Part 8 was done on some other bandcamp, not entirely sure why.
4-PO-DMT Black Magic & Voodoo Women wonderful production, a very psychedelic stoner rock jam, getting some Grails vibes not a fan of how the hi-hat sounds, but otherwise everything sounds just right and there's lots of nice subtleties in the mixing that give it a very professional feel i feel the song title is a bit unfitting though, it doesn't have that voodoo feel to it at all, it's more of a middle eastern feel than a voodoo feel i'd hoped that the weird distortions would've come back at the end to really set the finale off and end it with a bang but still great track
The hihats I can sort of agree with ya on this track, I think a lot of the sound comes from that I recorded the drums with only three microphones, I thought I had set up enough mics for the whole kit (had two overheads, one for snare, one for kick, three mics for the toms, and one mic behind the drums on my left side), when I had recorded the whole song (which is done in just one take, without me having a real idea of how it should sound in fact!) I noticed that one of the overheads had distortion in it for some reason, and in the end only the kick drum, one of the overheads and the mic behind the drums were available. This forced me to do something to get the snare out in the mix, which meant I did a send to a gate on the overhead&behind drums, cut everything above 3,5khz and everything below 800hz (which was the 'body' part of the snare on this particular one), then boosted the shit out of 800hz, 1600hz and 3200hz so that you'd get the snare out. This meant I could get the snare out, but it meant I also had to mix the overhead & behind drums so that I could get the toms out as well, which meant cutting back on the snare frequencies, and boosting the lower and higher end of them. I named the track Black Magic Woman at first because of the feel I got from the song (Santanaesque vibes), but there's already a really good track called that so I just went with Black Magic & Vodoo Women, I agree though that there's more of a middleeastern feel to it since all the melodic instruments play minor scale while the song begins major, then minor, then major (and switch between that the whole song, with the guitar playing the chords).
Black Magic & Voodoo Women I think I've already told skeeter how much I like this track :). It's more like an adventure than a track actually. Really well thought out and implemented structure, nice soloes, bongos, organs and soundscapes. This is definitely my favourite out of the bunch, I'd buy an album full of this stuff in a heartbeat.
"It's more like an adventure than a track actually" makes me smile so wide I fear I might look like the joker, thanks a billion! :D I also think it's funny you mention it being well thought out and all that, since the track itself is a bit rushed with me not thinking overly much about how it should be, since it was made in just two days (and during that time I had a lot of other things to do as well, so I just cobbled together the bass, recorded everything else and then went with some sort of idea on how I think a track should be). Really flattered you feel it is your favourite, it's comments like that that can really light up your day when everything seems dark. :)
Black Magic & Vodoo Women - A sick bass line that starts a piece is usually a good sign. And, in fact, it was a good piece like the bass line anticipated. I was a bit put off by the length since it is a very repetetive piece. The solo guitar solos were very good as well. This piece has a kill bill feel imo and thats a good thing. A lot of the problems could have been fixed had it not been so repetetive. This is a very well written composition though, and I enjoyed listening to it greatly.
Ya I actually started to secondguess if this was a good track to put on the album purely on the length and had some thoughts of even making a 'radio edit' with the various parts condensated to make it more accesable to the listener, it makes me really glad to see that you comment on the solos because I rarely play solos since I'm not a technically good player (and creating good melodies is one of my weaknesses). :) A kill bill feel eh? Could you elaborate? :)
Black Magic and Voodoo Women Excellent vibes, good for a chill setting. Loving the melodies you made with the bass. Very jammy, but the soundscapes and choice of instruments still makes for an interesting listen. There are also some really fucking boss moments in it to mix it up. Nice ending as well.
Thanks man! If it isn't too much, could you point to those boss moments? :)
Black Magic & Voodoo Women I feel like I've heard this song before. Your guitar tones are excellent. It's a good followup to the previous track.
The simple melody is very similar to Stand By Me by Ben E. King, it's also part of a minor scale so I wouldn't be surprised one bit if there aren't a couple of tracks with the exact same melody :) Glad you liked the guitar tones, I would've loved to say I made them myself but they're all Guitar Rig 5 presets :)
dunno why it isn't up there anymore, but i have part 8 on my computer and i can upload it for you if you want it
I'd appreciate that thanks :)
I'd appreciate that thanks :)
try this
4-PO-DMT Thanks for the reviews of my entry guys. I'll let you in on a little secret: that "synth" solo is actually a guitar solo. The guitar's tone was inspired by one of the sounds that Tame Impala likes to use on some of their songs. Water Dreams A lovely little chip tune. Makes it even more impressive given how absolalone111 revealed how it was made. The only problem with it is that is too short. Collision Course The Fender Rhodes sound is probably my favorite keyboard sound and I love hearing it being used in such an experimental track. It almost seems something you'd find on a futuristic update of Bitches Brew. Steel and Sliver The build up at the beginning is great, but maybe a little too drawn out. However, once it gets goin, it gets goin. Very upbeat and lively. Won't be embarrassed to admit that it had me moving in my seat :) Saika Totsuka's Laws of Causality and Deconstruction of Fascist Ideals The main riff is well written, but that's no surprise coming from Hakita. It just punches you in the face right from the get go and is unrelenting in its fat, heavy fury. Even if the MIDI sound isn't your thing, Hakita's skill in composition makes it well worth it to listen to the tracks he creates. Black Magic and Voodoo WomenThe underlying riff for the song is a bit repetitive, but there is enough variation to keep you engaged, to the point where it does become a bit of a journey as previously described. It almost seems like an extended jam-outro that a band would play for a live version of one of their songs. All in all, it's a good track and shows how far Skeeter has come as a musician. Party and Praise I love the sense of urgency and tension with this song. The organ and synth guitar solos were great. Overall well written and great sounding track. Brutalism Very in line with one of the previous tracks, Collision Course, in its feel. It's got a dark, dirty industrial sound to it. Well mixed and written. Final Bossa A nice relaxing piece, and a great track to end the album on. It has that summer-y feel to it, but I guess that's the nature of Bossa nova. The synthiness of some of the instruments might be a little off putting, but the composition is excellent nonetheless.
Happy to see so many people liking the album :) Here are my thoughts about the new track Brutalism: Very post apocalyptic feel, sounds a bit like something out of an action movie when the high synth kicks in. Interesting composition, doesn't give you much of a break which makes the track feel alarming (should be a better word but can't think of one), thats fine coz it's probably what you went for. I think you could have done more with the hihats and high frequencies in general, like some crash symbals and stuff [editline]3rd July 2014[/editline] You can also call my track just.. experimental, calling it jazz is just flattering..
experimental isn't a genre though, that's like saying "my song isn't rock, its fast!" it's without a doubt got that jazz feel to it
