i have been planning for a few weeks to go out to some power lines/steel tower things a few hundred feet behind my house in a massive field with a dirt path once it gets warm out (it still snows sometimes here) when the trees are all that brilliant bright green at the beginning of spring and the field is more yellow and less dead grey grass and i think it will be a cool place

a huge majority of the shots i took, I wasn't very happy with but there's are the only ones I felt were good enough. Shooting people is so much harder than still life or your friends, everyone moves so fast, can't react fast enough to compose a shot without missing a moment. Learning more I guess.

Well there's one way to get them... although "I don't know anything about it".
As well, I currently have every single one of the VSCO presets plugged into lightroom, and while they can be useful sometimes, I found most of them to be no better than an instagram filter. Some of them even decreased the image quality terribly.
I found an alternative way to get these effects that works much better and actually looks a lot better and more accurate is to post process your image in light room. You should bring down the shadows and highlights just slightly, or desaturate it a bit if you want, whatever works best for your photo, but otherwise leave it relatively normal.
Then bring it into photoshop and add a transparent layer above your image and then fill it in with a pale, soft pastel colour. The colour you use depends on the film look you're looking to achieve. Bring the opacity down a lot, usually anywhere from the 5-15% range most of the time. Then what you can do is create new layers on top of that and use the gradient tool. Again, select a soft, pale pastel colour that matches the desired colour scheme/film look you are trying to get, and set it on the left side, then make sure the right side is set to white with opacity at 100% so it's transparent on the right end.
Then drag and apply your gradient from the side, wherever you want. Mess with the colour, stretch, and whatever until you like it. You can add as many gradients as you'd like although I usually only use 1 or 2 on top of the fill layer from opposite sides. More than that will usually be overkill. Now with your gradients, adjust the opacity of them as well so they aren't as strong and blend in more naturally. Also continue to mess with the fill layer's opacity now that you have the gradient layers on top of it.
Next you may notice your image looks way too pale or light, which is often the case. No problem. Duplicate the image into a new layer and place the layer above the original image, but below the fill and gradient layers. Then set the blending mode of your duplicate to overlay. Then lower the duplicate's opacity until it looks right.

VSCO just looks way too... artificial.
Don't steal VSCO, they pour a lot of time into those presets and use a lot of real color theory. They are quite far from Instagram filters.
I wish I could have bought just a few VSCO filters and not the whole pack. I only really use portra 400 vc
