicely, nothing sounds out of place or off sounds like an excerpt from a concept song, a la Echoes Water Dream chiptuney farts playing an RPG-like save tune sounds like the outro track for an album, very calming some of the solo notes sound a bit odd and don't quite blend with the background chords and there's a couple parts where they have this piercing sound that irritates my ears at a higher volume sounds like it should've gone further and built more than it had, but at its current state it could've worked well as the closing track for this album Collision Course i absolutely love it, wonderful post-golden age fusion jazz feel, very Miles Davis-esque, but with an electronic beat and a more industrial feel thick atmosphere, i can really get immersed in the dissonant tunes and incredible drum sound production and mixing is masterful, a lot of very otherwordly sounds accompanying the lovely organ sound the only thing i don't quite like is that the ending isn't long enough, it should've continued for longer to really give proper closure to such a wonderful track Steel and Silver starts off a bit janky, the production in the intro sounds muffled, but after it kicks in properly it sounds much better, though that background synth doing the wobbly stuff still sounds a bit low-quality very dancey song, like something you'd hear at an outdoors concert with lots of people partying and the DJ wobbling awkwardly trying to look like he's doing something not my kinda music, but certainly not bad, enjoyed it Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals " the whole song is just one thick sausage :) " ~ Skeeter, 2014 i feel i should've made the noises a bit more prominent and louder, but all in all im satisfied with this track Black Magic & Voodoo Women wonderful production, a very psychedelic stoner rock jam, getting some Grails vibes not a fan of how the hi-hat sounds, but otherwise everything sounds just right and there's lots of nice subtleties in the mixing that give it a very professional feel i feel the song title is a bit unfitting though, it doesn't have that voodoo feel to it at all, it's more of a middle eastern feel than a voodoo feel i'd hoped that the weird distortions would've come back at the end to really set the finale off and end it with a bang but still great track Party and Praise the mixing sounds very odd, like the instruments that are in the foreground are way too loud compared to the background instruments very often (especially the organ, it's almost impossible to hear anything from under it) songwriting-wise it's very video gamey with its off-the-wall style and streamlined progrock sound, like a castlevania song good song, though i feel it could've been a lot better if it had a more refined production and overall sounded less artifical and computer-generated Final Bossa reminds me a lot of the transitional period from progressive rock to synthpop in the early 80's very chill and calm, though sounds like it's straight from an anime soundtrack, for better or for worse the second half spices the song up a bit and otherwise sounds fantastic, but im not a fan of the new lead synth, atleast not compared to the softer one that comes back at the end the orchestral intro and outro sound absolutely wonderful, they have a great sound to them
Ok here I go: 4-PO-DMT I love the guitar modulation, gives it a really cool and unique vibe. Gets dreamy when the high synth kicks in, tho it could use a bit more highs I think. The melody compliments the backing guitars ridiculously good. 2 minutes is a nice length for this. Well made track overall. Water Dream I think this could be longer actually, a part with some minimalistic/glitchy chip drums would have complimented the calm part nicely. Sounds like something that I could imagine looping in the background of an old rpg game, maybe even cave story. Thats probably what you went for. I like this very much, thats why I'm a bit sad about the length. Collision Course Maybe my finest work haha. Steel And Silver The intro promises you a pumpin' track and delivers too! I can't actually think of much to say, it's a solid, consistent and well produced dance track with a bit of an old school vibe thanks to the bass. Loops a lot, but I kinda didn't expect it to change up at all actually, too busy bouncing to it. Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Facist Ideals Heavy and angry, just like how I like my metal. The pacing is neat and the track keeps things interesting with a lot of cool riffs and instruments like the organ that brings epicness and a drone esque dirty, distorted thing which meshes into the track beautifully. In the end the whole thing just explodes! I really, really like this one. Black Magic & Voodoo Women I think I've already told skeeter how much I like this track :). It's more like an adventure than a track actually. Really well thought out and implemented structure, nice soloes, bongos, organs and soundscapes. This is definitely my favourite out of the bunch, I'd buy an album full of this stuff in a heartbeat. Party And Praise The mixing is a bit odd, I think you should have given the drums more attention in such a fast paced track (especially the kick drum) and toned down the organ. A little bit sloppy production aside, this track is mental! Very video game esque, could fit a modern fast paced metroidvania styled game. I like the solo in the middle. Final Bossa A nice time to take a breather and calm down. Very smooth and relaxing sounds, super cool composition and pacing. Not afraid to take some weird notes at times. Probably the most professional sounding out of the bunch. I love it! Really great work everyone :). Like said, musicians gig room has a lot of talent in there and even a couple signed artists. I think it's only a matter of time till some hit big! [editline]26th June 2014[/editline] also everyone dont get scared by these walls of reviews, it's a thing we do with the albums, feel free to drop in and just simply say if you like the album (or dislike, you are entitled to your own opinion)!
