A prim (any prim, even a cube) is 1024 triangles, i think with meshes there will be a lot less lag (a road section would only be 2 triangles, as a post to 1024)
I don't know much about SL's primitive system having never played it but from what I can hear, mesh based stuff should reduce the lag a tenfold.

I'm the co-owner of this sim. And can vouch for Chaos's work. It is an amazing sim and we have been privileged to have him as our builder. Many people have enjoyed his work and often compliment it as being the most realistic environment ever created in SL.