Alright so lets do this: 1: 4-PO-DMT This albums first track, and good golly is it good! The melancholic guitar just is amazing, it got a really, really nice grunge vibe to it that sounds exactly like the first track of an album, and it does! Then it kicks into this dreamy, 80s sounding intro for something! Very wellproduced and it sounds really good, I randomized the tracks to see which one would be first and this track got nr 1, if I had a chance to redo it and deciding which track should go first I would've picked this one. Great track through and through, I can't think of anything other to say about it. Please make more like this, because it is amazing! 2: Water Dreams Second track is a cute little 8bitsounding track and it also has a very introesque feel to it, I think it might do with how calm it is, constantly building up with a really nice melodic solo on top of some really nice chords. I could envision this in an old jrpg, perhaps a town? Once again, I can't really think of anything that could be changed about this track, it being just 1 minute 18 seconds is probably one of its biggest strengths, something that is very rare, and also good since it invites the listener to press play once again to catch a glimpse of a whole new world. Excellent work, I would love to see an album that could be centered around the minimalistic approach of this song. 3: Collision Course This track got a really slick, industrialistic sound to it (and some of the finest drum samples I've heard!) that just drives you crazy, the rhythm and overall feel really feels like some twisted, corrupted city in the future, I instantly think of Blade Runner (the game) when I hear it. I really, really like the guitar break you've put in here as well! This song is also very, very well-produced and if you have the chance, try and get it out there! I can only think of how much this one sounds like it belongs in something bigger, like a huge budget movie or game. 4: Steel And Silver These albums have always had a lot of EDM music, this time around there's not a lot though, which is refreshing and makes the EDM tracks stand out in a positive way once they come back. I really, really like the way you build up this track in a very Kavinsky-esque way, and once the kick comes in? Wow. I'm left speechless, and it really leaves me wondering if Kavinsky accidently submitted this song here. The various melodies blend together in such a perfect way that it sounds new and fresh every time it rolls back, the chord progression that is introduced with the drums gives you shades of a very optimistic future (I can only think of good ol' sci-fi) with the rest of the tracks melodic instruments and percussion has that modern slick feel to it. Honestly, I'm so baffled that there are so many great artists on this forum and that you're not hearing more of it in the commercial world. I've listened to this album a few times now and I think this one is my favourite. Terrific work! 5: Saika Totsuka's Laws Of Casuality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals There's only one band I can think of when this track starts, and that is Sleep. I'm actually a bit saddened that there's no growling vocals entering the fray when the guitar stops playing near the half-minute mark, it doesn't really matter though since this is by and by an electronic track, and it stands well on its own. Vocals on the Guitar Pro guitars would probably sound odd and throw you of your track. Nonetheless, Hakita is one of the best composers on this forum and I really really think you should get a band to start playing what you write to really push your songs into the upper hemisphere of the musical world, because that's the only thing wrong about this track, and that is the organic quality you get from live musicians. This is some really heavy shit. A really impressive thing is also that this track was made in just one day too! Actually, there's one thing that could be improved : If this track took a step back and worked some more on dynamics, and not being compressed to hell and back. 6: Black Magic & Vodoo Women This track is mine, and one I'm very proud of as well! I made this track in the span of two days, and I combined plenty of influences from plenty of bands, some intentional, some not. This is also one of my tracks where I've worked a lot on percussion to really make it deep and something you can find new things on every listen! There are 4 guitars playing, (two which follow the main melody, and two guitars that play the D chord, alternating between minor and major). I've also got a bass guitar, and one solo guitar. I've also laid down four organ tracks, four which play the main melody in some variations and also two that play another different melody. I also played bongo drums and yembe on this track, plus tambourine and a shaker. Oh, and acoustic drums too. Something I really tried to work on in this particular song is dynamics, since the track is almost 12 minutes long! Oh, and I've really no idea what genre this is, I've talked to lots of people about what they consider this song to be and it varies from psychadelic rock to stoner rock, to blues and kraut. Not that I'll complain though, I love all those genres so I'm just happy my love for that kind of music shines through on this track :) 7: Party And Praise The dramatic sound of this, I just, wow. It sounds so damn huge, and once the retrostyle organ comes in, with those saxophones? It really just kicks into a wholly different level, a level few can hope to achieve! It has a particular, Andrew W.K Charm to it, if he decided to start combining jazzy influences to his sound. It's insanely hard to put a tag on this because it really is out of this world, in such a way that it really snatches your breath and begs you to follow. And you do, because you just get so into it that you just start bopping your head, trying to anticipate what's coming next. 8: Brutalism You know how some tracks just nail it with the name of the song? This track, by god does it sound brutal! This is the soundtrack a terminator surely has in his brain when he scours the radioactive wastes looking for humans to kill. I'm very divided by the track itself, I don't like the way it sounds, which doesn't mean it isn't a good track, because it is. It is very well produced with a very clean approach to the way it sounds, I just can't find something that grabs a hold of me though. It might just be me being hungry though, if you're a fan of industrial music I know you're going to love it though! 9: Final Bossa And here's the end, the finalé. And boy, does it end on a ridiciously high note! From the orchestral beginnings that reminds me of Mantovani, to the bossa nova that makes me think of Theme Hospital, and then just out of the blue it becomes almost salsaesque! It really works so well, and is one of the better produced track on the album as well. This is the kind of music you want to dance to, it really is so groovy! I wish I had more to write on each track, especially this one but I just can't find words for it since it is so good! Some of the tracks tell of such great artistic talent that it leaves you dumbstruck that those artists aren't out there making money out of this, because it really is that good. Bloody well done everyone, this is the kind of music I want to hear more of and it is an incredible honour to be able to hear this stuff almost every day, and to be able to be included on an album with such awesome talent.
Congrats on the release guys. I'm in Amsterdam now and the hostel internet is shitty as hell. I will make a proper listen through it and write the reviews when I get back home on sunday.
5: Saika Totsuka's Laws Of Casuality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals
lacking dynamics i can agree with, compression i'm going to have to pin on me not knowing anything about production, combined with the -3db rule i've been trying to set up my instruments to be able to record them on my computer so i don't have to rely on guitar pro, but i still have a long way to go before i can actually play my songs
4-PO-DMT - This song started off a bit slow in my opinion. The beginning guitar chords became quite repetitive. However, after lead synth came in, I fell in love with the piece. The melody sounded so nice and upbeat and uplifting that I instantly fell in love with it. The ending could not have been more perfect as well. This piece is blended nicely together. My only complaint would be the overall sound quality of the instruments used. Otherwise, fantastic job. Water Dream - I really dig this. It sounds like it can fit in an old RPG on a nintendo system or something really old. I'd love to see an 'hd remastered' version of this piece with modern instruments. The timing, in my opinion, is perfect. It could easily fit as an introduction or postlude to an old rpg. Nice work, nice composition. Collision Course - The overall use of sounds and the composition work in this one is fantastic. The craftsmanship that went into this is really worth it. I feel like this would work well as an ambient track in a movie or game. The sound and production quality is spot on as well. Great job. Steel and Silver - This one so far is my favorite. It's upbeating, fun, and energetic. It's nice to have this faster paced piece come in to help ease away from the slower stuff. It does suffer from repetition though and after rocking out for about 2 minutes it started to get too repetetive. I love the work that went into this though, and it sounds great. I can't wait to hear more! Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals - Woah what an unexpected change of pace. The composition throughout is amazing and the guitar is deep and dark. I just love this and I'm typically not a fan of death metal type stuff. This is really rocking though. The bass is spot on. I find it a tad too long as it is repetetive at times. The drums sound really nice as well. Nice work on this. Black Magic & Vodoo Women - A sick bass line that starts a piece is usually a good sign. And, in fact, it was a good piece like the bass line anticipated. I was a bit put off by the length since it is a very repetetive piece. The solo guitar solos were very good as well. This piece has a kill bill feel imo and thats a good thing. A lot of the problems could have been fixed had it not been so repetetive. This is a very well written composition though, and I enjoyed listening to it greatly. Party and Praise - This was my piece. I appreciate the critique on it. Final Bossa - My only complaint with this would be the trumpet sounds. Sounds very fake and nasty. This is coming from a trumpet player! I think it would have been better had you recorded an actual trumpet player. The sound quality aside, the piece was very enjoyable to listen to. The solo's despite the poor sounds were very well written. Very relaxing end to a fantastic album! [editline]26th June 2014[/editline] We should do another one of these soon. Maybe a back to school album in august :)
Here's my feedback for all the songs! Steel and Silver: This was my song.
Was just about to ask who did this, mighty good song.
Having a quick listen to as much as I can before I head out, really fun album so far, great stuff guys. Diverse and overall pretty relaxing. Only thing I haven't enjoyed is Saika (sorry mate)
Awesome work! Can I submit my work here? Would love to get involved!
Awesome work! Can I submit my work here? Would love to get involved!
The album has already been released, you're more than welcome to head over to musicians gig room and start posting your work there though! We're looking into making a similar album in august, as a back2school album and we'd be honoured to have you with us then! Nice song you posted by the way, I like your vocals! Also! Greetings sport fans, we've got a new track that I forgot to add yesterday ; Brutalism, by Holy Helix.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback everyone gave! Sorry that my feedback was kinda short im comparison, but it's only short because I had only good things to say, had nothing to complain about from your songs guys!
Just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback everyone gave! 4-PO-DMT Loving the Pink Floyd-esque vibes. Really nice build-up and release, loving the melody synth. I really only wish this piece was longer. Good track to start the album with. Water Dreams Nice composition and use of chip synths. It would be nice if there were ore dynamics, but I understand that it's supposed to have the old video game aesthetic, where technical limitations didn't allow for this. Collision Course Always nice with some experimental stuff. Good use of dissonaces and time changes. I think the ending of the piece lacks purpose, but I can't really think of any ways to add to that. Steel and Sliver The riffs in this track makes this stand out from typical EDM, nice to see some variety in that field. Does get repetitive, but that's pretty much expected. Could maybe use a little more substance for the rhythm section, and I'm not quite liking the compression. Otherwise a nice and very dancable track. Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals This is one of my favorites from this album, and I don't even like Metal. Built up one one riff that is very catchy, but does kinda drag on. Still loving the middle and end sections though. Black Magic and Voodoo Women Excellent vibes, good for a chill setting. Loving the melodies you made with the bass. Very jammy, but the soundscapes and choice of instruments still makes for an interesting listen. There are also some really fucking boss moments in it to mix it up. Nice ending as well. Party and Praise Somehow I can identify with this piece, because I've made music like this in the past. The starting riff is good. The organ solo could have been written a little bit better, learning to write or even improvise a good-sounding solo takes time, but is definitely worth it. The organ is also too loud compared to the other instruments. The part that comes after that is well written, though, and the guitar solo is very good. Brutalism Some nice, dark 2-step to compliment the other "dark" tracks of this album. Excellent writing and production. No complaints with this one. Final Bossa I like how this track finishes off the album. That wasn't actually intended, the name is supposed to refer to the feeling of accomplishment, but I guess that works out too for an album finisher.
Water Dreams Nice composition and use of chip synths. It would be nice if there were ore dynamics, but I understand that it's supposed to have the old video game aesthetic, where technical limitations didn't allow for this.
Thanks for the review dude, I just wanted to say that I don't use chipsynths at all, it's actually a 5 (or 6) channel module file. It's all sample based, and the file itself is just over 5.5kb in size
since it wasn't added when i wrote my other reviews, i'll review it now: Brutalism very good, dense atmosphere the name is definitely fitting, the song really reminds me of a sort of industrial dystopian brutalist style the production is absolutely wonderful and the songwriting incredible as well kind of feels like a continuation to Collision Course from earlier on in the album and is similarily incredible one of my favorites on this album definitely seems there's a couple reviews from contributors missing still
I really enjoy the music on this album, but I was a little disappointed to find that the genre field is blank when I added them to iTunes and I haven't a clue what to make them.
I'm not going to comment on the production of each track coz I'm listening through shitty headphones, and bandcamp has awful compression. 4-PO-DMT The beginning sounded like some kind of melancholic kraut rock thing, but then BAM! It tuns into Pink Floyd! I wonder what the title means. Water Dream I'm kinda digging the melodic synth you made. Its' so simple! I think it compliments the previous track pretty well. Collision Course This is electronic jazz. I like electronic music. I like Jazz music. I would like to hear more music like this! Steel and Silver This is like 1980s throwback music. I'm diggin' the synthy guitar instrument. Please rewind. Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals This - to me - is a really funky track. Your transitions between the loud and quiet bits are neat! Your title is provocatively long. Black Magic & Voodoo Women I feel like I've heard this song before. Your guitar tones are excellent. It's a good followup to the previous track. Party and Praise You seemed to be in sync with the psychedelic/progressive thing going on with this album. Brutalism Yer lucky Skeeter is a nice guy-! Final Bossa That's all folks! This tracks reminds me of something I would hear on The Wave. I'm surprised with how progressive(?) this album is! Had I known that we would have gone in this direction, I would have proposed some totally different cover designs. You guys are awesome, and I look forward to the next one!
I really enjoy the music on this album, but I was a little disappointed to find that the genre field is blank when I added them to iTunes and I haven't a clue what to make them.
4-PO-DMT is some form of Rock, can't pin the subgenre Water Dream is Chiptune Collision Course is Jazz Fusion, i think Steel and Silver i don't know because i almost never listen to electronic music Saika Totsuka's is Doom Metal or Groove Metal Black Magic is Stoner Rock Party and Praise is Progressive Rock, atleast has the feel of progrock Brutalism i don't know, maybe industrial? Final Bossa is Bossa Nova, as the title implies, i'm pretty certain

For the other albums I decided rather than bug you or anyone else about the genre I just plastered them all electronic since it seems most people have mentioned the other albums contained a lot of EDM. Out of sheer curiosity, was it intentional for these collaborative albums to skip number 8? Or was that accidental as I found none on bandcamp. It literally goes in order and skips 8.
